1  Unicorn Sh*t in Spinning: Completed Projects by jexxican on: August 31, 2015 04:23:29 PM

I've been working on this for over a year.
I started with some local, white alpaca, dyed it with Easter colors,

carded it into fluffy, sparkly batts,

And spun it into thick n' thin yarn!

I made a total of 22 batts, from 1.8 oz to 2.8 oz each.
These 3 are 9oz @ 290 yds, 8.3oz @ 290 yds, and 9oz @ 270 yds.
I have another drying that is 10oz @ 245 yds
and another still on the bobbin, yet to be measured.
I also have 1 batt left that I don't think I will spin on it's own. I guess I will hang onto it.

2  Re: Yarnies Vs Sewists Spring 2015 - Gallery in ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED by jexxican on: April 28, 2015 11:06:50 AM
When I opened my package from Lindy yesterday the first words out of my mouth were "Holy shit!" This is why.

She got me a book! I love books! And I LOVE the cloud/sunshine hoop too. It even has yellow felt on the back.

ISN'T IT GREAT?! TREES! So many trees in my hoopla stash. I really need to stop being a pansy and start bashing holes in my concrete block walls to hang all of this goody-ness.

Wow! So many great things swapped in this swap. Bunny did a great job matching up, eh?

Well i received a few days ago from SmileyYogini and am just not getting around to posting. I still haven't sent. Ugh. Monday for sure! Anywho, here is my lovely package:

Bought goodies. We both love purple and buttons and spinning.

Can't go wrong with including crocheted dishcloths, right?

Heck yeah, mail! Hans stitched cards for the win!

And the best part a tree! So many fun stitches used in this! Isn't it great?! I lurv it! So much! I even went and bought some sticky hooks so maybe, after a year and a half, I can figure out where to hang my hoopla wall.

Here is my hoop! It's a 10" hoop and I'm sure you're all aware of the design's origin.

Close ups!

New to me stitches used: Zigzag coral, coral, interlaced band, split, double chain, heavy chain, cable chain (my favorite!), loop, pearl... I think I got them all.
Not new to me but still used: back, french knots, seed, stem, chain.

5  Merry Christmas Mom! in Quilting: Completed Projects by jexxican on: February 07, 2015 08:54:20 AM
My mom gave me a small box that was her grandmothers. Last fall I finally went through it. Most of it was embroidery patterns from the Work Basket. There were 2 sets of 7 that I'm assuming were made for dishtowels. 1 of those sets was kitties and the other Sunbonnet Sue's. I decided to do the Sue's for mom's cousin, Suzie, and the kitties for Mom. I originally planned on making dishtowels but they are so expensive so instead I scanned them into my computer, traced them on my tablet, and printed them off onto some 8 1/2 inch squares of fabric (ironed onto freezer paper of course) to be use for quilt blocks. This one is mom's. Suzie's hasn't been started yet, other than printing off the pattern.

This is the first time I've ever designed a quilt. Not the blocks, but choosing blocks and laying them out. It was so much fun! That being said, I'm really proud of it so there will be lots of pictures, starting with pretty ones on the wood shed:

I used 4 different free block patterns I found from around the interwebs. This mod pillow was inspiration for one block, this patchwork wheel inspiration for another, I mostly followed the directions for this Refracted block, and totally followed this Xs and Os tute for the last. My graph paper lay out:

I hand quilted it all.

The border around the middle was just chevrons and pinwheels. I like the secondary pattern they created so for the back I made it again using 8 1/2 inch HSTs. Love it!

And the signature block, my personal favorite block:

Finished size: 45x60

I received from our lovely heart filled cowtown. She made one for each of the kids, including a Wolverine (complete with green patchwork cape), a dreadlocked spiderman, and a Hello Kitty. They are going to love these!

Well in that case I'm glad I posted first so I wouldn't feel like I was trying to copy the infamous Lindy. I wanted my colors a little more muted.
August Bell, that looks great! I don't know the reference but it's still funny.
I know I've already earned my entry into this month's giveaway and I'm not aiming for more "entries", but I'm not really making my own posts for a while so I thought I would share these here. I loved stitching letters so much I made these 4 hoops, 3 for the ladies I visit teach at church and the top one for me.

Pattern here, I just left off the year.

Mine went to the sweet side also. I realized today that if I stitch while henpecking my son to do his homework then the henpecking is less violence-threatening.

Pattern and explanation of the Mother T quote here.
Still don't know if I will keep it in the hoop or make like a mini quilt with it.

9  Quilt Block Drive for Sydney Heroes in Crafty Charitable/Social Causes by jexxican on: December 17, 2014 12:51:08 PM

Molli Sparkles live in Sydney, Australia, and was emotionally affected by the terrorist attacks there. He is doing a quilt block drive to make quilts for the families of the 2 fallen. Here is his post on the matter, and here is the tutorial for the specific hashtag blocks he is wanting. If you are stateside and don't want to ship all the way to Australia, Julie from the Intrepid Thread based in CA is willing to ship whatever is sent to her in one big lot to him. Here is her post on it, and you can find her address on the "Contact us" part of her website. Per Julie: "If they are not here by December 31st I won't be able to ship them so I will give them to a charity committee in one of my guilds." so if you want to make some that would be great, but if they don't get to Julie by the end of the year they will still be put to good use.

The photos up top show what I made last night in less than an hour and a half. The tute says to toss the 4th 1 1/2 inch section made, but if you make 3 at a time then you have enough "discarded piece" to make one more. The fourths blocks I made scrappy. I like them!

After all of that img heavy bs I posted and I haven't even stitched anything from it all yet. I was looking for dishtowels to do the Kitties and Sun Bonnet Suzies on but they are expensive at Blobby Blobby and I don't know where else to look for them. Any ideas?

I did, however, go through the big box more and find some stencils. This is the one I chose to use for a stitchery design instead of a a crayon tinting design, like the package told me to. Way old school Crayola propaganda going on.

It's going to be used as the center of a quilted pillow for my Aunt for Christmas, but it still looks good in a hoop, doncha think?
