1  Re: RENT Swap 2008 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by danitza on: January 05, 2009 11:54:00 PM
Sorry it's taken me so long to post. I was out of town the first half of last week and then I had a friend from Wisconsin stay over for the rest of the week, so I had to do all the sight-seeing/touristy stuff with her.

I received from Aada last Tues/Wed (not sure which, I was in Vegas at the time) and got this awesome stuff:

I tried to get a better picture of the magnets, but the flash makes it impossible and my camera is pretty horrible at non-flash pictures. Sad But I'll be happy to type them out later. Smiley

Not gonna lie, I have been wearing the Mark Scarf EVERYWHERE (which is pretty ridiculous because I'm home in Southern California until I head up north for school again at the end of the month) and singing, "Mark! Mark! I'm Mark!" (Which, again, is ridiculous because I got sick and lost my voice last week, hahaha.) and explaining to everybody how I really am Mark because I started out going for a Documentary Film degree before switching over to Motion Pictures and Television. (Sadly, nobody cares...and those that do already knew all of that.)

Aada, the package was wonderful; there really isn't any need to send anything else. Smiley

2  inside jokes + GOB (from Arrested Development) in Stenciling: Completed Projects by danitza on: October 19, 2008 08:57:54 PM
So I'm kind of friendly with the members of one of my favorite local bands. One day, the guitarist called me up to ask me to design his website. That was on a Tuesday. On Saturday, I went to see them at a gig and he fired me. (For a good reason! His brother created beenup2.com - he really didn't need my help.) Thus, this was born:

He cracked up when he saw me wearing it. Cheesy And one of the members of another band that played that day told me he wanted one, too. It bled a little bit, it was a rush job and on very thin fabric.

The day he fired me, he kept apologizing and telling me I'm his best friend (jokingly, of course). Thus, this was born:

I didn't think he'd actually wear it (after all, I made it as a joke), but he totally surprised me and did! I showed up one day and there he was on stage in my shirt. So here's the action shot:

And I made this one when I made the BFF one. This is my pride and joy. He and I both totally adore Arrested Development, and he is constantly doing a GOB impression ("What you need to know is...it's magic."), so I made this one:

I gave him this one and the BFF one on the same day, he wore this one the day I gave them to him, he wore the BFF one at a show four days later, just in case anybody was interested. Oh, and the on-stage action shot:

He's lucky he's thinner than me, because I totally wanted to keep it.

Feedback is always appreciated. Thanks for looking!

3  Giant sugar packet? Sure, why not! in Stenciling: Completed Projects by danitza on: August 16, 2008 09:55:06 PM
So, first, a little back story.

One of my recent favorite bands (Bidwell, I've posted craft projects on them before) has this song called "Sugar." At one of the last shows I went to, a couple of girls thought it would be fantastic to take a bunch of those tiny sugar packets and toss them at the stage and into the crowd during the chorus ("If you bring the love, I'll bring the sugar!"). The boys thought this was a marvelous idea (because unlike me, they weren't getting conked on the head with these things) and put out the word that we should always do this. I did not agree, because I don't enjoy putting my corneas at risk, and so decided to come up with an alternative.

Suge Night (as I have named him) is the result of about thirty seconds of thinking, heh, and weeks of procrastination. But here he is in all his sugary glory. I scanned in a box of sugar (that was fun to explain to my mother) to create the stencils for the C&H logo and the little ribbon that was on the box. I semi-stenciled the pink parts at the bottom, too. The "Now With" part is freehand, so you can igonore it; the "Bidwell" is the same font that is on their cd/myspace. It's filled with poly-fill and partly machine sewn, partly hand sewn.

I gave it to the guys on Thursday at Warped Tour. They were shocked as hell and immediately called it their favorite gift ever, and I believe Colby has claimed it as his own. They insisted on getting a picture, so here's an action shot of sorts, with 2/5 of the band:

From L-R, Colby, Suge, and Nate

Thanks for looking. Comments are always appreciated. Smiley

4  Yay for bands nobody has heard of! in Stenciling: Completed Projects by danitza on: July 06, 2008 05:52:26 PM
I was listening to a song called "Faker" by Everybody Else before I saw them at the Troubadour in May, and decided I need a shirt with this line from it:

(It is obviously a work of irony, because I am NOWHERE near close to being a cold heart breaker, hah.)

And my niece (who also loves EBE) decided she wanted a shirt too, so I made her one with the next line in the song:

Through EBE I found a band called Bidwell. I made this shirt to wear to a show they did at the Knitting Factory, and they actually pulled me up onstage with them because they loved it.

But I wasn't quite satisfied with it (it was a rush job, and also ill-fitting)...so I made a new one.

They're all really simple, one-layer projects, but I hadn't stenciled in a while so I was trying to ease back into it.

5  splatter fan in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by danitza on: November 20, 2007 03:40:25 AM
Last year, I discovered that my room gets unbearably hot during the summer because of my west-facing window and for whatever reason, the AC seems to hate traveling to my corner of the house (figures). My mom decided I needed a ceiling fan - I decided that ceiling fans are boring. I grabbed some leftover purple paint from one of my walls (I have four colors on my walls), picked up a brush and attacked.

It's pretty simple, but it's more fun to look at with all the splattering on it.

6  Hanson, Ben Folds, and Snoop - oh my! in Stenciling: Completed Projects by danitza on: November 20, 2007 02:18:31 AM
I've come to realize that I've never really posted my stencil projects here. So, here are a few things I've done over the past two years.

Ben Folds - based on the song "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds. The back was originally supposed to be blank, but I managed to smudge it somehow, so I covered it with Ben.

Another one in black, for me. Unfortunately, I forgot to add the fabric medium to the silver and so the stars washed off. Luckily, I didn't forget when making the yellow one for my friend.

This one is an inside joke between my documentary film teacher and me. He cracked up when I gave it to him.

Another Ben Folds one, this time for my niece. I did screw up part of it. I must remember that stretchy fabric is better done with a sponge, and not a brush. She still wears it.

A friend of mine has a strange fascination with Snoop. She begged me to put him on a tote bag, but I put him on a shirt instead.

Hanson tote bag - I made this bag almost three years ago and never really used it. But I met the guys a couple of weeks ago and had them sign it for me.

Zac Hanson - He actually saw me wearing this shirt and complimented me on it. It looks wonky in this photo because I forgot to take a picture before my boobs had their way with it.

Hanson sweatshirt - in honor of their new album, The Walk. Technically, the only part that was really stenciled was the purple. I made a stencil for the little guy but realized that I was out of spray adhesive so I traced the cutout and filled him in. The lettering was freehanded from a picture of their album logo.

Questions, comments, and concrit are always appreciated. Smiley

7  Geek love: Jimmy Fallon and Henry the Accountant in Stenciling: Completed Projects by danitza on: February 04, 2007 02:00:50 PM
I've been meaning to post these up for a while now, but I never got around to it. I did them in November or so.

Two of my biggest geek loves, Jimmy Fallon and Christopher Gorham (as Henry the Accountant on Ugly Betty).

I have a knack for taking pictures at odd angles, don't I?

8  David Krumholtz help? in Stenciling: Discussion and Questions by danitza on: December 11, 2005 01:56:51 AM
One of my close friends is absolutely in love with David Krumholtz, and I'm trying to make him into a stencil but I'm coming across a few small problems: his nose and mouth get lost. I am using this picture:

and so far I've come up with this:

Can anybody help me with this?

10  Conan O'Brien and RENT shirts in Stenciling: Completed Projects by danitza on: March 20, 2005 11:02:18 PM
I made this Conan O'Brien shirt using a stencil from stencilry. The words were done with either PSP or Word - I can't remember.

I made this RENT shirt after seeing it in New York. The front was made by blowing up a picture of the logo and rolling over it with white fabric paint. The stencil for the back was mading using a font I got from daFONT - I can't remember which one, though.

I know the pictures are a bit on the crappy side. My mom messed with my camera and it was never the same.
