2  self watering container in Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Completed Projects by saratera on: July 01, 2011 04:55:18 PM
i've been reading about self watering containers, the earthbox, etc. and wanted to make some that were nicer looking than buckets. i used stuff lying around the house inside a clay pot. (the pot has no hole for drainage)

it's half of a pop bottle, the bottom of a plastic ice cream container, and a 25 cent funnel. i poked holes all over the bottom for drainage and air circulation.

(yes the bottle is taped in) i wasn't too worried about the plastic since this is an experiment, and it's mostly from food containers.  they are working great and my plants are growing like crazy! i water it less than once a week.

also- here's as best as i could get of a close up of the bracelet i made her. it's from an old romance comic book i had of a guy trying to fight another guy over a woman, so i thought it fit with the "he who angers you controls you" theme.

he's saying "i'll get that guy!"

6  peanut day purse in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by saratera on: February 18, 2011 05:26:06 PM
i made this bag from my own pattern that was influenced by amy butler's cosmo bag. it is made from a vest i found in the thrift store from a kiwanis peanut day fundraiser. it's not vinyl or oilcloth, but a little waxy. the pics aren't GREAT, it doesn't really look as flourescent.

you can kind of see the sides where it says peanut day.
it has a magnetic snap closure

thanks for looking, comments welcome!

7  ugly art-> awesome art! in CHALLENGE 59 ENTRIES by saratera on: February 05, 2011 12:19:35 PM
i went to multiple stores, decided on a hideous jacket, but when i went back for it, it was gone! i decided i needed a frame for my new cross stitch that i got from my last craft swap. i found this LOVELY one for $7

the print was copywrited in 1977. you can't see it in the picture, but it was also very faded and had a dark ring around the edge where it was under the frame. i knew immediately that i finally found a use for my bottlecaps i have been collecting for years.

about 80 bottle caps to fill the inside, but that wasn't enough!

ahh, that's more like it!

finally, a new home for the awesome cross stitch made by technogoddess for the always sunny craft swap

i felt the need to keep the original print. if you look closely, you might be able to see the darker, non-faded part.

about 150 bottlecaps total. thanks for looking! this is an awesome challenge!

9  SPACEBALLS: THE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES in Halloween Costumes by saratera on: November 06, 2010 09:15:49 AM
my friends and i went as a group as the characters from spaceballs. if you have never seen the movie, that is unfortunate and you owe it to yourself to do so. here we go...

everyone had something handmade.my costume (dot matrix)was completely from scratch with no pattern. princess vespa's dress was a reconned tanktop, and skirt from fabric and a thrifted nightie. barf's nametag, ears, tail, cuffs, and shoe inserts were made, and i made lonestar's schwartz ring and medallion. dark helmet was a last minute addition, the cape was made from fabric i had laying around, and we threw on a darth vader helmet.

i had to spraypaint the wig, used heavy interfacing for the skirt and puff sleeves. the virgin alarm is glued on.

closeup of barf's furry parts.

lonestar's schwarts ring (craftfoam) and medallion (shrink plastic)

we won 1st place in the contest at the bar we went to. hope you like it too!

10  tobacco and pipe wallets in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by saratera on: October 18, 2010 05:33:38 PM
this is my first post.

long ago, i made my husband a pouch to carry his RYO tobacco. he used it until it was worn out, but it was basically just a pocket for a package of tobacco, and slots for papers and a lighter.

i was thinking of making him a new one when i saw Luinecu's post  with the genius idea to use a zippy pouch for the loose tobacco, and more room for other stuff. i based my pattern off of that idea. my husband really likes it.

THEN my other friend saw it and insisted i made him one, but for his pipe. since he's such a tough guy, i chose to use teddy bear fabric for the interior.

the pocket is lined with iron on vinyl to keep the tobacco from drying out.

let me know what you think!
