21  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / how long should drum carding a batt take?!? on: March 11, 2008 01:21:48 AM
So I got myself a new toy recently. A Strauch petite drum carder. I love it! Only thing is that it takes me SOOOOOOOOooooooooo long to card anything!  And I'm starting with roving!  I can't imagine starting out with raw wool or something.

So, let's put a sort of poll out there. How long does it take you to card up a batt on your drum carder? I realize everyone's answer will be different. Depends on the model of carder, the type of fiber, etc. I just want to get a general idea. Cause I've spent up to 2 hours on less than one ounce of fiber on the petite!  ouch! =0)

wow. it takes me forever to find these requests and reply to them! sorry! I just got them from work (Jo-Anns).  I can't help but shop there every time I go in!  It sucks. My paycheck goes in and out again so quick. Oh well. =0)

omigod I love it! I'm totally obsessed with dan deacon and that video too! I watched one a while ago that was with arnold the governator as conan the barbarian featured throughout but now I can't find it!  The crystal cat vid I can find now is the one I think you may be mentioning?  if you know how to direct me back to the conan version . do tell!
and also, in true craftster form. I love the hoodie. I've done similarly faded and silly things. you're like. ok. it seemed super awesome last night!  woah... but this is so cool! I'm totally jealous I didn't think of it! =0) cheers!

How'd you do the serging? Did you take the blade off to do it?
that's what I want to know! I was gifted an old janome serger and this is the only thing I can't figure out yet. (OK. so this is my first day with an actual plug cord and foot pedal. But still!)

help! what is the stitch called and how do you do that? =0)
is it flatlock?

Fantastic! Did you machine or hand sew the lining in?

the first one I made I followed the tutorial more strictly (not that I really "followed" it per se anyway, but read on).  She has you attatch the lining separately afterwards. ie-sew the bag. sew the lining. then sew the lining to the bag by hand when them all inside out rightside out, you know how it's done.. but that's not something I was really looking forward to doing. so I didn't!  I gave that first bag to a friend since I know I'm too lazy to get around to it.
The subsequent bags have the lining sewn WITH the outside fabric. sandwich style. seams are all finished with double row of stitching and zig zag. don't know if you can see in the pix. but you could also trim them with a pinking shear or bind them with bias before you turn the bag right side out.  Smiley

This is the most awesome cool purse ever.  I tried looking for the tutorial you talk about...but couldn't find it.  Could you post a link possibly for what you followed??  Pretty please??

Stuff looks awesome =)

I spent a few days making sparkle vinyl rick rack, it's awesome stuff. I found 4 different styles of rotary cutters and went to town.

I know. I got that set of cutting blades, too! I just sort of stumbled upon the idea and it worked so great! I had to use it. I'm glad I'm not the only one! =0)

thank you thank you so much!  Grin
I feel so validated by you people! woohoo!

the purse feet I also got at the Mill End store. they have almost everything there! But you should be able to find them at a good fabric store or definitely online. They're like $1.99/per set.  I just cut a slit type x-shape thingie in the fabric with an x-acto knife and slipped in the ends. They're like those manilla envelope thingies. you know those brass colored closures on those envelopes? how you fold down the metal pieces to make a line?  It's like that on the bottom of the feet. they're probably other kinds out there. but that's the kind I got anyway.

ok. that's a long title. but it's all those things! Recently I've started to see all this sparkle/glitter vinyl stuff around and I want some! SO when I finally saw some for sale at a store near me (the Mill End Store for those of you in the Portland or Beaver-tron area) I grabbed it!
This is the third of this type of bag I've made. there are other pix over here:

But this latest bag is by far my favorite. I've already moved everything into it and wore it out to starbucks today! weeeee!

Hope you likee. One thing to remember. In the "tutorial" I found for this type of bag (not with this type of lining though-she did it differently) they never mentioned what type of zipper to use. You have to have a separating zipper if you want to make this type of bag in ONE PIECE! K. schpeal over. enjoi

***ps*** notice that matching wallet/card holder case thingie. Matchy matchy, I know. but pruhty no?
