Class: Defense Against the Dark Arts
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name: Minecraft Zombie
Project Page Link: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=441353.0
Brief Description: Anyone familiar with Minecraft knows that in survival mode, the game requires you to battle zombies come nightfall unless you can build an adequate shelter to keep them out! This little zombie is my ode to the Minecraft Mob Battle, and also just happens to be kiddo's Halloween costume. Wink
Project Picture:

Class: Flying
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name: Minecraft Enderman Costume
Slytherin Soiree Autumn Masquerade Ball: Make Your Costume
Project Page Link: N/A
Brief Description: This Enderman costume is complete with the whispy particles that float around Endermen, much like whisps of smoke.
Project Picture:

Class: Potions
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name: Minecraft Trunk
Project Page Link: N/A
Brief Description: Have you heard the newest song sensation, How do I craft this again? No? You mean it's not on constant repeat in every house in America? It's not the sing-a-long song of choice for every family event? Really? Huh. Anyway, our trunk decorations for kiddo's school trunk or treat was (you guessed it) Minecraft themed. We sang How do I craft this again over and over and over again while crafting all of our trunk accessories and while assembling our decorations. It was only after we found the York Peppermint Patties in the Minecraft chest (part of our candy hand-outs) that we FINALLY stopped singing. Go figure. Smiley

152  Minecraft Zombie! in Halloween Costumes by Abbeeroad on: November 02, 2015 09:52:08 AM
This year kiddo wanted to be a zombie from Minecraft. But unlike last year's Minecraft skeleton, this year, it had to be full on (i.e. just the head was not going to cut it). At first, this seemed like an engineering nightmare to my non-designer brain, but this awesome post by a fellow Minecraft parent made me believe we could pull it off.

Here's kiddo on Halloween, full-on Minecraft zombified:

We started with A LOT of cardboard. Pretty much every piece was created to size in order to scale correctly for the costume as a whole and to fit my kid. Here's a peek at the process...

Head and torso:

Successful test fit 1:

The torso box was a bit narrow and I ended up cutting the sides to allow kiddo more movement and to make the on/off process a bit easier (kiddo still had to turn his head sideways to get the torso on).

Then I did the legs, complete with knee hinges as in our inspiration post (seriously, if you didn't click the link, go back and check it out)...and test fit #2:

This pic might be before we added the knee hinges - I thought maybe my legs were wide enough not to need them, but re-thought that pretty quick!

Then it was time to commence painting! Everything was primed first, then marked with a 1x1 inch grid:

The arms (per our inspiration post!) were fully enclosed, with "handles" at the end for kiddo to hold.

Last year, kiddo didn't actually wear the skeleton head trick or treating because he couldn't see very well...so this year, I cut a big square out for his face. I think it's cuter this way, haha.

Lots of pics....

Thanks for looking! Cheesy

Class: Care of Magical Creatures
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name: Natural Dye Swatches
Project Page Link: Check out Salt and Still who ran the workshop I attended and The Market at Fifth Ave who hosted the event!
Brief Description: I attended a natural dye workshop in Asbury Park, NJ this past Saturday. It was awesome. Lots of people worked together to cut swatches, mix ingredients, soak materials, and hang them to dry. Everyone went home with a little swatch sampler of naturally dyed fabrics and a spectrum of results from different modifiers. I will definitely be trying this at home, but it will not be the same without the help of many hands. Smiley
Project Pictures:

The "many hands" (I'm sitting in the green shirt with my back to the camera) involved in the workshop:

I decided to link to the photographer's Instagram for this photo instead: https://instagram.com/p/9PpWGFNXbZ/

Just to ensure credit is given where it's due. Smiley

The unmodified swatches:

And post-modifiers (we used vinegar, soda ash, cream of tartar, iron, or overdying depending on the base dye material):

It was super fun and not nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be. I just need the materials and I'll be doing this on my own next time!

Challenge: PS#4 - Kaos with Keys
Team: The Witches of East Hogsmeade (Mistress Jennie & FiberAlchemist)
House: Gryffindor
Project Name: Santa Maria - for Extra Credit!
Project Link: N/A
Brief Description: My first grader had an extra credit assignment to make one of Christopher Columbus' ships as a way to learn more about exploration. After discussing several ideas together, kiddo decided on a cardboard-based design. I snagged some boxes out of the rubbish pile at the office - saving them from certain doom - to serve as the base for his project. Kiddo chose the ship he wanted to recreate and found an image to mimic online. He drew the sides of the ship onto the cardboard and I cut it out. Kiddo thought a plank "poop deck" was essential, so we used craft sticks to connect the ship's sides, threaded through "slits" I cut into the cardboard sides. Some tape for the bottom and a good coat of paint finished the base. Kiddo made the sails himself and attached them to some bamboo sticks with tape. He's pretty proud of it, and I'm pretty proud of him!

Project Pictures:

Progress pic showing off the recycled materials:

And this is what I got when I asked him to look "proud":
