1  Help With These Ruffles? I just can't think of a good way to do them. (pics!) in Clothing: Discussion and Questions by sychosydney on: August 20, 2009 09:55:09 PM
So, I'm going to do this really cool jacket based on a lolita dress (kind of as a first project Tongue Its the first clothing-item i've ever done, not including repairs. ) The whole thing reminds me of a tailcoat. The back is going to be embellished with three layers of ruffles (like, one long one on the bottom, a slightly shorter one on top of it, and then another shorter on on the top of that), and I'm haing trouble coming up with a way to do the ruffles, which I want to be longer in the middle, with it getting increasingly longer until the bottom layer is like a very rounded point. I have NO idea on how to do this! I came up with one idea that MAY work, but i want your opinions, too!!

Just for fun, here is a pic of the dress:

Okay, so this is how I want the ruffles to look (really bad drawing!!):

Oh, and each ruffle is going to be edged at the bottom with lace. Very fun.

So, this is my idea! (Also shown with a terrible drawing done in paint! Tongue)

I thought it might be kinda hard to sew the lace on when the cut of the fabric is sort pointed, though?  What do you guys think? And do you have any better ideas??
Thanks! Tongue

2  Corset/bustier with a sweetheart neckline? in Clothing: Discussion and Questions by sychosydney on: July 30, 2009 02:44:54 PM
EDIT: I've figured it out, thanks!

So, I'm doing all my preliminerary (i'm 98% certain I spelled that wrong!) research before I start making this dress for my eighth grade formal next year. I have found only one thing- corsets/bustiers with sweetheart necklines? How tos or patterns just don't exist. GRR!!!! I have never made a corset before, or even boned anyhing before, and am completley hopeless. Here are some pictures of the dress I'm copying-

So, its not really a corset, but it it is boned and sweetheart necklined, and totally perfect? Any helpful tips or suggestions? Or magically appearing tutorials?? Ahh! I'm so hopeless at the moment!  Huh

Oh, heres this great corset I found that is sort of like I want, only without the hook and eye closure in front (I want mine to have just lacing up the  back)

3  Help on fabrics for a dress I'm making?? Please? in Clothing: Discussion and Questions by sychosydney on: July 28, 2009 10:28:52 PM
I'm sorta new to sewing, so I'm not very knowledgeable in all things fabric. Smiley I was doing some online window shopping the other day for a dress for my eighth grade formal this year (yes I know I'm early) and found this GORGEOUS one on etsy...only problem is its 225.00 and has this accent I hate, and won't fit me...Sad So I decided...I'd make one! I was studying it and making sketches tonight, and came across a little speedbump...what fabric would I use for the bodice?? It says on the listing that she used "heirloom cotton", but I've never heard of, nor seen said kind of cotton, and searches on Google weren't very helpful. I know of course to use tulle for the skirt, but the bodice is killing me. ANy ideas? Also, I'm going to bone it...do you think plastic or steel bones? I might just go with what I can find cheap, haha. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Heres the dress:

And the URL to the etsy listing:

4  Re: A question about a dress.. now with pictures. in Designer Clothing Homage by sychosydney on: July 24, 2009 01:55:43 PM
I just found this thread, and as I am going to recreate the helena dress fro my eighth grade formal, I thought I'd post some snapshots/drawings of the dress. None of the drawings are my own, but rather they are all pics I have collected from various internet searches, and pictures my friends sent me. Smiley Enjoy!
