1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Need gift ideas for stepmother and stepsister on: December 04, 2011 09:16:22 PM
Christmas is just around the corner, and as usual I'm stumped on gifts for my stepmother and stepsister. Somehow I've managed to know these women for eleven years without actually learning anything personal about them, so choosing gifts is always difficult. We aren't close, but we get along and I feel bad giving them boring, generic gifts, so I'm hoping someone here will have a brilliant suggestion and save me from the horror of last-minute Christmas shopping.

Info on stepmom:
She doesn't cook, read, craft, or garden.
Her only hobbies are getting her nails done and watching trashy reality TV.
She loves to shop, gossip, and drink margaritas.

Info on stepsis:
Ditto stepmom
Nursing student

And that's it, I'm afraid. That's absolutely all I know about them. I hate that this makes them sound like shallow couch potatoes, but they honestly don't have any hobbies that don't involve the Kardashians or trying on shoes. Well, Craftster? Is there any hope for finding a nice, thoughtful gift? Or am I doomed to another Christmas of gift baskets from Bath & Body Works?
2  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Dr. Who Scarf on: June 14, 2010 08:51:28 AM
This is the first completed project I've posted here, and what better way to start off than by posting my 4th Doctor Scarf of (Quite Cuddly) Death?

All told it's about twenty feet long, and took nine weeks and two days to complete. The yarn is mostly Vanna's Choice acrylic, but there's also some Patons wool and even some plain old Red Heart acrylic in there. Finding all the right colors was the hardest part of this project, and I'm still not totally happy with a few of my color choices, but I think it turned out great regardless. The scarf is knit entirely in garter stitch, and a whopping 71,576 stitches went into this beast.

Pictures:

Nice face, huh? Sorry about the quality; it's hard taking pictures of yourself. In this picture I have it wrapped twice around my neck, and it still trails the ground on both sides. (Fun Fact: I am 4'10". This scarf is more than four times my height.)

Hanging up in my kitchen. (Please ignore the mess; I live with pigs.)
3  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Old dishwasher on: July 24, 2009 05:04:15 PM
What can I do with a dishwasher? I thought about taking the racks out and using them to store/organize things or cutting them up and using the wire for projects, but that's all I've come up with so far. Any ideas?
4  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Introduce Yourself / Long time lurker finally joined! on: July 20, 2009 04:16:52 PM
Hi Craftster! I'm your secret admirer! I've finally gathered the courage to sign up and start posting here, and I feel absolutely honored to join the ranks of the crafty ladies and gentlemen I've admired for so long.

A little about me: I'm 20 years old, I live in Mississippi, and I love to read. I hope to one day publish a book of my own, and when I'm not working on one of my manuscripts I like to sew, crochet, sculpt, and paint. I studied theater at university for a little while, and I LOVE making costumes and building props.

I look forward to making lots of crafty friends here!
5  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Need help with spiral on: July 16, 2009 05:06:26 PM
Hi Craftster! Long time lurker, first time poster here with a question.

I got it into my head to make a black and white swirled rug, so I stitched up two long rows of crochet in black and white and started stitching them into a circle. After just a few minutes I realized that instead of a nice flat circle it was forming a tube. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Any advice (or different methods of making a spiral shape) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
