1  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Discussion and Questions / Steam setting at home on: January 19, 2011 04:08:47 PM
I've been using Procion MX dyes for years at college.  I'm trying to get a home studio set up since I no longer have access to the school's amazing studio.  I do a lot of dye paintings, similar to silk paintings.  I can't afford spend $1000 on a nice vertical steamer.  I've heard of rolling up your work in and using pots on the stove, but I'm worried about it not working well.  I tend to make fairly large paintings 3ft x 6ft.

Does anyone have experience or advice on what will or won't work?
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Christmas gift of music? on: December 07, 2009 01:35:17 PM
I've been trying to decide what to do gift wise for my family this Christmas.  I just started playing the harp 4 days ago.  Renting it and lessons are a birthday/Christmas gift from my dad.  Very few others in my family know about it yet.  I've got some Christmas music books on the way to start learning songs.  I want to bring the harp to our family gathering and surprise everyone with it and playing music.  I know my mom and grandmother will love it, but I feel that I should do a little more.

I'm trying to think of something that little that I can make to go along with it.  I thought about trying to record the songs and make CDs to give out, but I don't know how well I'd be able to record.  Never tried it before.  My skills are also a bit lacking at the moment.  I'm not sure if I'll want the permanent memory of what I sound like now.

Any ideas of other things I could do to supplement the live music?  I'm working with family members from 29-89.  I wouldn't mind baking things like banana nut bread and cookies, but I did that two years ago.  My biggest craft hobbies include everything with fibers from crocheting to weaving to sewing, but I'm open to just about anything.  Or should I just attempt to do the CD?
3  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Vibrator Case on: February 12, 2008 10:25:14 PM
I've wanted to make one for a while and finally got around to it tonight.  It has a popcorn stitch so it can be fastened on.  I'm thinking about experimenting with making more decorative ones.

4  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Valentine's Day / A scarf to keep him warm on: February 12, 2008 04:55:41 PM
Here's a scarf that I wove and screen printed for a special boy.

Here's it just off the loom.

A close up of the pattern

Just a little screen printing on the edges to personalize it
