1  Champagne of Beers! in Halloween Costumes by merrymaker on: November 08, 2011 09:55:46 PM
It is great to see everyone's awesome costumes this year!

I have been thinking about making this costume for a few years now, this was the year. My guy and I are originally from Wisconsin, so Miller holds a special place in our hearts. We represented this year with the Miller High Life Girl on the Moon, High Life's logo for the past 100+ years.

We didn't get a great picture of the two of us, but you can get the idea.  I'm the girl, he's the moon, so when we stood around together you get the whole sha-bang.
I made my whole costume: jacket, skirt, petticoat, corset thingy, hat embellishments, scarf and spray painted some thrifted boots.  I just made things up as I went along, no patterns.

I also made the moon and attached it to a shirt with some stars. My guy was a good sport.

Here is a close up of the jacket detail (on my duct tape dummy), I sewed the embellishments on by hand.

This costume was so fun, both to make and wear.  It was a hit at the bar, and I am super happy with how it turned out.

Thanks for looking!

2  Another fishy cat bed! (simplicity 9004) in Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects by merrymaker on: January 30, 2011 08:03:28 PM
I finally worked up the courage to try the Simplicity 9004 pattern after considering it for ages.  Pictures first! Then the (long-winded) boring stuff!
Fred the cat, chillin' like a villian, oblivious to the fish sneaking up from the rear.

Oh no!  It has him!

Well, it has most of him...

And two dorky pictures, the fish attacking BB, the pit bull.  And one of me, admittedly doing what I did all day whenever the bf looked at me, probably saying something like, "I've got a fish face...fish face!" Yeah, I'm cool like that.

And the boring (and way too long) stuff... I put off making this for myself for a long time because of reviews I have read about it and worry that my cat would just snub it.  I finally jumped into it for a sad reason.  My friend has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gherig's) and cannot sew anymore.  She had some projects in mind for some family members and herself that she just couldn't get to before she lost the use of her hands.  I offered to help by being her little sewing elf, of sorts, and to try to finish what I can before she leaves us.

Of course she picked this pattern that has been intimidating me for years.  I am so glad that she did though, it gave me the push I needed, plus I made myself finish it just two nights.  She has given me a huge amount of her stash, and I used fabric from that.

I would say that everything you hear about this pattern is true. The directions are vague, the foam is a real "treat" to work with, and some steps take some creative brainpower.  I changed a few things...

I only used one layer of foam on the body (2 on the head, per directions).  I didn't want to sew through so many layers of foam, and I thought it would stand up well enough with 1 layer, and it does.  People were wondering about where to get foam, I've always bought it at joanns, but wait for a 50% off coupon or sale.
I just sewed the fabric lining together, sewed it in by hand (to avoid the exposed seam inside) and tacked in up to the fish back and sides.  I made a removable bottom pad, for easier washing.
I didn't have a ping pong ball, so I just used felt for the eyes.

Fred the cat is about 18 pounds, a pretty big boy, and I think he could have fit if I gave him more time to get comfortable.  As it was I just lured him in with some cat nip.  I think it just depends on how comfortable your cat is with tiny openings and no other exits. I didn't give him too much time with the fish, as it is for my friend's cats and didn't want him stinking it up too much.

Sorry this is so long, if you made it this far!

I love feedback!

3  Ornament time! in Needlework: Completed Projects by merrymaker on: November 16, 2010 10:48:26 PM

Like so many I am working on xmas gifts.  Here  are a few ornaments, or gift ties, or something I have finished.  I believe all 3 patterns are from Badbird's: http://zuill.us/andreablog/
She shares such great patterns!

They are on muslin with little rickrack loops, nothing fancy. I was going to stuff them slightly, but changed my mind.
And some more close-ups!

Thanks for looking!  C&C always welcome!

4  Septopus and friends! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by merrymaker on: November 16, 2010 10:31:53 PM
I'll admit, I didn't set out to make a septopus... he was going to be a full fledged octopus.  I made up all eight of the arms and was working on attaching them when one of our canine monsters gingerly placed a slobbery and quite soiled tentacle by my feet.
I reached to make another arm, but I decided a little battle scar would add some character.  And I was tired.

Septopus is made of fleece with sequin suckers.  I drew inspiration from many other octo stuffies floating around, but ultimately drew up my own pattern.

And a shot with his friends:

Not in the group shot is a little doll I made:

Again she was inspired by something I saw somewhere (sorry I don't have a link).  Her body is pretty boring, just some lace/ribbon detail.  I really wanted to spice it up with some buttons or something, but she is for my first Toy Society toy drop (http://thetoysociety.blogspot.com) and I was worried about her going to a young child.

Thanks for looking!  Comments and criticism always welcome, these are some of my first playthings and I would love to improve!  Have a wonderful day!

5  Krang and Shredder! TMNT villian power! (pic obese) in Halloween Costumes by merrymaker on: November 01, 2010 10:59:47 PM
I am so excited to see everyone's costumes!
This year I decided that we should be the TMNT villians, Shredder and Krang.  It started as a lazy plan to paint Krang (the disembodied brain and owner of the awesome Technodrome) on the guy's stomach.  He wasn't so excited about trying to go out without a shirt, so I turned to my own crafty brain and mostly things I had laying around the house (and a lot of duct tape!).
Well, time for pictures and then some details!

Krang is a fabric and batting creation with a cardboard "house" that is covered in a yellow dog food bag, and a tiny joystick!

total Krang view

Shredder is mostly tagboard, duct tape and a lot of staples.

With a thrifted grey polo and black t-shirt scraps for belt (which was a tiny fannypack for my ID and camera), oh and some awesome sparkly purple for the cape.
We were a hit at the bar, and I was super proud this year.  Thanks for looking!

6  happiness is a warm gun... in Needlework: Completed Projects by merrymaker on: September 11, 2010 04:13:01 PM
I have just recently gotten into embroidery, and I think I am hooked!  Here is my most recent project:

I used split stitch and backstitch for this piece.  It was a lot of fun to do, and worked up really quickly.

Definitely needs a good ironing.  The friend I was visiting liked it so much I let him keep it (and told him how to iron it).

7  Roboknit! in Knitting: Completed Projects by merrymaker on: September 10, 2010 08:15:52 PM
This is my first craftster post after a long bout of lurking, so please excuse any awkwardness.

I made this awesome little feller using dangercraft's pattern (found here: dangercrafts.etsy.com).  Her patterns are so easy and adorable.

I just used some yarn from my stash.  I feel like he could use a little tie, you know, for fancy occasions.
