1  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / perscription bottles on: August 13, 2006 09:02:49 AM
hello all!
It has been WAY too long since i posted on craftster! But i am having a crafty emergency!

So, i work at an animal hospital, and a while back we recived about 30  average sized perscription bottles without caps. My manager was going to toss em out but i couldnt bear to let all that shiny clear plastic go into the trash.

so now they are in my house staring at me saying "MAKE SOMETHING!!! ANYTHING, YOU CLUTTERBUG!" thinking about cutting them into rings and doing something with those, or melting them or something.

i dunno.

2  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / wishbone- caution, not for the faint of heart on: January 06, 2006 11:36:56 AM
So this is a painting i made based off of a very difficult experience.
Currently i work in the kennel of an animal hospital, and i absolutely LOVE it, but its not easy. Especially when really sick or injured dogs come in with animal control or even clients.
My worst experience was a Saturday, a few months ago. The story is : A woman brought in a dog that belonged to her neighbor. you can read the news article here: http://www.wtoctv.com/Global/story.asp?s=4251168, but the gist is that basically, this dog was so infested with fleas and other parasites that he scratched his own face off. No eyelids, no nose, just a horrible wreck of a dog... Which would have happened over a very extended period of time, but the owner "kept the dog in the closet" so as not to be bothered with it. The dogs name was wishbone. Someone i work with thought it would be funny if i saw it... (i tend to be really sensitive about these things) and told me to look as they pulled him up out of the blanket. At which point i clocked out, went home, cried for a few hours, and spoiled the hell out of my dogs.
It was really etched into my brain. i cant forget it at all. It really bothered me how my mind would wander to it. So i decided to finally get it down on paper to make myself feel better. Then i started thinking about a ton of things I've seen that make me feel the same way. so this may become a series. I also may sell them, or prints, and donate some proceeds to local non-profit animal agencies.

Anyways, if you think you can stomach it, here is a (tastefull) version of what i saw that day.

Any comments and critiques welcome, and i hope i didn't disturb anyone!
3  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Does Cold and Flu affect your crafting? on: December 11, 2005 08:09:04 AM
Ok guys, here it is, cold and flu season. It seems that everyone i know is getting sick. So lets say, maybe i get sick. Now, can i keep crafting and selling my wares? Or should i worry about sending my germs all over the country? Maybe put my owls in quarantine for a few days? use disinfectant?
Do you think germs are transferable through wool?
Howsabout jewelry?
what do YOU think?
(thank god for paypal and "fake" money, huh?)
4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Impossible Swap! Its oh so IMPOSSIBLE!! on: November 14, 2005 10:34:29 AM
so here's my idea: people submit a list of people who's work they feel is comparible with the quality of thier work. Then those people pair up. THEN:

i send you something
you send me something
i send you another thing
you send me another thing
then so on and so forth until it becomes

(no more time, rescources, ideas, etc.)

like craft pen pals.

you could make like 1 thing every month or something. whichever pair makes it the longest should get a prize or something.

well, it sounds like fun to me......
what do YOU think?
5  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 7 ENTRIES / Woven portrait tapestry! (image heavy) on: November 06, 2005 08:47:39 AM
This is a piece i did on a whim a while back. I took four or five pairs of jeans and tore them into strips. then i wove them onto a very large picture frame. I didn't take pictures of the process but o have 2 that i am working on so you can get an idea of what it looks like if you haven't seen it done before.

just your basic over-under-over-under.

ok, here's the actual piece. A close up portrait of my friend's eyes.

its 18x24 inches. I spent about 2 days creating the whole piece, from tearing the strips of denim to sectioning them into different shades, and then actually weaving and embellishing.
I pulled threads out of the jeans and re stitched them to add texture and depth.

and added the buttons in on the eyes as a "twinkle" in her eye.

When i did work on it i only stopped to eat and sleep. My fingers turned blue, and when i blew my nose little pieces of denim came out! I put it in an art show a while back. Since then it's just been hanging in my hallway. Its not awesomely functional like a lot of the projects, but it is nice to look at!  Soooo... enjoy!

This is the site for the Craft Fair i organize in savannah, GA. Buti'm only 20 and feel that i'm very niave about this stuff. (i never even participated in one, just went ahead to start my own.)

So, the first one went ok but not great. Me and my friend and co-organizer would love to know what the biggest complaints crafters have, or any advice oranizers have for the next one in October.
