Goblins and Rainbow Brites, and Harry Potters galore!

Time to showcase all of those amazingly creative DIY Halloween costumes of this season.  Each year, we've had the pleasure of viewing absolutely spectacular handcrafted costumes.  And now we want to see yours!

Once the challenge is completed, we'll move all of the entries to the Halloween board, so they can be easily accessed for years to come, too! Kiss

Here are a few specifics for this challenge:
  • The costume you enter must have some handmade components.
  • It must be a costume you are making for this year (Halloween 2018 ONLY), and not photos of a costume from past years.
  • If you are making a costume for someone else, and not for yourself to wear, it's okay enter it, but just remember that you can only have one entry in this contest.
  • If you are making a set of costumes for multiple people that all go together via an obvious common theme, you can enter them together as one entry.

Rules:

  • Enter costumes crafted for Halloween 2018 only.  Projects created before this timeframe will not be removed from the entry board, but they will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • Each participant can enter ONE project (Although your entry can have multiple components to it).
  • Post your craft during the period of Nov 1 - Nov 8 2018. No sooner.  No later.  On Nov 1, there will be a special folder created for entries.  We will reply with the folder/board link here on this thread.
  • Voting will happen from Nov 13 - Nov 20 2018.
  • The winner will be officially announced on our first business Monday of the next month -- in our December newsletter, on this thread and on the Craftster blog.  We will contact you via Private Message, after the announcement, to get your prize package information.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, we'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner will get...

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog
(3) and this Craftster prize (winner can receive prize in U.S. or non-U.S.):
Their choice of any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

5  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / Cricut Stencil Bridal Shower Gift on: August 20, 2018 10:23:43 AM
Someone on a local Facebook group was looking for someone to make a custom stencil for her [for a bridal shower gift she wanted to give 3 days later! Cheesy].  I had some time one evening last week, so I gave it a whirl for her.

She mentioned wanting their names at the bottom, and I had always wanted to try the knockout method, so it gave me the push I needed to learn it.  I don't necessarily adore the Design Space interface (that's an understatement), so I did that part in Photoshop and just inserted it as an image in DS.

I covered it with transfer tape, so she could easily move it to her board.  She did all of the stenciling herself, but sent me photos from the shower yesterday.  It turned out so well!

7  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Completed Projects / Paint Wall / Art Wall on: July 30, 2018 11:59:43 AM
I suppose this is more of an "ongoing project" rather than completed, but it shall do. Smiley  Our kids are always doodling and painting, so I wanted to give them a space to just create to their hearts' content.  We've had chalkboard walls in the past, but I wanted something a little different.

I wandered around our house looking for THE perfect wall, but nothing was quite clicking. Undecided  I didn't want them to have carpet at their feet with the paint pots & water in use, and I wanted them to be indoors (it gets HOT here in Phoenix summers!), but still have lots of natural light when at all possible.  And then I found it!  We walk by this big old canvas multiple times per day and just never truly saw it. Roll Eyes  It was perfect!  We have a two car garage, but only one car, so it was just space waiting to be loved.

Slapped on two coats of high gloss white paint and it was good to go.  Fortunately, with the aforementioned heat, paint here dries very quickly Cheesy so mr.sweets4ever and I painted after the kids went to sleep one night.  We set out the step stool, paints & water jars and let them discover it the next morning.

They've spent hourrrrs out there.  Painting, singing, dancing.  For now, during the summer, we just close the garage through the afternoon, so mornings & evenings are fresh air and natural light galore.  Once fall, winter & spring are upon us, the door can stay open all day/as they would like.

"The wall" is like a moth to a flame.  If you pass by it, it just calls to you. Cheesy  You feel the NEED to create.

And what a view when we pull into the garage.  That's quite a greeting. Smiley  And it's always changing!

I'm not even sure how the dinosaur got out there recently, but I like it. Cheesy

Have you ever been the recipient of a RAOK (random act of kindness), or perhaps stumbled upon a painted rock along your journeys?  Didn't that one little moment just feel amazing?  Let's spread more of those moments!  This month, we are rockin' it out Cheesy and challenging YOU to paint and hide a rock!  We're going to be spreading creativity and joy all throughout our communities and travels. Kiss

The challenge is simple, really!  Find a rock.  Paint it.  Label it with #CraftsterRocks.  Hide it. Cheesy  If you create a set of [obviously] themed rocks, you may enter the entire set as one entry.  The minimum requirement is just to paint and hide one rock, though! Smiley  Your entry must contain a photo of your painted rock.  If you want, you can include in progress photos or even a photo where you've hidden it, too!

Here are some basic guidelines and best practices for rock painting:

1. Always be mindful of the environment and respectful of the community guidelines that already exist.
2. Seal each rock thoroughly.  Do not add or attach anything other than a securely-adhered label, as trinkets and attachments can pose littering and choking risks for animals.  Many use Mod Podge for attaching the labels to the back, followed by spray sealing the entire rock with at least two coats.
3. Do not hide rocks in national parks, state parks, or on private property.
4. Craftster, Pinterest and Facebook are great places to find inspiration for colorful creations and creative messages.

Printable Labels
We've created some printable sheets of itty bitty labels, if you need one for the bottom of your rock.  You can always just paint or use paint marker on the bottom of your rock instead of attaching a label, too.  Totally up to you!  These PDFs print on standard 8.5x11 printer paper.  Print which size you need, cut out a label and attach it to your rock.  Most people use Mod Podge or craft glue to adhere it prior to sealing the entire rock.

Facebook Group (optional fun!)
Sometimes when people find rocks "out in the wild," they take a photo and share it on Facebook with the rock's hashtag or group.  If you want to join a group for #craftsterrocks, we've just created it here!  Craftster Rocks #craftsterrocks group on Facebook.  Just request to join and myself, kittykill or rackycoo will get you added! Smiley

9  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Teacher Toolbox on: May 30, 2018 06:46:26 PM
We wanted to make some gifts for our teachers for being amazing [read: surviving another school year with smiles on their faces.  bless them.  seriously.].  I didn't want to give them another mug or picture frame of my kid.  I just couldn't do it.  They see his face all year long.  They deserve a break.  Cheesy

We found the idea of a teacher toolkit/toolbox and thought it fit so well for their Montessori classroom.  We got the drawer label inspiration from The Teaching Willow and just ran with it wherever our noggins led us.

We started with a really simple garage organizer from Lowe's.  I coated it with two coats of Valspar Paint + Primer in the color Destiny.

I downloaded these watercolor flowers from Creative Market.  They were free the week we snagged them, but I'm not sure how often they do that.  Each week, that site has some featured, free goodies and we happened to see these when we were searching for toolbox decorations.

I used the "Print Then Cut" feature on Cricut to cut them out because I do not possess the patience to cut all of those little bits out by hand. Cheesy  We brushed the back of each piece with Mod Podge and smoothed them all over the toolbox.  Ezra especially loved this part. Cheesy

After the flowers were all applied, I sprayed it with 3 - 4 coats of Rust-Oleum Chalked Sealer.  Any craft sealer will do, though.  That's just what I had on hand.

We used the same floral clipart to carry onto the drawer labels.  I chose some.  Ezra chose some (glitter, stickers and crayons Cheesy ).  We just had fun filling it with supplies we know they have in their classroom.

Someone mentioned it would also be a great home craft or makeup organizer, and now I want to make one for myself. Grin
