4  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Latest News / 10/20/19 - HUGE News for Craftster! on: October 20, 2019 07:55:15 PM
Hi, all!  We have some big news to share!  Well, actually, TWO big pieces of news!

Over the last week, you may have noticed we've been testing through various parts of the site.  As of this weekend, the changes are officially in-progress!

1)  We are retiring our FOC (Friends of Craftster) and FFOC (Fanatic Friends of Craftster) subscription options.
2)  We are also retiring the on-site Craftster merchandise shop.

Why are we retiring the FOC program and Craftster merch shop?

On January 1, 2020, the CCPA goes into effect.  Craftster needs to be compliant with it prior to that date.

Huh?  What is the CCPA?  Calico Cats Parade Around?

Sadly, no cute calico cats will be hosting a parade. Cry  For a lengthy description, you can read all about it here.  The much shorter version is this.  Simply put, the CCPA will be the toughest data privacy law in the United States.  It's the big Kahuna of privacy laws.  Businesses either need to be in compliance, or pack up their bags and go home.  There is no leniency or grace with this bad boy.

We decided, instead of trying to bring the site as-is up to compliance and maintain the compliance, we would retire the only two areas of the site affected by it.  The two areas of Craftster are those that accept payment options -- the Membership Subscriptions (FOC) and Merchandise (the Craftster Shop).  By doing this, we will also be able to provide more of our members some exciting features.

But why now, if the CCPA doesn't go into affect until January?  Why the urgency?

Unfortunately, to retire these two areas, it's actually quite an undertaking behind the scenes! (insert sleepy emoji here)  These two changes will affect many links, graphics, memberships, newsletters, and more.  We also need time to submit to legal, Google, etc. That being said, it's still much less than would be affected, if we attempted to achieve and maintain ongoing CCPA compliance with these areas in existence.  And in the instance of CCPA, if you are found to not be in compliance at any point in time, it comes with monstrous fines.  That's a risk we just cannot take for our little home here! Smiley

So what does this mean for me as a member?

We are still working out a few longterm details, but I wanted to get a note up to the community ASAP.  I will update as I have more information available.  Reply to this thread, so you get notified of updates, too!

Cha, cha, cha, changes....

Merchandise Shop
  • The shop is officially closed.
  • IT started removing the links and graphics from around the website that linked to it.
  • We will be removing applicable links and graphics in the newsletters soon as well.
  • We will use all of our merchandise stock for prizes, giveaways and even more contests!! Kiss

FOC/FFOC
  • We will be opening some of the FOC features to the entire community in the future!  Woohoo!  We won't begin this phase until all of our current FOC subscriptions have first expired, though! Kiss  It's very important to me that our current FOC receive the full term of their subscriptions before the features are available to anyone else, and IB fully agrees! Smiley
  • The membership page for purchasing FOC subscriptions has been removed.  No new FOC can be purchased from this point forward.
  • The private FOC chat board is still available to current FOC! Smiley  We did not remove it.  We only removed the avenue to get there (the option to buy a new FOC membership).  In the future, we are still going to keep the private off-topic board, too!! Smiley  After all of our current FOC have expired, the private off-topic boards will be available to a member, if they are logged in + have posted a certain number of posts (much like signatures are only available to members who have posted previously).  We don't want the off-topic boards to be viewable to anyone who isn't a member here! Smiley  No lurkers. Cheesy
  • Current FOC can still turn off ads.  Again, we did not remove the feature, just the avenue to get there (the option to buy a new FOC membership).  I haven't received confirmation if this feature will remain available longterm or not.  Fortunately/unfortunately, ads are a source of income for many websites, and Craftster is not immune to it.  I will update when I have more information on this.
  • FOC was previously granted for Swap Angels, so we are working on a new reward system for those awesome volunteers!  If you have any suggestions, please reply with them here.  Maybe one of the pieces from our retired merchandise shop??  Would really love your input on this!
  • Our cute little profile icons and extra profile information will still be available.  We are currently working on these, so please don't panic, if yours are not appearing right now.
  • From your feedback, we are working on some BRAND NEW features that will be available to everyone!  I'm consuming epic amounts of coffee, and hope to have these available soon! Cheesy

As always, we thank you so much for your love and support.  We (literally) could not do Craftster without you.  If you have any questions, please drop them here or PM me directly.  Like I said, we are still working through some details, but will pass them along as we have them!

Craft Challenge #127 - Craftalong Share! - Entries Due Sep 2 - 13

Winner Announced!

Congrats to our winning entry by Abbeeroad!

Check out the full project thread for this awesome project, and the challenge blog as well!

This month, you won't be crafting anything right now.  For this craft challenge, we want to encourage you to share a project that you've never posted on the Completed Project boards previously.

The crafty kicker:  It has to be a project that you've made in a Craftster Craftalong.  Over time, so many amazing projects get buried in the Craftalong threads, but people forget to post them on the project boards.  Let's SHARE THEM!

Your project can be any medium, technique, size or shape you desire, as long as you've discussed and posted it on a Craftster Craftalong thread previously! Smiley  The project must not already have its own Completed Project thread.

When the challenge is complete, we'll tag and move all of the projects to their proper category boards. Smiley

For this unique challenge, the requirements are bit more specific than usual, and we are allowing a longer entry period, so be sure to read them very carefully:
  • Post your project on the entry board from (Sep 2 - Sep 13) only.  Your project must be something you crafted and posted in a Craftster Craftalong.
  • In your entry thread, be sure to share the link to the Craftalong where you originally shared the project.
  • Share at least one photo of your project, but more are always encouraged, of course! Smiley

Additional Rules and Details:

  • On September 2, 2019, there will be a special board created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of September 2 - 13, 11:59:59 PDT 2019.  No sooner.  No later.
  • Voting will happen from September 17 - 24.
  • The winner will be announced on the first business Monday of the next month (in our October newsletter, on this thread, and on the Craftster blog).  We will contact you via Private Message, after the announcement, to get your prize package information, woohoo!
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster, or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project. Smiley

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner (US or non-US) will get:

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog
(3) and a prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

7  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Portrait of My New Best Friend on: April 01, 2019 06:13:04 PM
So excited!  I was down by the river last night and met a new friend!  Well, I didn't actually meet him yet, but hope to tonight.  He seemed to be a little grumpy, so I gave him some personal space.  Maybe he had an itch he couldn't reach or something. Huh  I don't know. Undecided

Anyway, I made a portrait of him.  He's so adorable.

8  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Pi Day Watercolor Cityscape on: March 11, 2019 09:50:55 PM
We're looking forward to Pi Day later this week, so we were looking through some of our projects last year.  This was a family favorite!

First, baby.sweets4ever taught baby.sweets4ever2 all about Pi. Smiley  We made a 4-piece Pi poster because everything is way more fun as poster size.

Then I printed (free) graph paper for each kiddo.  With black markers, they colored in the blocks to match the first few numbers of Pi.  They had no idea what they were creating at this point. Cool

Next I set them up with watercolors and they got to painting bands of colors.  One chose warm colors and the other chose cool colors.  I was secretly quite giddy about their selections. Cheesy

At this point, baby.sweets4ever proclaimed, "Hey!  It looks like I'm making a sunset!"  He was on to me. Cool  But he still didn't realize he had created a cityscape just yet...

And finally, they cut out their graph paper creations and we glued them onto their paintings.  A year later, they still have them hanging in their bedroom.   They LOVE them! Smiley

Here are some free printables I used! Kiss
9  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK) and Art Abandonment / Craftster Rocks! Free Rock Labels, Info and More! on: February 18, 2019 09:14:35 AM

If you are painting rocks, join our Craftster Rocks! Facebook group!

Rock Painting Basic Guidelines & Best Practices

1. Always be mindful of the environment and respectful of the community guidelines that already exist.
2. Seal each rock thoroughly.  Do not add or attach anything other than a securely-adhered label, as trinkets and attachments can pose littering and choking risks for animals.  Many use Mod Podge for attaching the labels to the back, followed by spray sealing the entire rock with at least two coats.
3. Do not hide rocks in national parks, state parks, or on private property.
4. Craftster, Pinterest and Facebook are great places to find inspiration for colorful creations and creative messages.

Printable Labels

We've created some printable sheets of itty bitty labels, if you need one for the bottom of your rock.  You can always just paint or use paint marker on the bottom of your rock instead of attaching a label, too.  Totally up to you!  These PDFs print on standard 8.5x11 printer paper.  Print which size you need, cut out a label and attach it to your rock.  Most people use Mod Podge or craft glue to adhere it prior to sealing the entire rock.

Facebook Group (optional fun!)

Sometimes when people find rocks "out in the wild," they take a photo and share it on Facebook with the rock's hashtag or group.  If you want to join a group for #craftsterrocks, we've just created it here!  Craftster Rocks #craftsterrocks group on Facebook.  Just request to join and myself, kittykill or rackycoo will get you added!
