Challenge/Battle/Alert: Craftster 10th Anniversary challenge!
Team/Ninja:   Of Ships and Men
Project Geekdom (if any): Pacific Rim
Bonus Points: Nerdy
Project Name:   Kaiju Freezer Paper Stencil Dress
Project Page Link (if available): https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=426569.msg5080340#msg5080340
Brief Description: I saw Pacific Rim and instantly fell in love! This has to be my fastest fall in love to craft fandom yet! The jaegercon on tumblr really helped pushed me to do it, too. I made these and the dress in two days! Alas, no dress pics, I just can't seem to photograph it right.

Challenge/Battle/Alert: May Fandom
Team/Ninja:   Of Ships and Men
Project Geekdom (if any): Disney
Bonus Points: Nerdy
Project Name:   Purple and black quilt
Project Page Link (if available):
Brief Description: I started this quilt last summer, then put it away for the school year since I needed to hand quilt it. This summer, I just wanted it done! I looked around a bit online and found out about hand tieing a quilt. I chose to do that instead and had it done in a day or so! For the backing, I used an old bed sheet that is apparently official Disney merch. (It has the Disney copyright on it)

Challenge/Battle/Alert: June Randomizer
Team/Ninja:   Of Ships and Men
Project Geekdom (if any): Star Trek
Bonus Points: Super Nerdy Bonus
Project Name:   Comm Badge xstitch
Project Page Link (if available):
Brief Description: I have a friend who loves Star Trek, so for her birthday I decided to make her a little xstitch. I don't do much needlework, but even so this was really easy. I actually made this even easier by using only three colors instead of five like in the pattern. Despite how easy it was, I still managed to miscount the X's in a few places, but not enough to ruin it thank goodness. I still need to finish the back, but her birthday is not until December. Tongue

Research Project Proposal

Project Name:   Nerdy Lolita

Team/Ninja:  Of Ships and Men

Brief Description:  I've been wanting to get into lolita for a few years now, and I think my sewing skill and design skills are up for the challenge! I want to create three outfits, one a version of Kaylee's pink dress from Firefly, one based off of the TARDIS, and one on the anime Attack on Titan. I will make either a dress or a skirt, a hair accessory, a bag, and jewelry for each one. In addition, I'll make at least two petticoats, one bell shaped, one A-line.

Materials:  cotton fabric, elastic, zippers, sewing basics, tulle, organza, beads, wire, possibly more once I finalize each design.
Timeline: I'm not sure about this but since there will be Nerd Battles every month, I assume research proposals can carry on. Rather than weeks, I have parts.
Part 1: Design outfits and accessories, figure out ideal fabric choices and yardage.
Part 2: Muslin fittings
Part 3: Price check materials, buy.
Part 4: Sew!

To spread out the cost, after the muslins, I'm going to buy the materials and sew each outfit one at a time.

2  Kaiju Freezer Paper Stenciled Dress in Stenciling: Completed Projects by misskohaku on: August 13, 2013 01:46:47 PM
To me, Craftster is where I go to learn new techniques as well as to look up nerd crafts.
When I first saw Pacific Rim, this was the first place I looked for crafts. Alas, there were none. I decided to fix that! As soon as I saw the kaiju warning sign, I realized it would be a perfect stencil.
I learned how to use freezer paper stencils from this website a few years ago. This is my favorite way of using the stencils, painting the negative space around the image.

(No pics of the finished dress, I just can't seem to get a decent enough photo of it.

I finally finished a quilt that I'd started (and then not touched since) last summer! It's a bit wonky, but it is my first quilt and I just wanted a little quilt to throw on when I get a bit cold in the dorms.

Also, congrats smashu! I looked up the bee and it looks really cool!

Challenge: May Textbook
Team: Of Ships and Men
Project Geekdom: Sci-Fi
Bonus Points: Discovery and Super nerdy
Project Name: Oh My Stars jewelry set
Project Page Link: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=423711.0#axzz2TblfXV6j
Brief Description: Whether sailing among them or sailing under them, the stars are a sailor's best friend. At first I thought this would be the hardest challenge, and then it ended up being my first! I started with the bracelet, which has 13 stars, but then I thought why stop there? The earrings have three stars each, and the necklace four, so when added all up there are 23 stars!
Although I've closed jump rings before, this was the first time I've done the wiggling closed technique, so I think that counts for Discovery.

5  Oh My Stars Jewelry set in Beads: Completed Projects by misskohaku on: May 17, 2013 08:09:42 PM
For my first entry into the Summer Nerd Games, I made this jewelry set! It helped me destash all of my star beads except two and became a belated birthday gift for my mom. This was also the first time I've closed jump rings with the wiggling technique I found in the book "Chained" by Rebeca Mojica.

And some close ups!

8  1st attempt at Easter egg dye in Dyeing: Completed Projects by misskohaku on: April 05, 2013 12:31:30 AM
To make some of my blah stash wool more exciting to use, I decided to do some dyeing. Here is my first attempt at dyeing yarn with Easter egg dye. So much fun to do! I've already given the little green one to a friend for helping me to detangle it, plan to turn the very multi colored one into a shawl, and the very pink one into a hat

9  1 Up Blanket 2.5 years in the making in Crochet: Completed Projects by misskohaku on: April 05, 2013 12:20:21 AM
I started this blanket in June 2010 according to ravelry, though I could have sword I had started it that August. At any rate, at the naive age of 17 I thought I could make the thing by October 31 for my boyfriend for our 1st anniversary. Clearly, that didn't happen. I've been working on it off and on, but finally gave a last seaming push this past weekend.
Gave it to my boyfriend on the 2nd. He absolutely adores it! He said it's the perfect warm but still cool blanket when he sleeps.  Grin

Here one of my best friends and I (I'm the one on the right) hold the blanket up because there's no place in my dorm to lay the whole thing out.  Tongue
