1  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Star Trek Napkin Drawings on: October 24, 2009 05:35:00 AM
After 2 years of being with my boyfriend (we are now on 4) he finally admitted to me that he loves Star Trek. Somehow he hid this from me. So off we went when the new movie came out. It didn't take much coercing though since I love Zachary Quinto. The same week that I saw the movie my friend was putting out her local zine called the Napkin News which she distributes in Napa. She needed some art and so this was one thing I submitted to her. She ended up not using it even though she is also obsessed.

Napkins with ink brush pen (crayola I think surprsingly) I also used some white out for some highlights. I wasn't sure how the materials would turn out but it looks great. I decided to arrange it in a setting so I made a cheese sandwich in the shape of the Star Trek logo. This was really fun.

2  COOKING / Dessert / Assortment of different cakes (picture heavy) on: October 24, 2009 03:33:43 AM
i wanted to share some cakes i have made in recent years. they are definitely not professional looking but they are fun none-the-less and they tasted great (yes, even the alst one lol). i'm in the process of making a very interesting cake for a friend's birthday today which i am planning on documenting each step. i'm going to be using fondant for the first time so we'll see how it goes.

big guy in a little (woman's) swimsuit. for a friend's birthday. i colored the inside red and i know i pooped red for days. tmi? a little too much food color. i basically painted colored frosting all over the cake.

i made this simple spiderweb cake a few years ago. i really like purple and orange together for halloween. it's a change from the norm of black and orange.

i am a little disappointed because i had a full length picture of this cake but it was broken. this was made for a friend's birthday. it's made of just a round cake and black and white frosting. this was also my first attempt at a cooked frosting and it used egg whites. it was sorta like a runny marshmellow so some of jack's face sorta slid. i had drawn out the rest of his body and it took up my entire kitchen counter.

this was made for another friends birthday. she loves pandas. i used three cupcakes and a regular round cake.

i know this is not technically dessert but i attempted a diaper cake about a year ago for my friend's baby shower. i added a picture frame, a homemade quilt and bib set that my mom makes and some ribbon around a really cute set of diapers. inside held a pack of baby wipes. i tied it all up with some ribbon and fabric. it turned out beautiful if i do say so myself.

3  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / Meg and Jack-o-lanterns on: October 23, 2009 05:48:04 AM
i've started a tradition of taking my favorite band and cutting and slicing their likeness into gutted out pumpkins. i especially enjoyed the play on words too. skipped pumpkin carving in 2007.

2006-i really enjoyed these two pumpkins the best so far. meg looks like a scary monster.

2008-used several toothpicks since there was a little more detail than i expected. tried to shave the inside enough so light would go through. that is where i made my crucial mistakes but every year is a learning experience.

not sure about my pumpkin/s for this year but i will add to the post once completed next week.
