1  Yeti Village in CHALLENGE 117 ENTRIES by leighi123 on: January 07, 2017 06:59:56 AM
This year I decided to make a "Yeti Village".    Yetis is kinda my theme lately because I have been sewing so many fabric ones!

EVERYTHING is edible except for the string, 1 toothpick and the plate it sits on.     Its also totally vegan and tastes good if you cook it for a shorter time so the cookies are softer.

My Yeti Village  has mountains with yetis on the ledges, a ski lodge, a couple of tiny houses, trees and best of all a cable car!   I chose blues and greens and white for the majority of my coloring.     Yetis are made from a powder sugar and cornstarch "clay" and then hand painted with paint I made with food coloring and cornstarch.

I had a lot of fun making this, it ended up as a cute centerpiece for the table.

Thanks for looking!

Inspired by my sewn yetis

2  Re: Ongoing Wish Swap Round 107, 108, & 109 Gallery & Discussion in The Swap Gallery by leighi123 on: November 15, 2014 06:38:07 PM
I got a bunch of tiny polished rocks from rscowtown.   Levi mixed them in with some bigger rocks and marbles he had already, and made a spot for his hermit crab to play in.

The little rocks are going to end up in a smaller bowl when I can find one, for a meditation type thing that Levi saw at a Native American festival.   Levi is a "sensory seeker" kinda kid so enjoys sensory type experiences - playing with tiny rocks is relaxing, and fun!

handmade "breakfast" soap
hand embroidery pattern and fabric
Some flash cards for Levi
And a big piece of soft brown fabric

Its all stuff that will get a lot of use!  Thanks!

4  Tiny Tooth Fairy Note in CHALLENGE 99 ENTRIES by leighi123 on: June 07, 2014 09:49:34 PM
My almost 7yr old lost his first tooth!  So for my tiny thing I made a teeny tiny tooth fairy note.   Its just made from regular paper and tiny "tooth fairy handwriting".   The envelope I decorated with red and blue like the old air mail envelopes used to be (at least from what I remember).   I put a little glitter in there as well!     He loved getting the tiny note and was so careful opening it to read.

In case you can't read it, it says " Dear Levi,  Congratulations on loosing your first tooth!  Remember to brush at least twice a day.  Love, The Tooth Fairy"

I also made the pillowcase with pocket to put them in.

I got my package from phnxreign99.

I got a wall clock, which is in nice bright colors, perfect for my sewing room (it seems to work fine so far!)
A really cute zipper bag with a little strawberry on it - very useful too
And an assortment of fun kit fabric, which I'm sure I will find a use for

7  A waldorf treehouse (made from gingerbread!) in CHALLENGE 94 ENTRIES by leighi123 on: January 02, 2014 01:58:00 AM

I made a gingerbread house based on waldorf tree houses/gnome houses.  Its made from 4 batches of gingerbread, using a few different recipes to give different colors and sturdiness.  The details are made from melted sugar, edible clay (made from scratch of course) and food coloring.  The only non-edible bits are the base (which is a shelf I got out of the closet wrapped in wrapping paper!), some toothpicks and a bit of string.  Everything else is all food!

I have a tree house with 12 gnomes, a play house, checkerboard, swing, picnic table, bench, book, 2 tables, 4 chairs, fire pit, garden, well/pulley system, ladders, a staircase, sugar greenhouse, a slide and sea saw, and a dock with a fisherman and lake.

I painted the gingerbread with cocoa and food coloring to make different shades to make it look more like wood.  The posts were also painted with a layer of watered down gingerbread dough and re-baked to give a bark like texture.

I tried to get pictures from all sides:

This little green gnome is sitting a toadstool table.

Two gnomes sitting at another table on another floor.

A gnome manning the pulley system for the well, and a bright red ladder.

This is the well made from gingerbread and painted.  The rock is holding the string for the bucket/pulley system.  Green archway in the background is one of two.

The pulley system holds this bucket, with a tiny gnome inside!

On the top level, there is the swing off one side.   There is a picnic table with a chessboard and grey gnome, a little playhouse, and another gnome reading a book.

Gnome on a swing

Gnome on a yellow bench.

The little yellow gnome is fishing on the dock.  The fish is hand painted, and there are two more in buckets (the orange/green one made by my 6yr old).  The water is poured sugar over tin foil.   Behind is the path, hand painted with cocoa.

Here is the greenhouse that I made from poured sugar.   There is also a carrot patch and a basket of carrots.   In the background is the staircase and playground.

Here is the fire pit.  Its got "ash" in the bottom, rocks surrounding it (for safety of course), and logs and flame.  The teal gnome is roasting a marshmallow.

Another shot of the firepit, staircase, path and carrot patch.

Here is a 360* video (mute it please!  There is no sound other than my sister watching house hunters!)

I even made a smaller, completely allergy friendly house for my 6yr old Levi to decorate:

I worked on this for over a week, it was a lot of work but lots of fun to do!  Hope you like it!!!

(and just for fun, here is the giant gingerbread house at the Grand Floridian, by Disney)

Thanks for looking!!!

8  A House for Hermit Crab in Halloween Costumes by leighi123 on: November 09, 2013 07:37:39 PM
This year, Levi was debating between a "llama" and a "decorator crab".  I talked him into the crab idea!

I used "A House for Hermit Crab" by Eric Carle as inspiration.  This is a type of hermit crab that decorates its shell with various things for camouflage.

It consists of:
- a full body suit/jumpsuit with a front zipper and elastic hood.  Eyes on stalks attached were hand sewn and googly eyes attached to the ends.
- gloves with cardboard inside to give them a claw shape
- Pull on body sleeve that has a dimensional chest piece, and attached legs with wire inside to give them shape.
- Shell, made from a giant long stuffed tube of fabric swirled into shape.  It goes on like a back pack, and has a waist tie that slips under the body sleeve.   On this is a bunch of decorations including seaweed, gems, starfish (which Levi helped make), a snail, sea annenomes.

Here is a video of a 360 view, its pretty hard to photograph to see everything!

At the zoo:

Here is is laying down (he was being silly waiting for the zoo train):

And this is just the jumpsuit:

He LOVED his costume and got lots of compliments!   Happy Halloween everyone!    Grin

Levi's package from Brian:

He has been using all of this stuff!   The shark is a pencil case, with a zippy mouth.  Levi put his colored pencils in it to take with him to do his schoolwork on the go.   The little round zip pouch he keeps a lego guy in that he likes to carry around.  And the notebook he has been using as a sketch pad, and also wrote down some dinner ideas he had.

Thanks Brian!

We are still trying to find out what happened to Brian's package from Levi, I've been remaking everything because the post office was no help when I contacted them.  Mailing new stuff tomorrow.

Look what I got!

Wrapped up:

Fun erasers for Levi:

These are yoga socks, they fit perfectly, I'm wearing them now!   They are also great for sewing, which I usually do barefoot but its been cold.

Please excuse my weird looking arm:   Rainbow bracelet with "Levi" on it.  I love the fun mix of different beads.  Its comfy too!

Magnets:  The cups I used to keep track of water intake (I have to have 100 oz a day, with the glasses I use, thats 8, so I just flip these upside down as I drink to make sure I get the right amount -very useful), and dishwasher magnet, so we know when to load and unload:

Such a great package!
