41  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Brown Micro Suede look-a-like zip top purse on: January 20, 2010 09:12:29 PM
I had so much fun making this purse!  Let me start with it's been forever and a day since I've sewn anything and my first attempt after taking a vacation of a couple years went wobbly.  This project however went very well.  I searched for ideas on what kind of purse to make but just couldn't find anything that sparked my interest.  So onto paper I went to sketch out an idea, draw a pattern and just do it.  The fabric I used I got years ago from Walmart I think.  It's a soft cotton but looks like micro suede with criss cross stitches on it.  I stitched over those to hold some thick felt to give it sturdiness.  Then the lining I think I got from the Goodwill.  There is two pockets inside and I used my new labels I bought from someone on Etsy.  The handles have roping inside that I got from a friend of mine at work, she was going to use it for necklaces but they ended up looking to gawdy and I acquired them.  They work very well with handles like this.  I just cut fabric to length, folded it over a couple times and placed the roping in the middle.  I then sewed up the edge...then sewed it onto the outer fabric.  Now I shopped around numerous tutorials for a zip top on a purse and couldn't find one that wasn't too long to figured out, didn't require me to disassemble the zipper or just didn't make sense.  So I tried my own ideas on a few small pouches...all of which didn't work.  Then I dreamed of a way (crazy, I know), and just did it tonight.  Luckily it worked!!

Height - 9 inches
Width - 15 inches
Length - 15 inches
Depth - 3 1/2 inches

Excellent job on recreating the Vera look!  It looks better than store bought.  And it's my favorite color to boot.  I'm sure your friend really liked it.  Smiley

I love the material you used and you did a supurb job!  Which tutorial did you use if you don't mind me asking.  I hope you plan on using it asap, looks like it's ready to be showed off!  Smiley

You know I never thought of making a mini one.  A few years back I made a surplus of 12 of the larger totes like this one and printed out Cars coloring pages to make goodie bags for the sons pre-school class for his birthday.  This would have been so much quicker, easier and so much more practical.  Thanks for posting the idea and the tute.  Awesome...will have to make a couple of these ones.  Smiley

I love the style and it's hard to believe you made that from scratch.  Zippers are not my friend when making something from scratch so I think you did a fabulous job.  The print is so pretty, I just love black and white together like that...and it goes with EVERYTHING!  Any chance of a tute?  If not, that's okay...I love just looking at your bag.  Great job!

That turned out really cute.  It totally reminds me of the first purse I made in my sewing class in high school.  It was a duffle just like that one.  Ahhhh, brings back fond memories.  Smiley  You did a great job!!

Very pretty...fave is the 1st one.  I love the shape!  The leather and fabric combo is very nice.  How big is it?  And those key chain wallets, a must have...great idea!!

Very nicely sewn and beautiful choice of fabrics.  I love those silky type fabrics but am afraid I'll just end up messing up either with the machine or while cutting it out.  The color combination rocks!

I'm going to have to try and make one of these.  I'm running out of room in my wallet for all the cards I keep getting (no credit cards, just ID's, check cards & insurance cards...oh and all those grocery discount cards).  You did a great job with the suede...you made it look so easy to sew with.  Beautiful!
