1  Re: Winter Book Swap 2019 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by Abbeeroad on: December 09, 2019 08:45:55 AM
I received an awesome package from curiousfae over the weekend!

First off, she generously included a book and goodies for my son after hearing that he had an interest in Stephen King. The book sounds interesting, I'll probably steal it from him. Wink

He was psyched! Cheesy

And for me....the books!

And the goodies!

Actually, some of the chocolate was for my daughters, too, lol. I may or may not have stolen a chocolate covered animal cracker...or three. Cheesy

The books sound so good! I seriously can't wait to dive in! I'm going to read East first because it looks and sounds like something I should have read already! I feel so thoroughly pegged. Wink

Oh, and here's a close up of the feather:

She didn't think my polar bear book mark was big enough, lol. I love it all!! Oh, I am realizing that the bookmark she made for my son is not in these pics. D'oh! I'll have to snag one tonight.

Thank you so much, Kelli!! You brightened our whole house. Smiley

Abbey I love that flamingo fabric!

Haha! Of course you do! Cheesy

Happy Advanced Studies Friday! How's everyone doing on their OWLs and NEWTs?

I have no progress to report. Every time I get the cars out the girls end up playing with them. Mr. Road has a feeling that they would freak out if I tried to take them apart. Have a feeling the cozy coupes are not getting a face lift after all...I might have to switch gears.

Oh my gosh, Ant Bee, I LOVE THAT WEASLEY SWEATER!

Also - thanks again for carrying on Advanced Studies Friday without me last week. I planned and ran an Art Night at my son's school last Friday. It was super fun but A LOT of work. I should have made it an OWL or NEWT itself!

Just a few things from me...

Class: Astronomy
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Fabric Covered Diaper Boxes
Brief Description: Organizing toddler land (also known as my house) is a constant, never ending battle. Rather than purchasing more plastic or fabric boxes that I will end up throwing away, I decided to upcycle some of the many, many diaper boxes we accumulate on a weekly basis. I pulled some fabric from my stash, hot glued it to some boxes, filled them with toys, and ta-da! Instant organization with zero purchasing and zero waste!

Class: Divination
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Naruto Costume
Brief Description: Not only did this costume involve LOTS of scissor action, it also ended up being pretty difficult. The jacket had to be totally re-done and stitched on an old hoodie, but it came out in the end. The hair is lots of little felt pieces hot glued on an aluminum foil and duct tape mold of kiddo's head.

Challenge: Headmistress Challenge: Burrow
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Photo Booth Backdrop
Brief Description: For the Art Night last Friday, I took an old sheet and turned it into a photo booth backdrop! Lots of painters tape, any paint colors in my stash (I added a few dots and circles to the more drab colors), and hours of painting in my dining room later and the transformation was complete! Here are a few shots, including one of me and my art-night-planning partner in crime during the event!

4  Naruto! in Costumes: Completed Projects by Abbeeroad on: November 08, 2019 08:15:08 AM
My son is obsessed with Naruto, so of course we had to do a Naruto Halloween!

Here are the pics of the completed costume and the trunk of my car decorated like the Ichiraku Ramen Shop.

I bought two yards of orange fabric and a bunch of yellow felt for this project. The leaf village headband was also purchased as kiddo didn't want to take a chance with such an important element of the costume. Wink

I made the pants based on a pair of joggers my son has. The jacket was initially a fail. I tried to create one from scratch based on a hoodie my son had:

I had too much fabric in the front blue shoulder area and my zipper ended up not disconnecting at the bottom...I was so unhappy with it, I picked out all of my stitches to disconnect the blue section from the orange, cut out the zip, and then just sewed what was left to the hoodie I'd tried to mimic. I cut off the hood, added some batting to the collar and it came together! Whew! I added a piece of red felt to the back with the swirl cut out of HTV via my Cricut.

Now let's talk about the hair! I'm actually really proud of how it came out, lol. I used this doll hair tutorial as inspiration. Mr. Road made a template of my son's head with aluminum foil and duct tape reinforcement. Then I just went to town with hot glue and felt! It came out so cool and really makes the costume.

Here's the only shot I got of him standing in it on actual Halloween. It got a bit rumpled by then, but still held up great.

Thanks for looking!!

Class: Charms
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Rust dyed and flour resist stamp slow cloth swatch
Brief Description: I made this as a little extra for alteredmommy in the recent monoprint fabric swap. The background fabric I rust dyed with some metal shavings from Mr. Road's garage and the bicycle stamp was done using flour resist and dye. The other accent pieces were actually from a natural dyeing workshop I attended some time ago. I used sashiko-style running stitches to combine all these elements into a piece of "slow cloth." The idea is that it is not a quick project, but something that takes time and mindfulness. This project definitely made me "slow down" a bit, especially this time of year when the impending holiday season seems to ramp up the speed of life.

Challenge: Headmistress Challenge: Hagrid's Giant Pumpkins
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Carved Peppa and Naruto
Brief Description: We carve pumpkins for Halloween every year - this year, they embody some current favorite characters in my house: Peppa Pig and Naruto!
Project Picture:

Class: Herbology
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Mono Print Fabric Squares
Brief Description: The gelli plate and I just don't really get along. I want us to like each other, I really do, but it just seems that everything I try to do with it is a disappointing substitute for the magic some folks manage to create. So, signing up for the mono print fabric swap definitely took me out of my element a bit. Or at least, I thought it would. Once I just started putting the brayer right onto my fabric and adding stamped accents as I saw fit, I had so much fun making these layers, that maybe this is my element after all. Wink Though there were moments in the middle that I almost chucked them out the window!

Holiday Challenge: Halloween
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Butterfly Costumes
Brief Description: After much back and forth and deliberation, I settled on making butterfly costumes for the girls for Halloween. I used a lot of my dyed fabric for the wings, and love how they came out. Now just to get them to wear the darn things...

Can I just say I am LOVING Hermione's Homework Planner? I feel so organized! Cheesy

Challenge: Detention: Reparo
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Boro Patched Leggings
Brief Description: Boy toddlers are tough on clothes! I noticed a hole in one of the girls' leggings and decided to give it a patch. Smiley
