1  Changing colours - what am I doing wrong? in Knitting: Discussion and Questions by jadey_mcshadey on: October 02, 2005 01:56:49 AM
Bearing in mind that I am a complete beginner and even so haven't picked up needles in years, I decided to make a striped scarf yesterday, but I'm doing something wrong and I'm not sure what.

When I change the colours, the first stitch of the last row of the previous colour is coming up into the first row of the new colour. I'm changing the yarn at the other side, though.

I'm not sure if any of that made sense. Here's a photo:

Also, I'm using a 60% cotton, 40% acrylic. Do I need to block it?

I received a great package from Coreisten today, a gorgeous, soft hot pink and lime green stripey scarf and a pink and white cell cozie with a rad sushi button. THANKS!!

I'm going to wear the scarf tonight and people will be so jealous.

My computer is sadly very dead, so I won't be able to upload any photos for a while, if you took any before you sent, could you please post them? I did, however, take pics of what I sent, so here they are:

Kristen asked for a brown tote bag, but I couldn't decide if the large or small bag was better, so I just sent them both:

Except that I took the second photo before I added the button to the flap.

One of these days, I'll learn to take pics of stuff before I send it away!

I made a shirt last night! Apologies for the poor picture, it's night time here, so I had to use the flash.

Try to tear your eyes away from my hip flab (god, I have hip flab. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?)

I made this form, because I like filling in forms:

Pattern used: McCalls 4455 (view E)

Changes made: Just a few. I have a size 16 bust (damn those pattern sizes!) and a 12 waist, so that required some negotiation, plus I had to make the back peices a bit smaller.

Would you make it differently if you did it again? YES! So, patterns are made with a B Cup in mind, right? So when you make the size that fits your bust size (I wear a 34DD), it expects you to have a much larger underbust size (38B, I think?). Anyway, I took the back peices in a bit, but not the side front, so the arm holes gape in an unattractive way. It's also REALLY low cut, but you can't tell at all in the pic.

Next time, I'll make the centre front peices wider and higher and take an inch or so off the side front piece, which should fix the straps (they're a bit long). I'll also make it an inch or so longer.

I actually bought fabric today to make another one for an interview I have on Monday, but I'll see how my alterations turn out.

I do like the pattern, though, quite a lot.

what else? Um, it's fully lined, which I wouldn't ordinarily bother with, but I used a cot sheet to make it and it was really sheer, but I really like it lined, so I'll keep doing it.

Hmmm... it's not exactly kitchen, but I don't have a dining room, so...

I screened some napkins with my print gocco. The photo is a bit crap, it's actually BRIGHT hot pink and green.

I don't actually have a dining table, though, so I don't know what I'm going to do with them.

I know swapping isn't a competition, but SUCK IT UP, LOSERS because I won this round.

Worthwhilegirl kicked butt at this swap. Here's what she made me:

Rushmore Yankees tote, with embroidered Max.

Rushmore and Life Aquatic soundtracks with Criterion collection lookalike covers (The Faces' Ooh La La is one of my all-time favourite songs and I love all of the Seu Jorge Bowie covers)

Punctuality and attendance badges!! Can you see how awesome these are? I don't think you can. Suffice to say, they went straight onto my blazer lapel, so that everyone can see how awesome they are. I've an interview coming up and I'm going to wear them. Woo!

And this incredible Max doll. Seriously, you don't know how awesome this is. The blazer even has lapels! I'm completely in awe of Leah's knitting skills. WOW!

Thanks Leah, as far as I'm concerned, YOU saved latin.

Edit: ok, that will teach me to check the thread before I post. Well, it's all so insanely awesome that you can enjoy it twice.

6  Note books, journals and sketch books I've made. Very image heavy. in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by jadey_mcshadey on: September 06, 2005 01:17:04 AM
I've been on a book making binge of late.

Some of these should probably go in the recon board, because I used vintage little golden books, playing cards and a 70s medical textbook for some of the covers. They are mostly A5 and A6 size and all have 50 pages of either blank or ruled paper.

I'd love to know what you think.

There are more here if you're interested:

I haven't bought my scooter yet (next month!!) but this is a little book I made for my friend who convinced me to buy one by taking me out on hers for the day:

I hope this is ok to post here.

Thanks to danger.kitty for the stencil <3

8  Re: I WILL HONOR CHRISTMAS IN MY HEART, AND KEEP IT ALL THE YEAR" CRAFTALONG UNSWAP in Craftalongs by jadey_mcshadey on: September 06, 2005 12:43:19 AM
I joined a little late, so I'm trying to catch up with everyone. Here is:

A little scarf for my baby cousin. She'll be stoked by the jarring combination of yellow and hot pink.

Blank wire bound journals / notebooks. The Pooh one is for my 4 year old cousin to draw in, the two of clubs is for my dad to write his poker scores in.

Octopus (quadropus?) book thong. My first attempt at beading. I'm pretty happy with it. I can't take credit for thinking of it, I once saw a pic of a beaded octopus brooch. The thong bit is supposed to be his ink. This is for January's mother or maybe mine.

I'm feeling better about Christmas already. Now, a bag for my 15 year old cousin...

9  My first yarn and a question about carding alpaca in Spinning: Discussion and Questions by jadey_mcshadey on: August 29, 2005 07:02:24 PM
The other night I got out my merino tops and my drop spindle and made my first yarn!!

It's about 19 metres (just over 21 yards) of stripey fuscia and natural (black sheep coloured), three of pink and five of black. I think I over spun it a little, but I'm pretty happy with it for my first.

Is there anything that can be made with so little yarn? I don't actually knit or crochet, but would it be worth giving it to someone who does?

Also, a friend with alpacas has offered me some of their shearings. Does anyone clean and card their own roving? Is it worth the hassle? I like making things from scratch, so I wouldn't mind giving it a go, but any information would be appreciated.
