1  Vertical vs. Horizontal Grainline--much difference? Problem with pattern in Clothing: Discussion and Questions by tignor on: October 07, 2006 01:16:05 PM
OK, so I'm a bit miffed. I'm cutting out my fabric for McCalls 4306, view D, and 2 of my bottom 3 strips I don't have enough fabric. I check and re-check that I'm cutting for the right size, the right fabric/pattern layout for my size, and I bought what the pattern called for.

This is a bias cut skirt so the grainline arrow makes the pattern pieces lay diagonally on the fabric. Each strip has 2 pieces. See scan of the instruction page:

So, I fume a bit but then I just cut 2 of each piece, fabric laying right side up. My question is, and yeah I'm going to do it because I've cut already, is will it make much difference? I have cut the 2 pieces with the grainline horizontal on the page, when the instructions have one horizontal and one vertical.

3  I need help with these pleats, please! in Clothing: Discussion and Questions by tignor on: September 03, 2006 05:47:16 AM
Hi, everyone. This is the first time I've sewn pleats, and funny, but it's a "easy" McCalls pattern! And I'm confused.

Here are 2 pictures of the front of the pattern for view C, which is what I'm making:

And I scanned the pattern pleat lines, pictures in 2 parts. First pic is the top of the blouse's pleat, second pic is the bottom of the pleat (the middle of the pleat is just the straight dotted lines:

and the instructions which is what is confusing to me:

OK, I've basted the top and bottoms of the pleats BUT it says "Top-Stitch along the dotted lines on front" and "remove basting between circles"

To me, top-stitching is decorative and on the front, but do they mean "stitch down the blouse on the dotted lines through both thickennesses" and when it says "remove basting between circles does that mean, if I did stitch down the blouse, to remove the middle of the stitching? AND what is with this extra corner piece (shown in pattern scan at the bottom of the blouse and in the shaded in picture in the pattern instructions). Do I sew that through both thickennesses? I'm really confused about that part. It is only printed on one side of the pleat line.

I'm also confused about the top of the pleat, see on the pattern there is a wavy line that says "pleat" next to it.

Thanks for your help everyone!
