1  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Deep in the Forest - an altered board book (6 large-ish pictures) on: November 16, 2009 06:21:49 PM
I made this altered board book for my partner for round 2 of the Random Swap.  I loved everything I made, but this was the hardest to send as it was my first completed altered book (so, please be gentle!).  I found out she loves woodland creatures and trees, and one of her requested items was an altered book.  I found a forest Discovery picture book at Goodwill for 99 cents, and even though I didn't use much of it because the pictures were too large, it was great inspiration.  I wish I had better pictures.  I was seriously down to the wire on sending on time, and had to rush more than I would have liked too.  I may ask my partner to take better ones and send them, but I wanted to post it because I'm quite proud of it.

The background and the mushroom on another page are all that I used from the forest book

The owls were inspired by an ATC by alwaysinmyroom.  I am definitely going to try out more fingerprint creatures!  The little text boxes are dictionary and thesaurus entries for various forest/owl words.

More from the forest book and dictionary/thesaurus entries, plus some paper bits from my stash.

Backgrounds taken from nearly every forest story in my thrifted books stash.  The little added bits are from a Russian picture dictionary.  Sorry it's so blurry, this photo is the worst of the bunch.

This is my favorite spread.  The words say "When autumn comes... the leaves change change from lush green to fiery red and gold."  The background is painted with acrylics and the trees are made from paint chips I've been having mr. bunnyface pick up whenever he goes to the hardware store.  The pages are more shimmery from silver and gold paint IRL.

And an spread made with 26 inchies and puffy fabric paint, along with some buttons from alwaysinmyroom to replenish my diminishing stash.

I hope you like it.  It's one of my favorite projects that I've done.  C&C or questions welcome and appreciated.  Thanks for looking!

3  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Altered Puzzle Swap Round 2 (Signups: CLOSED; Send: 11/9 & 12/15) on: October 21, 2009 12:55:27 PM

Swap name: Altered Puzzle Swap Round 2
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: bunnyface
Sign-up date range: October 21 - 31
Partners posted by: November 1
First sendout date (blank puzzle pieces): November 9
Second sendout date (decorated puzzle pieces): December 15

Krafty_Karasus finished puzzle after Round 1.  Pretty isnt it?

Limited to a certain number of people? (optional): 24

Restricted to people who all live in the same country? NO

Additional Age requirement? 16

Swap Organizer himself/herself meets these conditions:
- Has fully read the Swap Info Guide: YES
- Has successfully completed two swaps as a participant: YES
- Is not organizing more than three swaps right now: YES
- Will recruit a co-organizer or give all details to a Swap Moderator if this swap has more than 25 participants: YES
- Is at least 18 years old: YES

Swap Organizer will check each participant to make sure they meet these conditions:
- Has been a member for at least one month: YES
- Has posted at least 15 times: YES
- Has completed one swap successfully before signing up for multiple swaps at a time: YES
- Is not currently signed up for more than five swaps: YES
- Does not have any negative feedback: YES
- Participant has agreed that he/she is at least 16 years old: YES

Each participant will have their own puzzle to start with.  You will be in one or two groups of four or five people. You are going to send one blank piece to each of your partners, then your partners will decorate them and send them back.  You will also receive one puzzle piece from each of your partners.  You will decorate the puzzle pieces and send them back to their original owner.  If you and your partners agree, you can always swap more than one piece, but please remember that you will be swapping with multiple partners.

Obviously when you are decorating the puzzle piece you would not want to put anything that would get in the way of the other pieces. You can have a theme that your partners decorate the puzzle piece on, or you can make it artist choice.

I cannot guarantee that I will be able to make groups within one country (I will do my best if you specify that you would rather ship within your own country).  Since you should be able to ship in a letter envelope the postage for this swap should be fairly inexpensive, even though we mail twice, so please do not join this swap if you cannot ship internationally.

Since you will be sending your own puzzle pieces out, you will not need to have the same puzzle as everyone else, and it doesnt matter how many pieces you have. There will be more rounds and you/friends/family can decorate the other pieces.

Delivery Confirmation is not required for this swap, since it is easy to send in a regular letter envelope. But realize that if your puzzle piece does not make it to its destination, you will have to send another.

Helpful Hints Learned in Round 1 (Ususally the hard way):
-You can use a blank puzzle or a new/used puzzle.  Some really neat blank puzzles can be found here.
-Photos, photos, photos! Take photos, if you're able, before, during, and after. It keeps a good record (for you) of your work and if pieces do go missing, you have reference for the next pieces. Also, you can post if your partner is unable.
Before you send:
-Put your unaltered puzzle together and number the pieces before sending.  It will make putting your altered puzzle together much easier (unless youre up for the challenge!).
-Trace or photocopy your puzzle pieces so that you have a template to make a replacement, and label each template with the partner that the piece was sent to, just in case (or buy two of the same puzzle. Then you will have a replacement piece/pieces if one or more go missing).
-Designate which side of your piece is to be altered, and if orientation is important to you, mark it on your piece.
-Put your name/initials and theme, if applicable, on the back of your piece in case of mixups.
-If you are swapping two pieces with your partner, send two that fit together.  Then they can do two separate pieces or connect them for one big piece.
While you are altering:
-When you receive pieces from a partner, keep them in their original envelope, write the theme on the envelope and add your bits of decoration. Then everything is one place.

4  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Heavy Metal Playing Cards on: August 11, 2009 03:04:42 PM
This is my first completed project on the Paper Crafts board, I hope this is the right place to post this (since I used an actual deck of playing cards).  I was in the Summer is for Metal swap last month and made this deck of Heavy Metal Playing Cards for my partner.

Each card has a different metal band.  I tried to keep each suit within one genre of metal, but some genres had to be combined, and some cards were dictated by the person (Lemmy is the Ace of Spades and King Diamond is the King of Diamonds of course!  And all the queens are girl bands/bands with girl singers, cause girls can rock too!).  Hearts are all Glam Metal, Clubs are all Black Metal, Diamonds are kind of a mix of folk and power metal, and Spades are mostly just straight heavy metal.  I found pictures on the internet and sized them to fit on the cards, printed them on sticky label paper, cut them out, stuck them on, and sprayed them with a sealer.  I had to make a new box (which had a picture of Dio because he's too metal to fit into any genre/suit) because the deck was too fat to fit back in the original box.

Thanks for looking, C&C welcome and appreciated!
5  KNITTING / Projects from the Stitch 'N B**ch Books by Debbie Stoller / Knit Your Own Rockstar-King Diamond on: August 11, 2009 02:56:01 PM
I participated in the Summer is for Metal swap last month.  My partner loves stuffies, and as soon as I saw the Knit Your Own Rockstar in Stitch 'N Bitch Nation, I knew that I had to knit a King Diamond doll.  This is my first try at anything like this (I've pretty much done scarves, hats, and bags until now), and I kind of just modified and combined patterns as I went along, but I'm pretty happy with him.

I've never done duplicate stitch (for his face, it looked a lot better on the chart I drew out) or hair before.  I think if I did it again I would use a smaller size needle than recommended, because my gauge swatch matched, but you can really see the stuffing through the black parts.  So he's a little wonky, but I still loved him and my partner does too!  For the swap I also included a King Diamond Fun Facts book, and I made his leg bones microphone out of shrinky dinks (because he had to have it).

Thanks for looking, C&C welcome and appreciated!
6  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Poison Undies Set (image chubby) on: August 11, 2009 02:44:45 PM
This is my first post on the needlework board Smiley!  I'm still kind of a beginner, and haven't really been too excited to share any of my first few projects (mostly Sublime Stitching patterns on tea towels).  These are definitely my favorite embroidery project so far.  I made them for the Summer is for Metal swap.  My partner, Dorkariffic, collects quirky undies and also loves Poison, and I figured, who would be more at home on a girl's undies than Bret and the boys?  I also included her favorite line from a Poison song, my first time working with lettering and t-shirt stabilizer (yikes, not my favorite at all, but I'm happy with how they turned out.

So without further ado, here is the Poison undies set (based on the Look What The Cat Dragged In album cover):

Talk Dirty To Me

Bret Michaels

Bobby Dall

Rikki Rockett

I know that CC is missing, I way overestimated my embroidery speed and didn't want to send late (my first swap), so he'll join the band ASAP.  I also plan on doing a Poison logo and maybe one of their dirtier song lyrics so Dorkariffic can have a pair for each day of the week.

They are worked in stem, split, and back stitch, and the border is DMC neon or fluorescent effects.  It was a pain to work with, but I loved the color so much!

Thanks for looking, C&C welcome and appreciated!
7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Altered Puzzle Swap? (Need organizer) on: July 22, 2009 05:27:23 PM
Would anyone be interested in doing an altered puzzle pieces swap?  Here's the original post for the craft-along, started by the genius audio-astrophysics:  https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=313436.0

I'm not sure exactly how it would work, but each member would need a puzzle to alter, and the pieces would be sent out to be altered, then returned to the original owner so that each swapper ends up with their own complete altered puzzle to frame, gift, use for inspiration, whatever...

I can't organize, because I'm in package delivery limbo in my first swap and don't know when I'll be joining a second (maybe this one Wink) but I would definitely help with organizing in any way I could.

J is for Jellyfish, a piece from the alphabet themed puzzle I'm currently working on:

I hope audio-astrophysics doesn't mind that I'm totally stealing her project idea, but I love it!
8  COOKING / Dessert / Garden Party Cupcakes on: July 14, 2009 06:42:21 PM
This is my first post in this section.  I've been loving all the cupcakes people are posting, so I put Hello Cupcake on hold at the library.  There are so many amazing ideas, and since I have it for three weeks and since bf loves desserts I've just been making cupcakes.  I'll probably end up buying the book, it has some really great recipes for from scratch cupcakes (so far we've tried vanilla and almond, yummy), and I don't know how to come up with this kind of stuff on my own yet.  So, since we've just started harvesting some of our veggies from the garden, I made the Garden Party cupcakes!

I got two kinds of fruit chews to make the veggies, but somehow ended up with no orange ones!  So I did the carrots with frosting instead, and my piping isn't very pretty.  I also couldn't find the green licorice laces they used, so I just rolled up some green fruit chews, which didn't have quite the same effect.  I'm not a huge candy person, especially in combination with chocolate frosting, so I take off the decorations and give them to bf.  He's happy with his no special occasion cupcakes, and I'm pretty happy with my second attempt at fancy cupcakes.  I've also done the petit fours from the book for some neighbors who looked after our house while we were away, and they turned out super cute too (I actually liked them better)!  Unfortunately our camera battery was dead and I wanted to take them over while they were fresh, so no pictures Sad
9  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Paper for printing collage images on: May 28, 2009 04:22:08 PM
Hi!  This might be a stupid question, but I've looked around a little and can't find what I'm thinking of.  I am collaging the front of a journal, and I'm wondering if there is any paper I can use to print images from an inkjet printer that is thinner than regular printer paper.  I'm thinking somewhere between tracing paper (too thin) and regular printer paper.  I would like it to keep some texture, and also be able to see through a little bit to the background.  I hope this makes sense.  Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.
10  KNITTING / Knitalongs / Legwarmer Socks on: May 21, 2009 10:50:47 AM
Would anyone be interested in doing this project from Knitty: http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/PATTlegwarmersocks.html?

This would be my first knitalong, so I don't really know how this works, but it seems like a fun way to do a project!  I know it's not really the season for legwarmers, but I'm thinking of making them for Christmas for some ballet dancing cousins (they seem ballet practice appropriate right?  They were the first people I thought of when I saw this), and of course a pair for myself, and I should probably get started so I can see how I feel about them as a gift and have plenty of time to actually make 3 pair.

Any takers?
