1  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Victorian Crazy Quilts on: June 21, 2012 09:31:20 AM
Has anyone ever made a crazy quilt? I am really interested in them and since I have a ton of scraps figured that would be a good first quilt project.

I realize this is quite a quilt to start with, but I'm going to take it slowly and might skip (or machine stitch) some of the embroidery.

Any tips, advice, or thoughts would be welcomed as I embark on this adventure.
2  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Treadle skipping stitches on: June 15, 2012 04:59:49 AM
I sew with a 1926 Singer treadle, and it usually does a beautiful stitch. However, recently it started skipping stitches about every inch or less. It started after I was working with some heavy material, during which I adjusted the foot pressure (which I usually don't mess with) and did have a needle hit the metal plate and dull the tip.

I have tried a few different needles (different sizes, all looked pretty sharp), cleaned the bobbin case well, oiled the machine, and everything is threaded right.

Is there something I am overlooking?? I just wanna sew again!
3  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Crafty Business Discussion / Going Retail on: May 29, 2012 04:50:36 PM
Can anyone give me advice on how I should go about taking my items to a brick and mortar store? I have never done this but am interested in selling most of my work through some local store instead of just online.

Specifically I'm not sure who to ask or how to approach them. Also, I would like to hear what kind of personal experience you have had working with retail stores.

4  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Ideas Websites? on: September 22, 2011 07:11:53 PM
Someone told me something about a website which is a virtual corkboard and you can see other boards with similar ideas, or something like that. Does anyone know a website like this? It would be a good source for inspiration and creativity.
5  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Other Image Reproduction Techniques: Discussion and Questions / Old tires for block prints? on: July 19, 2011 06:42:34 AM
I'm new the the printmaking world and am really interested in relief, but have very little money to buy materials, so I was wondering if it works to carve into old tire pieces, anyone tried this?
Also, I have some chisels, ink and plate, but what can I use for a roller?
6  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Making dinner and keeping cool on: July 06, 2011 10:23:25 AM
It's been kinda hot lately, which makes me not want to turn on the oven, and some times I don't even want to attempt to cook dinner. Give me some suggestions of what to make for dinner. What are your summertime favorites? What things are good at avoiding the oven and/or are refreshing on a hot day?
7  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Making Patterns on: June 30, 2011 09:31:02 AM
Hi. I'm new here, so if this has already been done, please redirect me.

I have an idea for a wonderful collared, buttoned shirt, but rummaging through my box of patterns I couldn't find anything that was quite right. So, instead of spending money on a new pattern, I want to make my own, which I have never done.

I was thinking of using an old shirt as a template and drawing something out on newspaper, suggestions?? Does anyone else make their own patterns?
