27  COOKING / Dessert / Multi-Occasional April Cake :D on: April 14, 2012 06:38:02 AM
So every Easter our family celebrates the Holiday and the birthdays that come with it.  But this year was a little more special as 2 of the birthdays were BIG ones.  My MIL and GMIL were turning 60 and 80 respectively so I wanted to make the cake and I wanted it to represent them, the Holiday and this particular spring which has come weeks earlier than usual.

I started with a chocolate cake torted with super rich vegan (Shhh! Nobody noticed they were eating tofu) chocolate mousse from Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World.  Covered it in marshmallow fondant.  Then I Stacked and painted the cakes.  The sky was watered down food colouring and the grass was piping gel.  Then I made up a batch of modelling chocolate for the tree and then added gum paste flowers I had made ahead of time.  I piped on the names, numbers and Happy Birthday in melted chocolate.  Lastly I added the bunnies which represent the lovely mothers and their children.

I was really happy with the outcome.  I hadn't painted a cake in a while and it's one of my favourite techniques (when it works  Wink )

I showed my son and now he's asking me, "Is that for ME?!" and singing the Ghostbusters theme song.  He's 3.  He gives you a thumbs up and so do I Grin

30  COOKING / Dessert / Re: Sugar Skull Cake on: March 19, 2012 08:18:29 PM
Thanks for the sweet comments ladies Grin

First I made the cake with Wilton's 3D skull pan, I trimmed the 2 pieces until they fit together nicely then glued them together with espresso flavoured icing.
Then I covered it with white fondant, careful to keep the face as smooth as possible and pushed all the ugly folds towards the back.  I found that this cake is really hard to cover perfectly and that's what last minute flower bombing is for Wink
Then I went to town with royal icing, icing gel, fondant markers and silver dragees, I used black fondant for the eyes, eyebrows and cut out a mustache with my new mustache cookie cutter.  Then I cut out lots of flowers to hide the ugliness in the back.
It was really easy because the pan does most of the work for you.
