1  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Dean Venture & Triana Orpheus (of the Venture Bros on Cartoon Network) on: November 03, 2009 08:12:27 AM
My husband made the mistake of mentioning to me that we should go as Dean Venture & Triana Orpheus for Halloween. Apparently, he wasn't serious...

For those that are unfamiliar with the Venture Bros cartoon and the characters, I included a picture of the two characters I found online.

I made Triana's tshirt from a kid's medium tshirt I picked up at Joann's. I used a freezer paper stencil and several coats of white paint to make the skull & crossbones for her shirt then trimmed the neck & sleeves.

I also made Dean's (a.k.a. my husband) "sweater" vest. I do not know how to knit or crochet so I made it with some flannel and bias binding I picked up at Joann's. I used one of his tshirts as a "pattern". I didn't take any in progress photos because I was not originally planning on entering the challenge.

The rest of the costumes used items we already had or borrowed from my dad. I picked up the tights & wig a couple weeks ago.

No one at the party we went to was familiar with the show so that was a letdown. Note to self for next year: dress as less obscure characters or become friends with more people that watch the show.
2  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Charity auction - how much for starting bid? on: September 11, 2009 09:51:55 AM
I am making a quilt for a silent auction on Tuesday for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am trying to figure out how much to list as the starting bid.

The quilt will be approximately 45x55 when finished and is a pretty basic design. Of course, I am at work and the quilt is at home so I have no photos of the actual quilt but below is a quilt I made from the same design. The one I am auctioning is blues and greens with white sashing and a fun blue & green diamond fabric for the accent squares.

Suggestions for starting price? I don't want to scare anyone off starting it too high but I would like to get at least $50-75 (or more!) for it. Most of the other items in the auction will be gift certificates to local businesses and the auction is being held at a local Italian resturant/pizza place.

Thanks for your suggestions!

3  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Wedding quilt for Piet and Kate on: August 13, 2009 12:50:15 PM
Last summer, my husband opened up his big mouth and committed me to making a quilt for his cousin Piet and bride Kate. He's lucky I love him (and quilting so much). This is actually the 4th wedding quilt I've made with this pattern (Star Log Cabin from the Quilt in a Day series) and I think it's my favorite. My husband tried to convince me we should keep it.

For some reason, all the wedding quilts I've made have been shades of blue & green. I looked at their registry online and everything they registered for was light blue, light green and chocolate brown. I was apprehensive about adding chocolate brown to the blues & greens I already had in my stash since it was such a sharp contrast. I found the fabric I used for the star at Joann's (wish I bought more, I love it!) and I think it helped ease the transition.

I didn't have enough of any of the fabrics for the back so I pieced it together and really like it. It's almost like having 2 quilts in 1. I always take some of the fabric from the quilt to my "emboidery lady" Geri and get their names & wedding date (shown in the top left corner).

This is the quilt I made last summer for Piet's sister Inga and her husband Soren. When they received it from us a couple days before the wedding, my husband opened up his big mouth and said to Piet & Kate "just let us know what colors you want and Jennifer will make you one too." Thanks hon!
As you can see, it is also green & blue. They got married in a park overlooking the Mississippi and their invitations included maple leaves so the main green fabric has maple leaves.
