11  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / my desperate-for-spring bag on: February 05, 2005 03:37:56 PM
i was inspired by the cool uses of vintage fabric (like these! https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=24695.0), so i went to my local thrift store and found this little piece of daisy-covered fabric (from the 70s?).  it was enough to make this little "wristlet" (the lining is a bright yellow) and a pin cushion for my friend who's started sewing again.  now i wish i had more nice spring fabric--i'm sooo tired of winter.

12  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / housewarming gift that i can sew? on: February 05, 2005 09:08:15 AM
hi, i hope some of the crafty folks around can help me out.  my imagination only seems to run to purse-making these days!

i want to make a housewarming gift for my sister-in-law and brother-in-law-to-be.  they're an older couple with kids, so they have most of what they need around the house, but they just bought their first house and i think the occassion merits a gift.  my sis-in-law has a vision of her en-suite bathroom as an oasis (she has 4 boys), and i'd like to do something for that.  any ideas out there?  i have a huge stash of 26" upholstery squares to use up and i can sew... i also have to send this gift in the mail, so i don't want to make something heavy.

if you can help me out with ideas, i'll pray to the craft gods on your behalf!
13  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / i tried free-stitching on the machine for this purse... (picture heavy) on: January 26, 2005 12:41:28 PM
...and ripped my finger with the needle.  truly gross!  Tongue but somehow i managed not to get blood on the purse.  this was originally a simple jordy (my first in a bigger size) made out of microfibre upholstery scraps.  my boyfriend thought it looked too floppy (sadly, he was right), so i decided to stiffen the purse up by sewing scrap bits on the outside.  someone in crafster (can't find the link) gave me the idea to stitch all over it.  to do this you stitch continuously however you want, as long as you didn't cross over any of your stitching lines.  i thought this sounded like fun.  next time i do this, though, i'm going to use one of those hoops that holds your fabric in place for machine embroidery...

here's another little purse i made with more microfibre scraps.  it seems to be stiff enough in a smaller purse.

both of these went to my sis for xmas.
14  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / darn sweater shrunk...into a purse! on: January 26, 2005 12:24:46 PM
inspired by all the other felters, i took a sweater i'd shrunk and "felted" it properly.  it was so easy to work with!  i made this little clutch purse for a friend of mine.  the flap on the clutch is made of the old collar from the sweater.

the lining is this fabric i've been saving for something soft and pretty:

and a little flower to jazz it up.

has anyone else tried felting old sweaters to make purses?  i've tried it with big sweaters (from value village), and it does a number on my washing machine...
15  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Gamblin' Grandma Clutch and Golf Purses on: January 17, 2005 04:21:20 PM
okay, so i might be getting carried away with posting now that i finally got around to getting a photobucket account!  but i've been dying to post since i see other people's cool purses every day.  these are some things i made for xmas gifts.

i made my fiance's grandma a clutch and some organizer bags out of gambling fabric, since she loves going to vegas.

it has a red velvet lining.

the picture's not very good of the drawstring bags i made to go with the clutch.

my mom started golfing a while ago, so i made her this jordy-bottom tote with green golf-pattern lining and some antique buttons i got at the thrift store.

i was afraid to ask her at xmas if she's still into golf!

out of the rest of the lining fabric, i made some shoe bags, a kleenex holder, and this little "wristlet" (Simplicity 5184).

the piping was a bit of a pain...but would be easier with bought piping i think.
