I have my small crafts done, which I am itching to tell me partner about and ruin the surprise!
I also have a plan for the big craft as well as the supplies. Now to find time!
Which if anyone wants to craft for me (time that is), I would be thrilled!
27  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: braided rug from clothing swap rejects on: February 04, 2008 12:05:48 PM
i braided many super long braids and then sewed them together at the end.

also, ruby-soho, that book is my favourite too! also, nikki mcclure is probably my favourite living artist.

To make it, I cut more or less one inch strips of fabric, braided them into a long stand, sewed the ends in and the sewed it into a spiral. I am positive there is a more energy efficient way of doing this, but i had an idea of how I wanted it to look exactly and went with that. I had never done anything like this before and just sort of went for it.
It is very comfy to step on, but I put so much work into it, I have no desire to see it get mucked up. Instead it leads a re-purposed life as decoration, cushion. neck massager.

I completed this back in the fall, but hadn't posted. the story goes as follows:
i hosted a clothing swap at my place and about twenty friends came with ridiculous amounts of swapable stuff. at the end of the night though, i was still left with at least 4 garbage bags of stuff no one wanted. i salvaged some for crafting and brought the rest to goodwill.

for this rug i cut up t-shirts, a long skirt from a friends trip to Central Africa and a pair of pajama pants.
then i braided it together and sewed it in place. while its the right size for a bath mat, i can't bear the thought of stepping on it, so it decorates the back of my comfy chair.
