1  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Blocking Fabric. Help! on: December 03, 2006 08:18:10 PM
I have decided I want to learn to sew. So I bought Sew U by Wendy Mullin and she suggests that you block it. For my first project I chose to make pajama bottoms, but to get practice I was going to start with a muslin version first. I have not washed the muslin but then she talks about ripping or threading, so I went to try it and it didn't work. I did get it to rip but it made the edges kind of ruffle. Then I tried the threading method and the thread would break after about and inch or so. Do you have an suggestions or is this a necessary step? This is probably just a newbie question but I could use all the help and suggestions on anything about first projects.

This is my first Fiber Friday! Yay! I just started spinning again and hooked! So here is mine(the pic is when it was still on the spindle, but it's finished now and ready to be rewound into a skein):

8  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / First Dyed Rovings on: February 24, 2006 08:15:43 PM
I dyed these rovings this morning with Wilton's Cake Dyes. This is the first time I have dyed rovings although I did try dyeing yarn a couple of months ago.

The two together:

This is the roving I'm spinning right now.

I think I may have felted the rovings (I've never tried to felt before, so I'm not sure what it looks like)

The roving turned out kind of fuzzy and flat in color, but when I have ordered rioving before it's been shiny. Does soaking it in a woolwash make it shiny and smooth again? Any suggestions?

Wow you have very beautiful yarns! And you spin all of them on a drop spindle? How many yards do you think you average?

I am also interested in hand dyeing and don't want to buy a steamer. But your comment about Alton Brown cracked me up!
