1  CROCHET / Projects from The Happy Hooker by Debbie Stoller / Help with Sweet Pea shawl? on: January 07, 2012 08:53:10 AM
Not being one for patiently and correctly learning a craft, I picked up the happy hooker book and started teaching myself the stitches needed for the sweet pea shawl. The first line has gone fine, and I have a chain with a set of shells on it. The instructions for the next line have blown my mind however.

From looking at the picture, it appears that you are supposed to single crochet into the top of each shell, chain 3, double crochet half way down the side of the shell, chain 3, double crochet into theside of thenext shell, chain 3, single crochet the top of the shell (which is what Im doing, and it looks relatively similar to the picture, which seems alright).

But in the instructions it keeps saying things like "skip next chain -2 space"; "sk next 2 ch - 1 spaces". Can anyone shed any light on what these instructions actually mean in case I ever end up trying to follow instructions without a picture?
2  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Engraving tool on: December 15, 2011 06:09:37 AM
I am hoping to put some kind of engraving tool on my xmas list to use for a silver bracelet engraving project I have in mind. Can anyone recommend a good one that is not too expensive?

When I was looking I found some very nice expensive ones that work on wood and stone as well, which would be nice but all the ones I found that seem to do this were thousands of pounds, which seems a bit excessive! Does anyone know of any cheaper ones capable of engraving stone? Also am I likely to find if I get one that does this it is a bit too big/strong for the delicate-ish metal stuff I really want to do with it?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer (also if there is a better place on the forums to post this please could you let me know)?

I like the first one better. The simpleness goes with the naturalness of the gemstones more I think.

Agree with the idea of glueing the ends on; it is rubbish when you make nice things and they break!

If you draw well, could you do a portrait of his German Shepherd?

Or if he doesnt already have one, a scarf in the colours of his soccer team?

Buicks to the moon is my all time number one most romantic country song.

Love this idea! There is always too much food to eat at Christmas for me to do a gingerbread house, but I am now considering borrowing your idea for a halloween project.

I love the idea of doing a gingerbread version of your  own house! I also think putting Flash inside is awesome, although do wonder whether anyone managed to bring themselves to eat him!

I made my sister one of these for Christmas (just with Mickey Mouse coins though). Wish you had posted this before I did it so I knew about your hammer and nail trick and hadn't spent so long trying to figure out how to get (a) the TINY drill bit to stick in my drill; and (b) the drill bit to not slip all over the penny! Your way sounds much better.

There's that bit in the third book where Jacob gives her a wooden carved wolf pendant. Maybe you could try that?
There are some twilight swaps if you do a forum search I think, which might give more ideas.
