1  Re: Fiber Friday August 26th 2011 in Spinning: Completed Projects by Sprocketfox on: August 26, 2011 06:40:50 PM
I made my first corespun yarn!! go me!!

Its hand washed raw Border Leicester locks hand dyed with food coloring wrapped around a boucle core.

I brushed out the cut side of the lock but left the curly tip to add texture. You can see the pics of the freshly dyed locks on fiber friday July 15th

And Now The Yarn!!

I dub thee,

pardon the cruddy phone pics cant find the cord for the camera

And a close up:

I could only fit 34 yrds on my bobbin but I still have ALOT of locks left so I'll be making Mer-Locks for at least another month.

I started into the world of dyeing my own fiber!

I started off with some lemon-lime koolaid and some raspberry ice. They came out very pale but I like them. The singles were very bright and colorful but the plyed yarn was muted and subtle. I tried Najavo plying for the first time on these singles and I am fairly proud of the evenness(even though its a little over spun.

I didn't get very much spun in the past two weeks. I had a huge renfaire over memorial day weekend and promptly got a sinus infection when I got home so I stayed pretty lazy. But what I did get done I am freakishly proud of because its my first colored yarn. The roving is "mystery wool" dyed by Neauveau Fiber Arts. If you haven't checked her out yet I highly suggest it. Good prices, awesome video tutorials and very fast shipping.

I call the finished product "Summer Storm"

6  Fiber Friday may 20th, 2011 in Spinning: Completed Projects by Sprocketfox on: May 20, 2011 04:06:23 PM
Its Friday its Friday!! My first ever fiber Friday. Ive been a lurker for over three years and I just finally stumbled upon a work buddy who just happened to have an ashford traditional that needed a place to stay for awhile and that happened to be my apartment. The following are my first attempts at yarn and plying on a real wheel instead of my drop spindle.

This is my first project is a mix of corridale and romney it was a total pain to draft because the fiber was so old and so tossled around it was almost felted all the way through. The resulting fiber is gorgeous but scratchy as hell variegated silver. It will probably make a handsome felted bag some day I managed to get 137 yrds in total!

My next test was 8oz. of Black Welsh Mt. The seller claimed it was natural black but as I started to spin it I realized all the VM was this hazy grey color so I was pretty sure it probably started blackish but they did a dye wash to even it out. This stuff was a pain to spin evenly I had to switch hand positions over and over just trying to get all the funny lumps to go away but the resulting look was uneven in an artistic way after plying. (sorry my camera sucks and its truely way darker than the photo.)

My favorite of the week!!! My spinning buddy have me about a softball size of this yummy crimpy cream romney roving and it spun up like a freakin DREAM. But it looked kinda boring on its own so I plied it with some of the Black Welsh Mt. and got me some zebra yarn!!! I can't WAIT to figure out what to do with it!!!
