1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Ugly Tweed Capris to Less Ugly Tweed skirt on: April 23, 2009 03:57:38 PM
I had these capris, from Old Navy, for seriously 3 years, never having worn them, for the day I felt bold enough to do something AWESOME. It didn't help that their lining sounded like wind pants.

Anyways, something AWESOME never struck, but the eve of my parent's anniversary party did, and I'm broke as a joke. So, I busted out the ugly pants, sliced, diced, stitched, and whipped together this:

Exhibit A: (Pardon the half cut up look, I was i a rush, and not willing to put on unflattering trousers.)

And the finished product (pardon the photo quality, if there's interest I'll take more, these are ripped from videos of the day)

And just because I would care to show him off,

The Mister, who was willing to run out and buy me a skirt if it meant I stopped yelling at the sewing machine at 3AM.

It's my first wearable alteration in about 3 years (talk about a slump), so I'm pretty pleased.
2  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Beads: Discussion and Questions / CAVEAT EMPTOR on: April 23, 2009 03:22:43 PM
Let the bead buyer beware.

I was enthralled with Mykonos beads at first, but upon ordering a small batch (of which some were wrong, and some were shorted), and calling to ask about fixing it, my opinion changed tenfold.

Having the owner YELL at ME, the customer, (including reprimanding me about how customers always complain about not getting enough stock, but never about getting too much... Really, I just want what I paid for. How about you give me that, not too much OR not enough?), yell at her employees in the background, and then demand to call me back later.

Needless to say, my bead issues were NOT resolved. I would seriously say watch out, because when things are good there, it's nice to have a semi reliable supplier of all my beads (getting constant partial orders, also not so awesome, but something I'm willing to look past) but being berated for their errors isn't something anyone needs.

Anyone else have similar luck? UGHHHHHH I just want my beads
3  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Smoothie Deliciousness on: March 15, 2009 10:05:25 PM
So I've been trying to find ways to wean down the frozen jumbo (each bag is larger than a gallon sized ziploc) bags of strawberries, raspberries, mango-raspberry-blueberry mix, and about 36 cans of pineapple juice my fiancee and I have acquired. Since we do occasionally like to use our freezer for non fruit related items.

Enter, the best smoothie I've ever made. Nevermind that it's the only one I've ever made, it's way better than anything I've gotten at Frulatti, and I am pretty much in love with that place (the week or so a year I'm in the same state as one).

I made a giant one, about 16 ounces I'd guess (it filled a giant mug bowl perfectly) with the following (estimated):

4 oz pineapple juice
4 oz by volume frozen raspberries (I just grabbed a fistful, tossed 'em in a measuring cup, it came out to around there)
4 big frozen strawberries
4 heaving tablespoonfuls of vanilla yogurt. Like, stick the spoon all the way in, and don't even let it drip. About 7 oz I'd guess
7 ice cubes

And I blended it for about a minute and a half.
It's almost as thick as a warm sorbet, and has roughly a full serving of yogurt, at least a full serving of fruit, and as it's been melting, tastes even better texture wise.

My only complaint is the raspberry seeds.

ETA: also fantastic with some Sailor Jerry Rum.
