1  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK) and Art Abandonment / a few random doodle rocks on: August 08, 2018 04:27:56 PM

To be honest, a few of these were made awhile ago when I thought I would try my hand a painting mandala rocks. I know it's just dots but man is it hard! Kudos to all those who have the steady hand and patience to do it.

The rest were just fun doodle rocks. My fave is the black and white one on the left.

Also, some of them smeared when I sprayed them with glaze. Again, no patience. I am sure the paint was probably still wet. Doh. Undecided

I haven't hidden them yet. I plan to hide them a couple of local parks around my town. It will be so fun to see if people find them and post it.

Thanks for looking!
2  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Craftster Itself / How do you use Craftster? on: July 28, 2018 07:28:44 PM
So for years here on Craftster, every time I login I only really look at my bookmarked topics to read the new posts and occasionally will click on a thumbnail on the homepage to read a post. Once in awhile I will catch a thumbnail at the bottom of a post and I will visit that thread as well. I do not feel like I am being very efficient and not getting as much out of Craftster as I'd like. I know I am missing so much of what goes on around here and it drives me crazy. How do you all check the other boards and posts? Should I have my preferences set different so I am aware of new stuff? Do you just go to the Community tab and click each heading to catch the new posts?

Help! I wanna see all the stuff!
3  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Fancy solar lighting on: July 15, 2018 10:38:56 AM
My friend has been making up-cycled solar lights this summer for her home and cottage. She picks up candlesticks at Goodwill, spray paints them black, pops off the light part of an outdoor solar light, and glues it into the candle stick hole. She has these displayed all over her yard at the cottage. She even made a chandelier that hangs from a tree branch. So cute!

DETAILS OF SWAP:

Let's swap pocket letters!

Pocket Letters are where you take a 9 pocket trading card page and fill each pocket with an ATC (although they don't have to be (and usually aren't) as detailed as an ATC) and small goodies tucked in behind the ATCs (stickers, tea bags, a note, washi tape samples, pictures, ephemera, craft supplies, paper clips, beads) and in one pocket, include a letter.
If you don't know where to find 9 pocket pages they are sold where collectible card games are sold such as Walmat or your local game store.  Or Amazon (25 for $5)
http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Pro-Pocket-Page-Protectors/dp/B005HIOVOG

Each pocket can be a different theme or you can have one theme across all 9 pockets

This should be a low cost swap if you keep to all flat items and embellishments and should fit in an
A4 envelope (4 1/4" x 6 1/4") (you would have to fold it but that should not be an issue) or similar size.  I have heard that they should fit into a business sized envelope (4 1/8" x 9 1/2"). Just make sure that it is packaged well and the corners won't tear the envelope! Taping the edges of the envelope might be a good idea.

You can choose 1 or 2 partners.

Check into the swap thread every week!
And thank your partner when you receive!

QUESTIONNAIRE:
Name of swap:
Craftster username:
Email address:
Your real name and mailing address including the country (as it would appear on an envelope):
Would you be willing to ship to an address outside your own country?
Confirm that are at least 18 years old(YES/NO)

Do you want 1 or 2 partners?

What theme(s) would you like your partner to consider making for you?
List at least five but feel free to list more if needed.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

What are your favorite colors:
What colors do you dislike:
List themes you do NOT want to receive:
What (if anything) would you NOT want to receive as an extra/goodie in the pockets behind the ATCs?

Any allergens in your home (pets, smoke, pollen)?
Do you have any allergies?
Pinterest link (to give your partner an idea of what you like)

Anything else youd like to tell the organizer or partner NOT listed in the questionnaire?

6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Steampunk Airship ornament on: November 28, 2017 04:58:01 PM
I bought the pattern from LostWax and followed his Airship tutorial to make this super fun ornament for the Steampunk Christmas Ornament swap.

I decided to make everyone the same ornament so I had to cut out enough pieces for four ships. Pretty easy really. This (really cheap) craft foam is super soft and simple to cut. It also is soft enough to make divots to look like screw holes just by applying a little pressure with an ink pen nib.

Then I hot glued all the pieces together. The pattern creator gives lots of good tips in his video. Among them was the use of a silicone baking mat when hot gluing the body of the ship together. You can apply the hot glue, put the pieces together and immediately put the pieces down on the mat. This keeps the pieces together and helps hold their shape while they cool without sticking to the mat. It was so helpful!

Fun fact. Those two little tools that look like pens -one is black the other is white- are tools we use to get circular or punch biopsies from skin specimens. They are razor sharp and cut out circles perfectly! No worries, these were brand new and never used and any skin. As a matter of fact we don't even do this procedure in our lab but my boss is a hoarder and couldn't say no when they were offered to us from another lab. Great find for me though since a regular hole punch does not cut through the foam and cutting them out freehand was making me crazy!

Here I've applied dots of epoxy to look like rivets. It was probably the hardest part, mostly because I do not have any amount of patience to speak of, but it really adds to the fabricated metal look.

Painted it all black

My favorite part, adding the metallic wax paint. So fun! I chose three different metallics (all I could find locally): silver, rose gold and a brighter silver called silver spark. I really think brass would be cool. Maybe next time. Wink The paint is applied like antiquing or dry brushing; sparingly and in layers. I used my fingers to apply it since I felt like this gave me a little more control over it.

Finished!

Thanks for looking!
7  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / new year inspired pocket letter swap? on: November 28, 2017 07:49:01 AM
I thought it might be cool to swap New Year themed/inspired pocket letters. Maybe list some words/quotes that you can focus on for the year to come and your partner can create a PL inspired by those words.

Since I am thinking of this so late in the year it would have to be a relatively short signup and creating time if we want them before Jan 1. Or I guess it would be ok to do this in the first of the year give or take a week? I know this is a busy time so I totally get it.

I will organize.

whatcha think? ideas? comments?
