1  Doll from vintage 40's pattern in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by Strawhatbrat on: November 14, 2010 02:36:46 PM
I finished my first doll from a vintage mail order pattern. She was pretty easy to sew, and I do love how she turned out!

2  I made a Nook cover! in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by Strawhatbrat on: August 03, 2010 01:06:57 PM
I wanted to make my own, with pretty fabric. Plus, the covers at Barnes and Noble cost a small fortune. I knew I could make one myself, it took a few tries to get it perfect, but I love how it turned out.

3  Lots of fiber! in Dyeing: Completed Projects by Strawhatbrat on: May 09, 2009 10:07:01 AM
I've been dyeing a lot of fiber. I just got some superwash seawool and it's so so so soft. I think I am going to dye a bit more today. I am spinning some right now and it's just effortless!

I keep improving!! I love improving Smiley
I dyed 8oz of BFL in each colorway with jacquard acid dyes, but only spun 2.5oz so far.....
Here's the roving:

And the finished product: 2.5 oz and 145 yards worsted weight. (I think)

6  When will it be even?!?!?! PICS :) in Spinning: Completed Projects by Strawhatbrat on: March 25, 2008 03:34:11 PM
OK... so I admit it. I am impatient. This is my second plied yarn. Really, my second skein of yarn. I posted my first a couple months ago. (Yes, I take breaks and pick up way too many new hobbies, so I have to share the time)I really love the look of this yarn. I's mostly heavy worsted with accidental bits of chunky throughout. It looks like I spun it that way on purpose. But I didn't. I was actually going for even yarn!!
I also think I overspin. My yarn is just a bit "firmer" than the handspun I didn't spin myself. I tried spinning it less... it pulled apart. More... too firm. Some places are perfect, some aren't. But I love it and I did it myself. I'm just hoping that I can master this soon!!!
It's top dyed by fatcat knits.

7  I did it!!!!!!! in Spinning: Completed Projects by Strawhatbrat on: November 21, 2007 11:54:55 PM
I posted once before about my frustration... my first spinning attempt wasn't as I thought it should be Wink

I decided to let my little 3 year old help me by dyeing roving with wiltons. she picked the colors, helped me paint and squirt and roll the roving into saran wrap. In return for her wonderful favor, I spun it *just for her* and made her a hat!!!

She says it's birdiful!! That makes it so worth the frustrations!! And I absolutely had a blast watching it come out. This is my first time with color, and my first time plying. I'm so hooked. now I wish I had more energy to do more... I am way pregnant and tired and am feeling very lazy lately!

8  Tell me it gets better!!! Pics too. in Spinning: Discussion and Questions by Strawhatbrat on: October 20, 2007 12:13:56 PM
I used my wheel for the first time last night. It was NOT easy. Nope. not at all.
Here was last nights first attempt: I've never even used a drop spindle.

And here is my second try last night.... where I *almost* started to get it. I don't think it's actually useable... but I'm keeping it FOREVER!!
On the bobbin:

On the niddy noddy:

In a hank:

But the truth is.... when it isn't twisted into a neat hank... it looks like this: (but still WAY better than last night, right??)
