Brief Bio, News in Your Life, etc: |
I've been making stuff for longer than many people on Craftster have been alive, which is a frightening thing to consider. It started in the usual way with LEGO, Meccano, Tinkertoys and all those wonderfully toxic crafts of the 1960's and 70's, like resin casting and asbestos modelling clay. I guess most people grow out of it but I never did and today I work as a theatrical prop builder, which is one of the few jobs that allows me to make use of those dangerous childhood skills.
Prop building demands a broad skill set and yet there are awkward gaps in mine. I'm pretty good at woodwork, do a bit of carving and sculpting as needed, yet I never learned to weld and in fact am fairly useless with metal in general. While I do decorative painting and faux finishes, and can reproduce things as required, my freehand drawing is wretched and painting not much better. (I've learned to fake the latter when I have to.) I can sew but not knit or crochet, which is inexcusable, since my mother and brother were both knitters.
I think Craftster might be a way to trick myself into learning new skills (and learn to do properly some of the things I now just fake).
And now, thanks to Craftster, one of my life goals has been met with my first (and probably only) posting on BoingBoing.net. |
