21  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / PC costumes that won't make our kids cry? on: September 25, 2006 05:31:01 PM
We are packing for a move, so my crafting time is very limited, but I cannot buy a costume for various reasons.  Our children go to a school where they are so limited it is nearly impossible to find a costume.

No blood, no weapons, no masks, no bare midriffs and no makeup!

So far the only ideas I've come up with were things like a tornado or alice in wonderland sticking out of a (box) house

wigs are ok, but without makeup or masks even things like clowns are out.

My daughter is only 8, but she wears small to medium women's clothing, so ready made kids costumes won't work, and the same costumes in adult sizes are waaaaaaaaay too skanky for me to allow her to leave the house.  My son can go as a jester without any makeup, but so far she has not liked any of the ideas we've given her.

any ideas?

22  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / How do I do this? on: May 04, 2006 10:16:54 AM
I have no idea why I have never gone to a cake decorating class....

Can anyone look at these links and tell me how to frost cupcakes like this?  I am sure it requires a pastry bag, but what tip, and would I just hold it over the center and move up (like soft serve ice cream) or swirl it somehow?

23  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / tell me about your serger on: March 16, 2006 09:17:38 AM
I searched and the last serger thread was from 2004, sooooo....

can anyone tell me which sergers to avoid?  I am searching for a fairly cheap one, and would like to know if there are any that just plain suck, or any that are really great.
24  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / yummy breakfast rolls...help! on: March 04, 2006 02:23:35 PM
Does anyone know how to make rolls ahead of time and refrigerate them?  I know it stops or slows down the rising, but how far ahead of time do you take them out of the fridge before baking?

I'm trying to make cinnamon rolls and orange rolls ahead of time so we can have them on weekday mornings.

Also, there was a Phillapino bakery in a nearby town that made something they called 'senorita bread.'  These were just a sweet dough formed in a tube shape with cinnamon sugar rolled up inside.  Not too sweet, but delicious.  Anyway, the store closed and we have a serious jones for these!  anyone heard of them?
25  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / stick on bra help on: March 01, 2006 11:08:06 AM
I know there is a way to fake a stick on bra with tape, but what kind of tape?

I bought some stick on bras that wrinkle like crazy, they're workable, but no better than they seem to work, why not use something cheaper?

any ideas?

26  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Discussion and Questions / easter toys? on: February 24, 2006 10:10:11 PM
any ideas for quick and easy easter toys for baskets?  we already stuff eggs with tiny bottles of soap bubbles, and quarters, to avoid giving the kids a completely candy filled basket...but the toys available are so expensive and poorly made, I can't help but think someone here has better ideas!

help!

27  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / finger protectors on: February 11, 2006 06:19:05 PM
somewhere, a couple of years ago, I found these little finger thimbles made of silicone with a padded part for the pad of your finger...they were great for avoiding 'flame thrower' injuries when using the glue gun.

anyone seen these anywhere?  I can't find them now.

28  COOKING / Dessert / Birthday Bug Cakes!!! on: February 01, 2006 03:53:34 PM
So thanks to all my craftster buds, I was able to make butterlies, snails and centipedes for my daughter's birthday, and spiders for my son's birthday.  They were a huge hit, tho most of the kids threw the black licorice pieces away..ick.

29  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Bad Girl project on: January 21, 2006 11:33:10 AM
I'm working on a collage of bad girls, and i'm trying to think of some famous 'bad girls' to use.

Mae West, Cher....and some of those old time detective mag pictures or pinups are the only ideas I have so far.

Belle Starr, maybe.

Anyone have any ideas?
30  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / soldering help? what is neutralizer? on: January 15, 2006 09:02:04 PM
I found detailed soldering directions for the microscope slide pendants, but the last step says to neutralize the soldered area so it doesn't corrode.

Um....how?   What is the neutralizing solution, and how do I get it?

And....wouldn't you have to wait until it cooled so you didn't crack the glass by putting the pendant in liiquid?
