I received a gorgeous ATC this week from Mountains and Clouds!  The theme was nature and she did a lovely little watercolor (I think?) titled "Sleeping Barnacles"

When I was studying invertebrate zoology, barnacles were a particular favorite of mine.  When they're young they drift around in the ocean, later they settle into place and cement themselves in - standing on their heads   Shocked  The little feathery wands they use for feeding are actually their legs...I love that bit!!  Roll Eyes

Thank you, Mountains and Clouds  Cheesy

miknessevie received my card recently but her camera isn't working, so here you are...

My claim was for "old Bible story pictures." I had just been rummaging through some children's books on my bookcase and among them I found one that was mine in the 1950s.

The one color picture in the book (miknessevie says it's of David with his sheep)

and the title page -

What an exciting week this has been!!  Cheesy

I received two terrific cards in this week's mail - and had a new roof put on my house.  The cards are definitely more fun, even if they weren't quite so useful in last night's rain.  Tongue

First up, from Mrs.LindsayLoo on my combined themes of vinatge, chickens, and ocean....hmmm?Huh you say?  Wait till you see it!

I just love this chicken of the sea!

And then, all the way from Finland  Shocked I received from Kitiza a 3-D doorways card titled "Doorway to Night"...

which opens to reveal...

Thank you both so much - I love them to bits!!  Cheesy

I arrived home late yesterday evening after a long hot day and what did I find awaiting me but awesome hoopy goodness from spookygrrrly!!

She claimed me for "tiny houses" but she went a big step further to come up with a tiny haunted house...doesn't get much better than that!  Cheesy

If you look closely near the fence on the right side you'll see a little white ghosty.   What I haven't been able to capture on film, though, is that my little ghosty glows in the dark  Shocked  just like the real thing.  And she managed to fit the tiny haunted house into a tiny 4" hoop.  Who knew you could fit so much into such a tiny space?  Thank you so much, spookygrrrly!  Kiss

26  Nessie! in Needlework: Completed Projects by muddy21 on: June 09, 2011 07:16:16 PM
I made this hoop for malkavian6 in the first Ongoing Hoopla Swap.  Her theme was Sea Monsters, but somehow I got onto the topic of Nessie and didnt seem to be able to get away from itI was hoping a Loch Monster would do!

The design was adapted from a page at www.enchantedlearning.com , a website we used a lot when my boys were doing projects in elementary school.

The water is an aqua (color isn't very true in this photo) textured lame-sort of fabric that I found on clearance at Joannes, the white is a curtain lining fabric with a small white-on-white check.  This is the second time Ive used curtain lining for the white background and I really like it!  Its easy to stitch on and its opaque enough that you dont see the backing through it like you sometimes do with lightweight fabric.

When I stitched the top and bottom together I overlapped the edge, rather than doing a traditional seam.  I thought it would help reduce the bulk and make it easier to slide the upper hoop over and I knew the join would be covered by the water surface. It seemed to work well.

Its a little hard to see, I think, but I used a cotton floss for Nessie above water and a thicker silk floss for the part underwater, thinking things always look larger and shinier underwater.  The surface of the loch isnt really stitched.  I used a blue/green variegated Lion Brand Homespun yarn.  It has a fairly loose twist that I thought looked like waves when it was laid on the fabric.  I couched it with two-strand cotton floss. The cliffs and castle in the background are backstitched with a single strand of black floss.

And the back...

Questions and comments always welcome!  Cheesy

Well, I do love the mermaid and jellies, but not nearly as much as I love the hoop I just received in my own mailbox!!  Shocked

babalina58 claimed me for "something forest/garden" and I surely squeeed when I opened the package that arrived today...

and when I looked closer I could see it was made of thousands of silky soft French knots...

They're so soft it's hard to stop petting him - good thing he's so sleepy is all I can say!!  Cheesy

29  Celebrating true love~ in Needlework: Completed Projects by muddy21 on: April 16, 2011 03:54:03 PM
A few months ago (well, six, actually) a woman at work mentioned that she and her boyfriend had gotten married.  Feeling inspired by one of the hoops in the first Hoopla Swap, I went to work.  It seemed particularly appropriate because her favorite type of reading is food-related mysteries.  It took a while but I finally finished!!  She seemed quite pleased with it.  Pattern was found online at http://spotcolors.wordpress.com/2010/06/24/free-embroidery-pattern-of-the-month-and-challenge/

and the back...

Well, yesterday two days ago it was my birthday and I came home from a very looong day at work to find a lovely package from missmoppet on my doorstep.  Timing couldn't have been better and I love my hoops!!  Cheesy

She claimed me for hoopla art and sent not one, but *two* hoops.  Shocked Shocked  The larger hoop (8") has a gnarled crayon-tinted tree with tons of character and the small hoop (3-1/2") has a single green felt leaf...I love trees!!!!   Roll Eyes

and individual pix for more detail...

Thank you, missmoppet!!
