3921  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: Retro Lamps on: August 23, 2009 03:26:40 PM
Wrap the shades in fabric. Since you said you tried spray painting them, you might want to layer some plain colored fabric then top it with a patterned fabric, so the paint doesn't show through. They will be darker shades when you turn the lights on, but you won't need to buy new shades. Sometimes when you think the shades are too big, it's not. If you tried anything smaller it wouldn't be right. These things were designed to be together, like siblings.

I'm gonna make it, as soon as I have this kid... Come on! Get out already, Alice!
3923  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Re: Fish purse on: August 23, 2009 03:01:14 PM
Is it functional as well having a great form? It's totally rad, btw. This made me happy today.
3924  COOKING / Dessert / Re: pop tarts :D WITH RECIPE! on: August 23, 2009 02:52:21 PM
Om nom nom nom nom! I need to make these, though they sound like they would be really small. Two things could happen with really small poptarts: 1)they could help us with portion control which we all need to work on or 2)we wouldn't realize how many we're eating and it would have the opposite effect. I'm guessing #2 is more likely. We shall see, though I'm never very good with pastry dough...
3925  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Claimed lamp on: August 23, 2009 09:11:49 AM
I call it my "claimed lamp" because it wasn't really mine to begin with, I claimed it and made it mine.

Here's the story behind my lamp: Going to school in Idaho, I was diagnosed as bipolar (which I now believe was a misdiagnosis). They put me on Zoloft and I didn't like it b/c it made me feel dead and uncreative so instead of weening myself off of it, like I should have, I dropped it all at once and this was what happened:

Like I said, I found the lamp in my apartment and when I asked the apartment managers about it, they said they didn't know where it came from and I was welcome to it. I already had some paint and my previous roommate left some pink and green chiffon-like fabric behind so I went to the store and bought some beads and some copper wire. I stripped the fabric off of the shade and painted it (2 colors) and used the fabric elsewhere (for a photo album). I sewed the chiffon onto the lamp with the copper wire and made it fit by wrapping the lamp with more copper wire:

There are flowers on multiple layers of chiffon, which is one of my favorite things about this lamp:

It's not as nice as it once was, but I made it 5 years ago and since then I have moved 4 times, 2 of which were very long distance, and I now have an almost 3 year old so... Time takes it's toll.

Still one of my favorite creations [next to my kid(s) of course] if only because of what it stands for and what I was going through at the time.

This is also my first real post on Craftster.
3926  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Re: Baby Link: Now with FREE Pattern!!! on: August 16, 2009 08:36:04 PM
This is almost enough to make me want to start knitting... almost.
3927  COOKING / Dessert / Re: Chocolate Chip Bacon Cookies on: August 16, 2009 06:59:53 AM
Chocolate and bacon is becoming all the rage these days, so I've read online. There is even a bakery that makes syrup cupcakes topped with chocolate icing and bacon. Shocked That sounds awesome.

OH! And if you haven't heard of it, you have to try some Bacon Salt Grin, because everything should taste like bacon. It's even Kosher! I found some at the local Albertson's.
3928  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: Blackberry season! Jam and Jam rolls (pic heavy) on: August 16, 2009 06:53:23 AM
mm... Blackberries. We had bushes in Washington but I don't think I've had them fresh since then, 18 years ago. My mom made so much jam from them every year! Thanks for the nostalgia!
3929  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: 7x7ft Raccoon Mario Rug! on: August 14, 2009 04:04:32 PM
This is freakin' awesome. I may steal your idea and make something for my hugely nerdy husband along these lines. (we are nintendo collectors!)
