301  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Selling Crafts on Etsy.com / Re: Show me your unappreciated etsy work! on: September 07, 2010 01:32:35 PM
Perhaps I shouldn't complain, because I've only been on Etsy a short time, but this is my underappreciated work:

It's been with me to two craft shows so far and EVERYONE loves it, but no one will buy it Sad

I really love this blanket and would keep it for myself if I had a baby girl, but as of right now it's draped over my headboard waiting to be loved.

Thanks so much for sharing!  I have been wondering how in the heck to get better photos of my work onto my Etsy.  I really appreciate this; it seems so easy to make!
303  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Completed Projects / Re: Baby Monsters! Very basic amigurumi and tutorial to get you started! on: September 05, 2010 09:01:18 PM
These are too cute!  I've already started making one Smiley  If it turns out right I'm going to make a bunch for my 9yo brother for Christmas.  He'd love them!
304  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: 2010 What is everyone planning to make for Christmas? on: September 05, 2010 06:35:35 PM
I have just now started thinking about what to make for my Christmas gifts...oh, vey.

Fiance -- he gets a crocheted afghan, even if it kills me.  He was supposed to get it for his last birthday, then Christmas last year...I'll finish it this time.  I'm also going to make him a brain slug stuffie and maybe find him a geeky cross stitch kit.

Little brother -- he also gets a brain slug stuffie, also crocheted socks/slippers and either lounge pants or a bedding set

Sister 1 -- I have no idea.  She's a dental assistant and likes the beach.  Maybe a bag?

Sister 2 -- She is getting a bag.  I need to find a punky/girly/goth fabric.

Sister 3 -- No clue.  She's five, haven't seen her in years.

Mom -- new, matching curtains for the whole house (her request), and a car organizer

Dad & Stepmom -- No clue.  I don't get along with my SM and as a result don't talk to Dad very often.  They may get baked goods or something.

Special Friend and her hubby -- if I can manage it, a lap quilt for two Smiley

Other two friends -- both get crocheted kitty amigurumi, as they are both wild about cats

Another friend -- she is getting a throw blanket in the most amazing fabric I found at Joann's the other day.  I might also get her lavender soaps and stuff, too.

My goddaughters -- both are getting stuffies and crocheted slippers, and the older one will also get some hair stuff.  Maybe cute bibs for her baby sister.  Or big sister/little sister tees.

FMIL -- I don't know her well at all and I'm still not sure if she likes me.  I'm thinking potholders in pretty colors because I know she cooks.

My boss -- he's great and actually a very good friend, so he gets a gift Smiley.  He just went through a bad breakup and about all he knows how to cook for himself is rice, so I'm going to put together a book of easy recipes and cooking tips I hope he'll like.

My grandmother gets some really cool lighthouse-theme pillowcases I saw on Etsy, and two women at my church I love dearly will get appliqued place mats if I can wrangle it.

I'm also thinking of making sweaters for our four dogs and a catnip toy for the kitty Smiley

305  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Am I ambitious, or just plain crazy? on: September 04, 2010 09:04:44 PM
So...my best friend is getting married October 30.  I am one of her bridesmaids, and I need a dress.  I won't have enough money to buy a ready-to-wear dress until at least October 15th.  Eeeeeeeek, to say the least.

I just got a full sized sewing machine.  I had a Toyota mini before on which I sewed comfort packs and quilt blocks and made minor repairs/alterations.

I got it into my head tonight that I want to make my bridesmaid's dress.  I can picture myself buying a few yards of red fabric, cutting out a simple design, and sewing it together in a week or two.  It doesn't have to be an elaborate dress -- ankle-length, probably an empire waist with spaghetti straps and a zip back.

Here's my question: Having never made a piece of clothing before, am I jumping the gun or am I just being too antsy?
306  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Medieval wedding 9-3-11 and I need HELP! on: September 04, 2010 06:55:43 PM
So...I've got 364 days to plan my wedding.  I am living in a dorm room 8hrs away from the wedding location and my fiance, I have very little time on my hands, a $5,000 budget, and I can crochet/sew.

I need help.

I have a princess complex and my FH is a movie buff, so we decided to base our wedding off one of our favorite movies, The Princess Bride.  This means I have a silhouette princess dress (yay!), we're having the ceremony inside our church (which has stained glass windows), and we want to have a big feast/banquet at our reception.

We don't want the medieval tone to be overly heavy, just general touches here and there.  Our colors are emerald green (dominant) and a turquoise blue.  I'd show you pics of the swatches but I don't have them.

I need help with ideas/details.  I'd like to do as much as possible on my own, or with the help of friends.  I've already commissioned two wonderful women I know who have an Etsy shop to do all of our stationary http://cherishedthoughts.etsy.com.

Any advice, tips, or pics from your own weddings is much appreciated!

Your bouquet is beautiful!  Thanks for posting the link, too.  I'm getting married 9/3/11 and one of my bridesmaids is severely allergic to flowers, so I will definitely have to make this for her to carry Cheesy

I'm glad you like the fabric, MommytheMaid!  Let me know what you make with it Smiley
309  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: What to do with this fabric? (add yours!) on: September 04, 2010 04:56:48 PM
I've got this big bit of granny floral cotton that I'm not sure what to do with.  It's over 5' long, so plenty to make a small clothing item like a skirt or such with, but I'm not wild about the pattern.  I considered cutting it into strips to make a crocheted rug, or making a bunch of potholders or some pillowcases.  Any ideas?

Here's the fabric for reference:

310  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: Getting geared up for the holidays! on: September 04, 2010 11:50:24 AM
They're beautiful!  My nanny used to make stiff doilies with the same method.  We also still have some crocheted angel ornaments that my other grandmother made us.

Your gifts look great.
