11  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Cute tote for my friend's birthday! on: June 26, 2005 06:08:21 PM
So my friends all decided that I would make them purses for their birthdays. Since I really enjoy sewing, this wasn't a problem. Smiley  The only problem I had with this "purse" is that I thought it would be a lot smaller...the picture on the front of the pattern is misleading! And yes, I know I should have read the dimensions on the back of the pattern. Oh well. My friend loved her tote!

I added this pocket in - it wasn't part of the original pattern.

Okay so the "hand made" part is a stretch - but these tags were so cute I had to buy them!

And one last pic so you can try to get an idea of how big it is. It's big enough for a 3-ring binder and some other stuff too.
12  FIBER ARTS / Weaving: Discussion and Questions / hexagon lap loom on: June 18, 2005 04:50:29 AM
I bought one of these at a yarn sale for $1 but the lady who did them had passed away. Does anyone know how to use them? I've looked around online but can't find any instructions. A scanned copy would be awesome!

13  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / DIY shams to match a new bedspread :) *img heavy* on: June 05, 2005 03:53:42 PM
I found a bedspread/quilt marked down on urbanoutfitters.com ($30  Shocked instead of $100!!! ) and had to get it. Here's a closeup:

Then I bought a bedskirt at Bed Bath & Beyond to coordinate:

But then I needed shams to go with the new bed. I decided patchwork would look good.
Here's the sham in progress:

A closeup of the finished sham:

Here's how it looks on the bed:

And finally, a pic of the whole bed:

Now the only thing I need is an accent pillow or two, but I'm going to have to get more fabric later this week. Any ideas on what type of accent pillow I should make? Thanks for looking!
14  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / need help with a stitch! on: May 20, 2005 02:05:22 PM
Hey everyone,

Hopefully someone knows how to do this stitch.  Huh

I'm trying to make a doily from an old Workbasket magazine, and it tells me to make a 4-joined-tr.  Does anyone know how to do this? Any websites that show you how to do it? I searched on craftster and on google but I'm not having any luck.  Any help would be great!  Smiley

Okay I've only made 3 purses so far but this is by far my favorite. What do you think?

16  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / How to price your items **not for a business** on: April 30, 2005 05:44:44 AM
Hey everyone -
I'm not running a business or website, but I occasionally knit or sew things for people. I like doing it but...
Is there a general rule on how to price items that you make for people? Do you charge by the hour? Is so, what price? What is the person furnishes all the materials?
I don't want to overcharge people but at the same time I want to make it worth my while. Some of my friends balked when I finally started charging for hemming their pants but I was only charging $5! That's cheaper than most dry cleaners around here. And the thing is, I didn't really care when they balked because it doesn't matter to me whether or not their pants get hemmed, ya know?
People don't seem to realize that when they ask me to do these things, it takes time away from other projects I want/need to do - like hem 2 pairs of my own pants, fix the seams on a couple of shirts, sew 2 purses I have bought fabric for, finishing knitting a pair of socks, finish knitting my brother's afghan that I started FOREVER ago...
Well sorry for rambling, but sometimes it gets annoying when non-crafty people don't appreciate your time and effort. Any magic formulas for determining the price?
Thanks a lot.
17  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / problem with DPN's on: April 11, 2005 10:32:39 AM
Hey everybody. Sorry if this has been posted in the past but I couldn't find it if it was. Anyways the problem is...

I'm trying to learn how to use DPN's for the first time. I GET how to use them but by the time I get to the 2nd or 3rd round my stitches are so insanely tight on the needle that I can't knit anymore (for fear that I will BREAK the needles!) It's crazy.

What am I doing wrong?

20  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Crochet hook case (adapted from the great Debbie Stoller) on: April 04, 2005 11:00:57 PM
I hope I'm putting this post in the right spot. I have just begun to crochet now so I decided I needed a "roll-your-own-HOOK" case. Hope you like it.  Smiley
