21  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Circular Ear Bud Carrier w/ Tutorial! on: September 30, 2012 01:31:14 PM
Believe it or not, this time last year, I was still a zipper virgin! For some odd reason, setting a zipper intimidated the heck out of me, but NO MORE!

I thought I would share my latest creation in the hopes that those of You who want an easy project to play with a zipper.  Cheesy

Circular Ear Bud Carrier

Items Needed

2 complimentary fabrics - less than half of a fat quarter of each
1 zipper - at least 3-4" longer than the project
fusible interfacing - I used heavy weight but a medium weight would work just as well.
1 D ring - a key chain ring would also work for this
matching thread

Pattern is attached below!

1. Cut out fabric and interfacing pieces as stated on the pattern.

2. Fuse the interfacing to the exterior fabric according to the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Iron the tab piece in half lengthwise.

4. Fold one of the long edges down to meet the previously ironed edge and iron that. Do the same on the other side.

5. Stitch down both sides at a 1/8" seam allowance.

6. Sandwich the zipper between one half circle of exterior (with fused side on the outside) and lining fabric in the middle of the length of the zipper. (Do Not Unzip the Zipper!) Stitch this down.

7. Pull the exterior fabric and the lining the other direction. Iron flat.

8. Sandwich the other side of the zipper with the fabrics. Make sure that your pretty exterior fabric is on the right side. Also, make sure the outside edges are in line with the set that you just sewed down.

9. Iron down these pieces just as you did in Step 7. Then, top stitch along the zipper.

10. Fold your sewn tab piece in half and insert your D ring.

11. Pin folded tab into place in line with the end of the zipper. (If the zipper is pulled shut, the tab should be at the opposite end.) Yes, the tab is longer than needed. The longer length is easier to work with than shorter. You can adjust the length shorter if you wish. I just trim the excess after I've sewn it down.

12. Pull the zipper down to the middle of the circle.

13. Now, layer the full circle exterior fabric face down on top, followed with the lining. (Lining should be face up if it is patterned!) Pin around the circle. I like to pin very close to the zipper and tab so that they cannot shift as I sew.

14. Sew around the circle. I like to go back over both the tab and the zipper several times to make sure that they are secure. When you're finished stitching, trim the excess zipper and tab.

If you have never sewn a circle, go slowly so that you can make a smooth circle. If you go too fast, your circle comes out more octogonish! Wink

15. Zig zag around the circle to secure all of the edges.

16. You can clip along the edge if you wish to make sure you get a good turned edge. Some people think this isn't necessary. If you do clip, I wouldn't clip the zipper or tab and I'd space the clips about 1/2" apart.

17. Turn the pouch right side out. Be careful of the pin holding the D ring down!
You can use a closed pair of scissors to push all of the edges out if you want.

18. Top stitch around the circle and you're done!

If you give this project a go, I'd love to see your creations! Cheesy

22  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / October 2012 Birthday Swap! on: September 23, 2012 06:41:49 AM
Who's interested in the October Birthday swap???  Cheesy

I'll open it up on Oct. 1. If you're interested, get to working on your birthday wishlist!

23  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Halfway Homemade: Warm Chicken and Couscous salad on: September 22, 2012 03:15:09 PM
I'm always looking for ways to get my 2 kidlets to try new foods, especially veggies. I created this halfway homemade dish tonight and it was a success!

Warm Chicken and Couscous Salad

1 box Toasted Pine Nut couscous (the Roasted Garlic and Olive Oil would be great too!)
2 cups cooked chicken (I used left over roast chicken.)
1/2 can garbanzo beans
2 small zucchini, cut into bite size chunks (new veggie!)
1/2 onion, diced
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
1-2 tablespoons olive oil
1-2 teaspoons oregano
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Make couscous according to the package's directions. Set aside.

In a large sauce pot, sautee onion in olive oil over medium  until almost translucent. Add zucchini and cook until about halfway translucent and then garbanzos and chicken go in the pot with the garlic, oregano, coriander, and black pepper. Allow to warm through.

Stir in couscous, cover and allow the herbs to flavor everything with the residual steam.

Soooo yummy!

You could totally do this with real couscous and flavor it as you wish. I was just using what I had on hand. You could add cherry tomatoes, spinach or even frozen veggies in a pinch. Use whatever works for you!

Also any meat would work. I normally have my grilling husband to cook up an extra chicken breast or two for this sort of meal.

24  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 78 ENTRIES / My Back to School Breakfast Incentive! on: September 07, 2012 08:47:18 PM
I'm guilty of something. Like many of us, I rarely ever make something for myself, but this time around is different!

I am a high school teacher and a mother of two elementary age children. My mornings are normally hectic and loud. I fix breakfast for my little ones every morning but I tend to forget to do so for myself which can lead to all kinds of bad drive thru habits. This year, I decided this needed to change! I am going to carry my breakfast to work with me so that I can eat in peace. Smiley

To help me along, I decided I needed a spiffy carrier so here's my creation...my breakfast bag! (Can't very well call it a lunch bag because that's is not its purpose!)

I took this boxy pouch tutorial and made my own modifications. I increased the dimensions of the original pattern from 8" x 6" to 12" x 10". I added a layer of Insulbright between the exterior fabric and the lining. I also added handles.

To make this bag, I repurposed an old pair of denim capris that had some machine embroidery along the bottom. I used the embroidered edges to create some pretty little pockets on both sides.

My breakfast bag easily fits one of those rectangular gladware containers and I could add some cut up fruit as well. I'm so excited to try my new bag out next week! Cheesy

25  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Sourdough Friendship Bread Starter? on: September 02, 2012 01:27:24 PM
Does anyone have a really good sour dough friendship bread starter recipe?

My husband has lost his mind this weekend and wants to give this a try.

I'm thinking I'm going to need to contact Jenny Craig if he is serious about this. Wink
26  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Mermaid Doll on: September 02, 2012 11:24:13 AM
I made my first mermaid doll for texscrapper in OHLS. I'm so very happy with the way she turned out and I hope texscrapper's nap will as well. Smiley

Welcome to the Ongoing Holiday Gift List Swap! Round 6

We know it's early, but it's never too soon to start thinking of holiday gifts!  This the place to help your fellow Craftster narrow down their holiday gift lists.  This swap welcomes every winter holiday including Christmas, Hanukah/Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, etc.  If you want a handmade holiday for your friends and family, this is the place to get help on your list.  From grandma to your own kids, your lists can include almost anyone in your life that you might need a little help crafting for - even yourself!.   Please read through this initial post carefully before joining and PM me with any questions.

How it works:

This swap will work in an ongoing format.  The first person in the swap will post a list of handmade items that they would like.  The participants then look through the list and if they can fulfill that particular wish, they claim that person for that item and post their own list for the next person to claim them.  This works like a chain.  Person A is claimed by Person B, Person B is claimed by Person C, etc.  You must claim to be claimed and only one person can claim another at a time.

Each FOC can have up to 3 outstanding claims at a time.  A non-FOC craftster gets two claims at a time.  A new swapper can have 1 claim at a time.  Once one of your claim is received and the organizer is notified, you may claim again.

What is on the list:

Each participant can post as many size medium requests as they would like in their list.  Please try to post a minimum of 10 items you would like so there is a variety and a better chance of not stalling the swap.  You may post larges or smalls as well, but please realize that to fulfill the swap requirements, you are only required to claim and send a medium.  This swap will be for handmade items only.  Organizing your list by crafting medium is a good idea to help other participants find something on your list that they are good at, but is not required.  Please note that because these are holiday wishes we are filling, items should be your absolute best quality.

How to make your list:

Please format your list to have an introduction that lets us know a little more about you, such as your name, your general location, etc.  Please format your wishes so that each participant has a clear idea as to what you are looking for.  Posting links is highly advisable.  It is also a great idea to provide participants with as much relevant information on the gift recipient as possible.  Here is my suggested way for formatting each wish:

<item> <recipient> <preferences> <link>

Doll dress for my daughter.  She prefers pink floral fabric with a velcro or button closure.  Here is one she likes http://URL GOES HERE
Allergies:  Smoke

Including allergies right underneath of each wish keeps the allergies in focus.  This is such an important part to consider when claiming someone.  If you format your wishes like this, they will be clear and you are more likely to be claimed quickly.

Making a claim:

Once you make a claim, you must PM the participant that you are claiming for their address and to discuss the item you have claimed to make for them.  Once you make a claim, you are committed to making that item.  Remember, you only have two weeks to complete the item and ship it.  If you choose to send extras, they do not contribute to the size of the claim.  A medium is technically either between 2-3 hours in time, or $20-$30 in supplies/value.  To claim the person who is currently available, respond to their post with I claim <username> for <item claimed for>.  For example, if I were to claim myself to make socks, I would write, I claim kaz814 for a hoopla.  Within that same response, you then post your own list so someone can claim you.

Send Outs:

Just like other ongoing swaps, you will have two weeks from the date of your claim to send out your item.  There are no exceptions.  DC#s will be absolutely required.  If you do not provide a DC#, it will be noted in your feedback.  If you do not provide a DC# and your package gets lost, you will be required to resend.  You must PM the organizers with the DC#/customs# when you send!

Qualifications to Join:

Anyone is free to join under standard Craftster Swap Guidelines.  Due to the time constraints on claims, I reserve the right to deny any Craftster that has a history of lateness.

Receiving packages:

Please PM me as soon as you receive each package.  This is so I can keep track of claims.  Pictures in the gallery are also appreciated.  Some of your fulfilled wishes might inspire other wishes for other participants.

Other important info:

You do not have to message me when you claim a person.  You only have to message them for their address.  Please PM me however when you send your questionnaire, when you send your claim, and when you receive a claim with the title: OHLS 5: questionnaire, OHLS 5: sent!, etc.  Also, Please PM me with any questions you have.

Please do not claim a person until you have been approved for this swap and it is listed in your profile!  Please do not claim a person once one of your claims has been received until the person receiving from you verifies your package arrived and is exactly what you claimed them for. (Unless you have open claim spots, of course!)

Sometimes, a person's list will stall the swap.  When your list has been up for more than 18-24 hours without someone claiming you, please try to add more items to your list so you have a better chance of being claimed.  Remember that it is possible that not all of your items will be claimed.

There will be a discussion/gallery thread in the Gallery area.  This is an area to give us updates and discuss this swap.

At the end of the month, whoever is the last on the list will be first on the list for the following month/or the organizer (me!) will be the ending claimer.  You will have to sign up for each additional round that you choose to participate in.  You must be current in the previous round to be accepted to the new round.

This swap is open to international swappers, as well as new swappers.

I reserve the right to deny participation to anyone who is late in previous rounds of this swap.  This is a holiday swap and should be fun!

If you want to participate, here is the information to send to the organizer.  Please have the title of your PM be the name of the swap.

Details of swap:
This swap was organized so everyone can get something crafty for their birthday!  Please read the guidelines carefully.

**You have ONE WEEK after being approved for this swap in which to make your first claim!**

1. This swap is list style, like the Ongoing Wishlist Swap.  However, it is NOT chain style. You can choose any birthday Craftsters list that is posted, rather than only being able to pick from the last one posted like in the OWS.

2. This is a medium item swap. A medium item is defined as a craft or recon, etc that takes you two hours to complete OR $20 worth of store bought items. (If bought from a thrift store, estimate what it would have cost new.) However, you may also substitute a few small items for a medium.

3. If your birthday is in swap's current month, you can post your birthday wish list for this month. To do that, you must first PM me with the swap questionnaire filled out and wait for approval. While you're waiting, be sure to post in the discussion/gallery thread: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=413679.0

4. Once you have been approved, you may post your list of things that you would like to receive. This is the format for your lists: First post your location and a short bio of yourself, then a list of crafted items you would like, then craft supplies (if any) and lastly you can put a few extras that arent crafted, things like candy or tea. Remember, the more items on your list, the more likely you are to be chosen. The minimum of items to post is five.  Also including your wists, etsy favorites, etc. is a good way for people to get the idea of your likes and style.  If you have any allergies please type them in red in your bio section. Please see "Tips to Creating a Good List" below.

5. Please post lists only in this thread. Discussion can be done here in the combined discussion/gallery thread: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=413679.0   Please be sure to post here so that you can be part of the discussion and receive. You will not be approved until you have posted in the discussion thread.

 6. Every birthday participant must make at least one claim. You may have up to two claims at a time, unless you are an FOC or a first time swapper, and then you can claim again once your items are received (not when you mail out). New swappers may only have one outstanding claim; they may claim again after their first claim is received. FOC's may have 3 outstanding claims at a time. Claims need to be made from the "crafted" and "craft supplies" sections of a person's list. The "extras" are just that--extra items you may want to throw in if you are feeling generous, but claims cannot be solely extras. Keep it crafty :-) (I'm asking that if you are sending mostly supplies, that you craft a little something for the bday babe, even if it's a handmade card.)

7. You may get claimed more than once, but your minimum amount to claim is one.  It is possible you may not get claimed at all. In this case you will not be provided a swap angel; angels are only if you get flaked on. However I do my best to make sure everyone gets claimed by keeping track of how many times each person is claimed. If possible try to pick someone who has been claimed 0 times versus someone who has been claimed 3 times.

8. If it is not your birthday but you would like to send a birthday present out you may do so.  Fill out the non-birthday swapper questionnaire and send it to me for approval.  Birthday swappers who receive a present from a non-birthday swapper must send a snail mail thank you card.  You will not receive feedback until I hear from the other swapper that they have received a thank you card.

9. When you choose to fulfill a birthday wish, PM both the organizer AND the chosen Craftster.  At that time, please request the address from the receiver for where to send it.  After that, you have 2 weeks to get the item out the door.

10. It is super important for everyone to keep good communication.  It is REQUIRED that you PM me when you've sent and of course, don't forget the DC#.  It is REQUIRED that when you receive, you PM me and publicly announce in the gallery (even if you don't have pictures).  If you do not send the appropriate PMs, you will receive poor communication feedback.

11. When one of your items is chosen, please cross it out so that it is easier for others to see what has been chosen. (It wouldn't hurt to thank the person at this time either.)

12. If you are sending late you must PM TroubleT by your send-out date.  If your send-out date comes and goes and you dont PM me, you will receive poor communication feedback.  It should not be my job to hunt you down and find out what is going on.

13. If you are flaked on in this swap you will receive an angel, but only in the amount of packages to which you also sent out. For instance, if you send out 2 packages, and are claimed for 3 packages but are flaked on once, you will not receive an angel because you already received 2 packages, which is equal to what you sent. If you send 1 package and are claimed for 1 package and you are flaked on, you will receive 1 angel.

Please make sure to put "Sept. Birthday Swap or something equivalent in the subject line on all communications. The most important thing to me is communication. Please PM me (TroubleT) when you send and receive, and please reply to my PM's to you in a timely manner.

If you format your PMs like this:
Format for PMs:
Proper label:
"Sept. Bday Swap" and either "Sign-up," "Claim," "Sent," "Received," or "Question"

When sending sent and received PMs include the send-by date, listed in the second post of the main thread, your user name, their user name and the item. Just copy and past the info from the second post if you want!:

Send by Sept. 14
kaz814 to TroubleT -- pretty purse

Outstanding claims allowed:
FOCs: 3 at a time
First time swappers: 1 at a time
Everyone else: 2 at a time

Become an FOC~

It seems that every month there is someone whose list languishes for a while. I want everyone to get picked so here are some tips for a well-round list:

--Make sure your items are actually mediums and smalls. Quilts are not mediums. Large painted portraits are not mediums. Hand knit sweaters are not mediums. This isnt to say that you cant have any large items on your list (some generous soul may have the time and the inclination to choose one of those!), but the majority of the list should be smaller items

--Listing A surprise plus a well filled out Craftster profile and a link to your wists (with a decent amount of items on it) is always helpful in getting chosen

--Make sure to post a variety of crafting techniques. If you list appliqud t-shirts in five various themes and count that as your required five items, that is more like one item for someone to choose, not five. Having various crafting methods (sewn, knit, crocheted, paper crafted, jewelry, etc.) is going to make it easier for people to choose you.

--Check out other lists in past Bday swaps and the Ongoing Wishlist Swap for ideas for things you never knew you wanted!
