11  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Advent Boxes on: December 04, 2009 09:41:22 AM

I saw a tutorial online for "countdown calendars" on this website: http://www.wherecreativityhappens.com/ and immediately fell in love with the idea.  I dragged my DH with me to Michael's (because then I could use two 40% off coupons, duh) and they were completely out of the party favor tins they had to make the calendar.  So instead I bought these:

Deciding I would paint them solid colors and then paint the numbers on them, I liked the idea of plain white boxes.  So I did this:

So, obviously, once or twice during the painting process I wanted to kick myself in the face for not thinking about it sooner and just BUYING THE WHITE FAVOR BOXES.  But, cest la vie.  You live, you learn, you get your dining table covered in white paint.

So after painting all those bad boys, I filled them up with gobs of candy (hope my man gets used to Hershey's kisses this month!) and tied them up with alternating red and green (with silver) ribbon.  A picture of them already getting picked at:

12  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Half Pipe Hat on: April 27, 2009 12:02:50 PM
I finished this hat for my husband Jesse on a Friday night and the next day it was 75 degrees and he, like a champ, tried to pretend like he was going to wear it all day, but didn't even leave the house with it on.  It is wool afterall.

I followed the "Half Pipe Hat" pattern from the Son of Stitch N Bitch book, and I used Patons Classic Wool (instead of what the pattern called for), in a really pretty green color.  And because Jesse has a big noggin I used one needle size up.

ISN'T HE CUTE

13  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Robins Egg Blue Hat (but not blue) on: April 20, 2009 12:18:19 PM
This was my first "real" project after dragging my husband to Michael's about twice a week to keep buying yarn for washrags.  There's only so many rags you can knit before you want to make something you aren't just going to be wiping up dust or (more likely) cat vomit with.

Alas, here is the pattern I used:  http://racheliufer.blogspot.com/2007/10/robins-egg-blue-hat.html

And here is a very excited picture of me, sporting my new creation.

This was a really great pattern for a beginner, and a great project to get to start using those DPNs!
14  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Super Mario World Themed Checkerboard Table on: January 27, 2009 09:26:00 AM
This is a side table that was given to me a couple years ago.  It was light colored wood with little flowers painted in the corner.  Not very pretty, but the perfect height for my couch.  Then the coffee table busted, and this became the replacement.  I decided to do my long awaited idea of turning it into a checkerboard, and since I'm a Super Mario World nut, I made it a themed one.

It was painted with acrylic paint.  It has yet to be sealed, because it's too cold to go out and get sprayed.  At first I decided to do the squares freehand which was a HORRIBLE DECISION and I eventually taped them out.  And I'm kind of a moron so I didn't take a before picture.
