1  Craft Challenge #124 - Craftster Rocks! - Entries Due Aug 1 - 8 - BONUS PRIZE! in Craftster Craft Challenges by sweets4ever on: July 02, 2018 12:54:52 PM
Craft Challenge #124 - Craftster Rocks! - Entries Due August 1 - 8

Have you ever been the recipient of a RAOK (random act of kindness), or perhaps stumbled upon a painted rock along your journeys?  Didn't that one little moment just feel amazing?  Let's spread more of those moments!  This month, we are rockin' it out Cheesy and challenging YOU to paint and hide a rock!  We're going to be spreading creativity and joy all throughout our communities and travels. Kiss

The challenge is simple, really!  Find a rock.  Paint it.  Label it with #CraftsterRocks.  Hide it. Cheesy  If you create a set of [obviously] themed rocks, you may enter the entire set as one entry.  The minimum requirement is just to paint and hide one rock, though! Smiley  Your entry must contain a photo of your painted rock.  If you want, you can include in progress photos or even a photo where you've hidden it, too!

Here are some basic guidelines and best practices for rock painting:

1. Always be mindful of the environment and respectful of the community guidelines that already exist.
2. Seal each rock thoroughly.  Do not add or attach anything other than a securely-adhered label, as trinkets and attachments can pose littering and choking risks for animals.  Many use Mod Podge for attaching the labels to the back, followed by spray sealing the entire rock with at least two coats.
3. Do not hide rocks in national parks, state parks, or on private property.
4. Craftster, Pinterest and Facebook are great places to find inspiration for colorful creations and creative messages.

Printable Labels
We've created some printable sheets of itty bitty labels, if you need one for the bottom of your rock.  You can always just paint or use paint marker on the bottom of your rock instead of attaching a label, too.  Totally up to you!  These PDFs print on standard 8.5x11 printer paper.  Print which size you need, cut out a label and attach it to your rock.  Most people use Mod Podge or craft glue to adhere it prior to sealing the entire rock.

Facebook Group (optional fun!)
Sometimes when people find rocks "out in the wild," they take a photo and share it on Facebook with the rock's hashtag or group.  If you want to join a group for #craftsterrocks, we've just created it here!  Craftster Rocks #craftsterrocks group on Facebook.  Just request to join and myself, kittykill or rackycoo will get you added! Smiley

2  Teacher Toolbox in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by sweets4ever on: May 30, 2018 06:46:26 PM
We wanted to make some gifts for our teachers for being amazing [read: surviving another school year with smiles on their faces.  bless them.  seriously.].  I didn't want to give them another mug or picture frame of my kid.  I just couldn't do it.  They see his face all year long.  They deserve a break.  Cheesy

We found the idea of a teacher toolkit/toolbox and thought it fit so well for their Montessori classroom.  We got the drawer label inspiration from The Teaching Willow and just ran with it wherever our noggins led us.

We started with a really simple garage organizer from Lowe's.  I coated it with two coats of Valspar Paint + Primer in the color Destiny.

I downloaded these watercolor flowers from Creative Market.  They were free the week we snagged them, but I'm not sure how often they do that.  Each week, that site has some featured, free goodies and we happened to see these when we were searching for toolbox decorations.

I used the "Print Then Cut" feature on Cricut to cut them out because I do not possess the patience to cut all of those little bits out by hand. Cheesy  We brushed the back of each piece with Mod Podge and smoothed them all over the toolbox.  Ezra especially loved this part. Cheesy

After the flowers were all applied, I sprayed it with 3 - 4 coats of Rust-Oleum Chalked Sealer.  Any craft sealer will do, though.  That's just what I had on hand.

We used the same floral clipart to carry onto the drawer labels.  I chose some.  Ezra chose some (glitter, stickers and crayons Cheesy ).  We just had fun filling it with supplies we know they have in their classroom.

Someone mentioned it would also be a great home craft or makeup organizer, and now I want to make one for myself. Grin

I didn't want to make the official announcement until I had gotten through a few more tests.  I think we are there now, though! Smiley  Photo hosting should be fully operational once again.  Please let me know if you experience any other issues with photo hosting/uploading.

9  January 2018 - New Feature: Tagging Members! in Latest News by sweets4ever on: January 10, 2018 03:24:33 PM

Now, when you link to a member profile in a post, it will also notify them via PM (personal message) that you've tagged them! Smiley

You can use this new feature in some pretty awesome ways:

  • Tag a member in a swap gallery thread to thank them for the wonderful package they sent you.
  • Tag a member to let them know their project or tutorial inspired the one you're posting.
  • Tag a member to ask them to input with their expertise on a craft discussion thread.
  • Tag a Moderator to give them a thank you & a hug!
  • If you are a Swap Organizer, tag a member to officially welcome them to the swap.
  • Tag a member to notify them of a project you think they'd love.
  • ...and more! Smiley

Using the tagging feature is very, very easy.  You simply use the Insert Link to Member button you've always used for linking to someone's profile.   Just click that little person icon in the post option buttons and type the member's username between the member brackets like this:
Code:
Hey, [member]sweets4ever[/member]!  Check out this post!  I think you'll love it.

Now, when you use this feature in a post, the system will automatically send them a friendly personal message to let them know they've been tagged! Smiley  They will receive a personal message similar to this one:

Hi sweets4ever,

This automated personal message is to notify you that sweets4ever has just mentioned you in a post!:)
Check out their post https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=401667.0.

Thanks!

Craftster and crew  Smiley

P.S. Please do not reply to this PM. We won't see it. To turn these notices off, please visit your PM.

All profiles are set to automatically have this feature enabled, but if you would prefer to not be notified when someone thinks you're awesome Cheesy you can disable it in your profile settings via the yellow tape measure menu at the top of the screen.  MY CRAFTSTER > My Profile > Personal Message Options -- Notify by personal message when a member tags you in a post.

Many thanks to kittykill for suggesting this new feature and to everyone who voted to make it happen! Kiss  PS.  That sentence just tagged her to come look at this thread!  How fun is that?? Cheesy

Enjoy! Smiley

10  Re: A facelift for Craftster? It's been 5 years... in Suggest New Boards and New Features by sweets4ever on: December 06, 2017 08:43:45 AM
Right now we are contending with photobucket not allowing 3rd parties to access pictures. I am working on tutorials, making sure that they can still be used. It is a very long process trying to recover pictures, but we hope that in 2018 we can put a dent in it.

Photobucket broke the internet. Cry  This process is seriously not fun.  I need to make a "news" post about it, so users can [hopefully!] help us and update their posts along the way, too.
