21  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / Re: Belly Dance Bra-a work in progress on: February 14, 2013 08:12:08 PM
looks great! I need to make a new coin bra, mine is disintegrating. Sad Sweat is not kind to fabric. Gross but true. I just have a hard time finding a base that I like. Did you stiffen the cups? Is it going to be a halter strap?

Thank you everyone!

Thanks everyone!
Hey that galapagos yarn matches my costume...I've been hooked on teals and greens lately. I can't seem to escape it, it's almost embarrassing when I pack for a weekend. My clothes, jammies, embroidery projects...Even my underwear and socks have it. Now my costuming too. LOL

I'm in the middle of a painting for my daughter's bedroom, three squirrels having a tea party. I keep wanting to paint but it's either late and I'm exhausted, or my son is driving me up a wall with cabin fever. I can usually set him up to paint at his easel next to me, but he doesn't want to paint as long as me and ends up getting into my box of thread or dumping out the fabric bin. He's going to grandma's tomorrow, so maybe I can paint while the baby naps.

Here's a link to my new dance costuming!

My dance partner and I found this awesome printed fabric at Joann's, and got inspired to make our new costumes based on it. It's a 50"wide drapey silky material that we turned into some big luxurious pantaloons. We used this pattern for the pants:
And the tops we adapted from the Fat Chance Bellydance original choli pattern. We used the cup and triangle gussets (we're busty gals) and added super long ties, a band at the bottom with D-rings. The top crosses at mid back, threads through the d rings and ties. Then we both chose a vintage brooch, I used one from my grandma, the rhinestone fan. She used one from her mother, it was a cameo style oval piece with flowers on it. We both attached matching kuchi pendants beneath that.

The whole look was based around the pattern of the pants and these feathers I got a few years ago, and never turned into hair fascinators. I made a matching pair for us. The base is a stiff felt oval glued to a barrette. Then I used a combination of hot glue and epoxy to add the feathers, more vintage brooches, turkoman buttons, pearly and rhinestone beads.
Here's my feather:

Here's my partner wearing hers:

And here is me wearing mine:

This is how everything looked pulled together...this is me backstage with my ancient phone...getting a smartphone next week, wooho!

Hanging out after we performed:

And link to the performance! We were in Buffalo, NY at the Forum for Jim Boz's new cd release party. It was a blast.

Thanks for looking!

Whew, ok so now that I caught up with everyone's posts....so many lovely yarny things, now I want to knit again.

I have a dance performance tomorrow, so instead of wearing the same ol' stuff, I've been working on a new costume. I made a new halter top, a huge feather fascinator, and a pair of pantaloons. I haven't made any new costuming in quite a while, so I'm excited to have something different tomorrow! Once I'm all dolled up I'll post pictures. Smiley

Yikes, I haven't checked in here and I am way behind on the conversations!
How about rubber tires?  They are free and when I was researching for growing potatoes, they do not leach and harm the veggies or the soil...you can get them pretty much free at a tire place...I got about 10 of them for growing plants, but if you sort of dug them into the terraces, they would hold back your soil...
I think that's an awesome idea, and something you could really get creative with. People already make tire planters, where you cut open and flare out the top and paint them, etc. You could paint them and stack them into a retaining wall, fill them with soil and plants, or you could make a stepped terrace out of them. I think painting them all funky would be so fun! I just did a quick search and found an awesome tutorial to make something like that.

28  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Re: A family of affirmation pillows!! on: January 31, 2013 07:17:14 AM
These are beautiful, such a nice idea. I would love to see these as a project at a women's shelter or something.

OMG I am so in. I actually made a list privately over the holidays for this exact reason, and said I need to stop making stuff to sell, gift, or swap. I've finally resolved to keeping ONE of my items that I make for sale, but I have the same problem, not much here to show for myself or things to enjoy at home. My husband makes the same comments, lol!
I wanted to do the 50 things but that craftalong is SO huge, and overwhelming, I tried it once and never got very far. This is much more doable and I like that it's a smaller crowd.

Here we go....
Green= work in progress
Blue= complete

1. New coin bra for bellydancing
2. Ghawazee coat or Turkish vest for dance (I've been phobic of that pattern and I need to just do it)
3. Wall art for Molly's room (Painting of squirrel tea party!)
4. Wall art for Evan's room
5. Finish setting up my new craft room and add an artist altar
6. Pot holders or trivets
7. Bag or purse
8. Halloween decoration
9. Christmas decoration (upcycled tree skirt into bunting)
10. One handmade item of clothing
11. One handmade accessory
12. Finish my peacock embroidery from last year and frame it
13. New bellydance costuming (halter top, pantaloons, and peacock fascinator)
14. Paper star garlands for the kids' rooms
15. New curtains for Molly's room
16. Mexican tiled console table

#13. New bellydance costuming

#9. Christmas decoration

#5. Finish setting up my new craft room and add an artist altar
#3. Wall art for Molly's room (Painting of squirrel tea party!)

30  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / Re: When to Post an Item Crafted for a Swap Elsewhere? on: January 17, 2013 09:14:48 AM
lol, no it didn't spoil the surprise! Even if it did, I was so stoked to be featured it would have been worth it. It was my Candyland barware set I made for a local board game recon swap. Smiley My partner was very surprised and we had a good laugh when I showed her the craftster post!
