1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Gauge problems w/UK knitting pattern on: September 06, 2009 11:20:16 AM
A few weeks ago, I volunteered to make a baby sweater for my friend's new grandbaby since she's just starting out with knitting and doesn't feel up to snuff. The pattern (which is a UK pattern) seems simple enough but I'm having a heck of a time getting the gauge right.

Here are my questions/issues:

  • On a UK pattern, what does the term "double knitting" mean? Is it just a yarn weight or something else?
  • The yarn my friend wants to use is baby weight and will NOT knit up to the proper gauge (22 sts/28rows for 4in) on the needles given by the pattern (4mm/US6). The only way to almost approach the gauge with the yarn I'm using is to use US9s which makes a very airy fabric.
  • Should I just go out and get new yarn? I know my friend really likes the yarn but I don't think I can use it for the pattern and am afraid that if I use the US9s, I'll make the sweater waaay too big and airy.

2  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Tiny needles + big feet = needing motivation on: June 06, 2008 09:01:03 PM

Here we see one totally finished, very neat anniversary sock that was given to my boy last year.

What's my problem? I still have another one to make for this anniversary and I have no motivation to complete it. I have so much more to do- I'm making it for a size 14 foot. That's 11 and some inches of foot!

Can anyone see a silver lining or am I doomed to knit this thing for the rest of my life?
3  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Half a pair o'socks on: July 02, 2007 07:50:14 PM
My boyfriend forgot our anniversary which means he only got half of his present. Behold the sock that took forever (size 1 needles for a men's size 14= so much work)

4  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Knitted Boutonniere on: April 27, 2007 07:38:53 PM
I made this for the BF earlier this month; a movie theater in town was having a prom-themed movie marathon so instead of forking over $18 for a real boutonniere, I figured I'd knit my own for free Smiley

I'm pretty pleased with how it all turned out although I never want to work with florist tape again!
5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / top-down raglan with puffed sleeves? on: April 14, 2007 08:09:06 PM
is this humanly possible? or am i just having lovely, lovely knitting pipe-dreams?

ideally, i'd like to use this pattern:

with these sleeves:
6  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / rant: yarn swifts are too expensive and i'm not cool enough to make my own on: April 14, 2007 06:49:49 PM

7  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / online yarn store on: April 09, 2007 03:08:04 PM
does anyone know the name of the online yarn store that sells in bulk/bags? i know this prolly doesn't help but i think the background for the site is orange. . .  . . anyhow, i remember them having good prices on bulk skeins and now i can't remember what it's called.
8  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / lamb hat on: March 31, 2007 10:27:23 PM
It is a lamb hat (although I think it looks a tad bunnyish). The boyfriend is obviously happy with it

Just a hat

Obligitory action shot (with no action)
9  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / dumb question- if a knitting needle and a crochet hook made babies. . . . on: March 31, 2007 10:20:02 PM
This has probably been answered but there were few pictures of what I'm talking about so I'm confused. I recently inherited my g-ma's knitting supplies and I now have a rather odd needle/hook thing. It looks like your standard issue needle until you see the tip- there's a crochet hook on there! What is this? what do I do with it?
