21  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Discussion and Questions / Best Amigurumi Book? Newbie Help! on: June 02, 2009 03:14:02 PM
To all the Crocheting genius' out there!

I'm really new to crocheting (i.e. only ever held a pair of hooks, never physically done anything with them)

Anyway, I've had a looky at all the youtube tutorials but I still dont quite grasp the concept  Embarrassed I think I am just useless. But anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any tips and advice on the best books they've used.

Whether for a beginner or just in general.
For patterns or step-by-step guides.
Or just because you adore them.

Thankyou for any help ladies (and guys)
22  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Boldy Going Nowhere...Tshirt Recon Help! on: June 01, 2009 10:46:57 AM
To the many clothing/sewing genius' out there in Craftsters,

I have 7 XL mens tshirts that I am aiming to turn into tshirt dresses. However, I am basically completely useless with a sewing machine as I am completely new to it.
I am fine with ripping stitches out of things and doing mock-ups but when it comes to the real thing it comes out all scrappy with rubbish stitching.

This is one of my delightful humungeous tshirts

Anyway. Just a few vague questions, but any newbie info would be frickin AWESOME.

1. What is the best stitching for new seams? (I dont have a serger) Is it just a straight stitch or something to do with zig-zags and pinking the edges.

2. I want to put contrasting ribbing on the outside but I have no idea how to do it. Any help?

3. I'm trying to change the shape with the minimum of cutting into the original fabric, especially the neckline. Does anyone know any tutorials or sneaky little tricks to make this a reality?

Thank you for any help whatsoever, Anything is appreciated.
23  COOKING / Dessert / Birthday Cupcakes (pic fatty) on: May 12, 2009 03:19:21 AM
It was my friends birthday and I wanted to do something special as I hadnt seen her in ages, so I cracked open my trusty cupcake recipe book and bought myself some sugarpaste.

Bear in mind that this was my first attempt at using sugarpaste and BOY was it a struggle to begin with.
There was icing sugar everywhere to stop it sticking to my hands.
Food colouring splattered about the place as I had to mix my own as there was only royale white in the quantity i needed.

Though I thought it turned out okay and tres cute!
(She loved it by the way  Smiley )

My Mini Sugarpaste Missus

"I'm ready for my close up!"

And a Lolrus (It was an INTERWEBZ party)

And Finally a Lolcat! Though he looks a bit CRAZY!

Thanks for looking!
I hope I have this in the right section!
24  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Introduce Yourself / Boldy Going Crafting on: May 09, 2009 09:37:15 AM
Hello There fellow crafters!

I've finally joint Crafters after admiring it from afar and as I have a massively long time before I start Uni at the end of the year and thought to occupy my time with a hobby as I love doing just about anything creative (hence taking a year out to do a Foundation Art Diploma).

Anyway, I just made a puppet but I HAD to join after they announced the Poppet-a-long as I love them...especially the Spock Poppet (https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=249557.0)...seriously that is one of the main reasons I have been sharpening up on my hand sewing skills!

Finally learnt how to use a sewing machine after forever (they removed Textiles from my secondary school when I join and brought it back when I left  Cry ) and shall be making use of it when I finall turn my 7 Star Trek (The Original Series) XL Tshirts into dresses! As you can probably guess I am a major Trekker and love anything Sci Fi!
Star Trek (ARGH the new film is A MAZE ING!
Stargate (fricking love floppy haired James Spader (love Boston Legal too) in the original movie)
Star Wars
You name it I will probably be swooning over it.

And Zombies
Dont forget the Zombies
I love them too.

So, yes, anyway.
If anyone has any advice on Tshirt Recon or changing crew neck's into something slightly more feminine feel free to say something as I am terrified of doing something wrong!
Looking forward to hearing from anyone and Happy Crafting!
