81  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Bed Book Pocket on: August 27, 2013 02:58:57 PM
My little girl loves reading. Often after she has been put to bed, we we'll find her staying up to read. Because of this she often has books spread across her room. To give her a place to keep her books I made a strip of felt that tucks under her mattress on one end and has a little pocket hanging down under her pillows.

Here it is empty.

And here it is holding her diary and six books.

I got the idea from the blog B. Jane brewing.
82  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Friendship Flower Mini Art Quilt on: August 11, 2013 08:52:04 AM

Craftster is such an amazing place. It's a place where we can show others our hard work, and get inspired by the work of others. But when I though about what Craftster meant to me, it wasn't so much about all the wonderful projects here, but about the community. I love how supportive and friendly everyone on Craftster is. Although I've never met most of the members, and I probably never will, I still feel I can call many of them my friend.

Where else can you come to find others who truly appreciate the hard work that went into your efforts, because they've been there too? If you're feeling insecure about a project all it takes are the wonderful comments of the members here, to realize that your efforts really were worth while.

When I ran across this quote I knew it was the perfect quote for an art quilt about Craftster. The people here really do make me happy, and not only do they make my soul blossom, they also help my creativity to blossom.
83  COOKING / Dessert / Colorful Naked Birthday Cake on: August 06, 2013 09:48:08 AM
My little girl was having her 7th birthday, and really wanted to fun cake. I knew I wasn't going to have a lot of time, because weren't going to be home much right before her birthday.

So I found a fun cake on pinterest that wasn't frosted all the way and let the sides of the cake show through.  It was really quick to make, and turned out great. (She was so excited and helped to put on the flowers.) I just used boxed white cake and added a bit of almond extract to the batter (it really makes the cake taste great). Then I portioned the batter out into bowls and added Wilton food coloring gel to it.  The frosting is a marshmallow butter cream with half vanilla and half almond extract for flavoring. Probably my all time favorite icing ever.

And here are pictures of some of the slices.
84  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Crate Shelf for Towels on: August 06, 2013 09:40:52 AM
We just moved to a new place and I needed some way to store towels in our kid's/ guest bathroom. I had seen a tutorial for a crate shelf at Morning by Morning Productions and knew that it would be perfect.

I had originally planned on staining it like she had in the tutorial, but decided to paint it red instead. I love how it turned out.
85  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Farm Animal Shower Curtain on: August 06, 2013 09:35:14 AM
We just moved into a new place and have more bathrooms than we used to. So for our kid's bathroom, I decided I wanted to make their shower curtain, rather than buy it.  I thought it would be cute to use bandannas (plus then all the edges would already be hemmed) and so went to the store.

While there I found these farm animal bandannas and thought they would be perfect. So I grabbed some as well as some blue and took them home.

After washing and ironing, I measured the bandannas to double check their size and realized the farm animals were an inch larger than the blue ones. I also realized that to get the right width, some of the bandannas would have to be cut in half (or it would be a lot wider than needed and would gather more than I wanted).

Since I would no longer have my already done hems, I decided to just use my overlocker to sew all of the seams. When putting together they layout, I decided it would look weird to have a smaller piece on just one half, and so cut the bandannas into fourths and put a smaller piece on each side.

For some reason, when I was putting it all together, my brain stopped working and I forgot to alternate the colors on the top row (I didn't realize this until I started sewing it together and it was too late). Oh, well I think it still looks good.

Clothing Challenge 5 - Little Black Dress

Congratulations to rebecnik for her winning entry: Little Black Halter Dress!

The Little Black Dress: "A simple, elegant black dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion" (Wikipedia). Considered a staple to any wardrobe we could all use one, but why buy one when we can make one?

Rules and Suggestions:
  • Your entry should not have been posted on Craftster previously (ie not something you made and posted years ago!)
  • If using a pattern or tutorial, please let us know.
  • You can begin crafting at any time but remember to post your thread in this board from July 1st through July 8th. Voting will be open July 9th through July 16th.
  • Use your own interpretation of the theme. If you want to make a black dress for your three year old that's still a little black dress. If you have black dress that you want to reconstruct, go ahead.

88  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl (pic heavy) on: May 30, 2013 06:23:28 PM

Meet Barbra Gordon. She's a librarian by day.

Her hair was done using the method that lanikins used for her Leslie poppet. It's rather messy, but gives wonderful results.

And what does she carry around in her bag? Why books of course.

But Barbara isn't just a librarian. She's also Batgirl.

Close up of her mask. I made it based on a simple fleece hat, and just added slits through which I stuck the bat ears. (The entire outfit is made from butter suede and felt, so I left raw edges as it wouldn't unravel.)

A view from behind showing off her cape.

Her gloves. (I spent a lot of time figuring these guys out.)

And her boots.

She was made for batgirl, and is now hanging out with her.
89  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Mini Book Key Chain on: May 28, 2013 01:28:44 PM

I recently tried my hand at book binding and made this mini book key chain. I followed a tutorial from this Russian blog using Google translate.

I then used the tutorial to make two small books for a poppet.

It was easy and fun. I like the result so much I'm going to be making a few more for friends and family.
90  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Birds Nest Necklaces on: May 18, 2013 01:45:28 PM
These are some Birds Nest Necklaces that I made for Mother's Day Gifts. There are tutorials all over the place for making them, and they really weren't hard to make. My favorites were the one with robin egg blue pearls (which I kept for myself) and the one with gold pearls.

All of them:
