1  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Discussion and Questions / Re: Help with this bow on: April 28, 2010 07:32:02 PM
Make a template like this one:  http://www.hair-hardware.com/articles.asp?id=138  Make it as wide as you want your finished bow to be.

Have a threaded needle ready.  I use button thread to sew my bows, but upholstery thread or several strands of embroidery thread are also good choices.

Find the center of your ribbon by folding it in half and creating a crease.  Place the crease of the ribbon in the center of the template.  Wrap both sides of the ribbon around the back of the template making an "X" with the ribbon.  Use some alligator clips to hold the ribbon in place so it does not slide around.  Turn the template over so the "X" is on the top.

Take your threaded needle.  Starting from what is now the "bottom", make 3 stitches up the center.  You want to make sure your stitches go over where the ribbons overlap.

Slide the ribbon off the template.  Holding the bow with one hand (thumb on top, forefinger on the bottom), pull on the thread until the ribbon is creased tightly in the middle.  Wrap the thread around the center of the bow several times (I do 3 or 4) and then tie it off.

If you did not finish the ends of your ribbon when you cut it, do it now.  Then finish it off with a center knot.

You are definitely going to do more now....she is so cute and the dress does not look like it was made from a pillowcase!!!

How old a child will fit into a pillowcase dress?  Is it just for toddlers?  I have two nieces, 2 and 4--just curious if both would fit as I want no jealousy issues!!

You can make a pillowcase dress is just about any size by adjusting the length.  And when they are too short to be a dress they are cute tunic tops!

I make pillowcase style dresses from regular cotton quilting fabric.  It is so hard to find cute pillowcases at decent prices.

Here is the length chart I use.
Size Chart

Size  Length
3 Months  12 inches
6 Months  14 inches
9 Months  16 inches
12 Months  18 inches
18 Months  20 inches
2 Toddler  22 inches
3 Toddler  24 inches
4/6 Toddler  26 inches
Size 5/7  28 inches
Size 6/8  30 inches

I like to use a candle lighter to heat seal ribbon.  I received a woodburner as a Christmas gift that can be used to cut the ribbon and seal it at the same time but I have not used it yet!

This dress is so cute.  Love the bunny fabric!
