21  Re: Ongoing Wish Swap Round 72 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by myloveasdeep on: August 07, 2011 08:03:16 AM
I got my package from A2K!

She sent me a really sweet teacher's bag with a semicolon painted on it-I can guarantee no one else has this! =) She also sent three pairs of candy-colored aluminum knitting needles, a really well-made semicolon pencil case, red pens and some markers for my classroom! Thanks so much, you went above and beyond and I am truly grateful!

I am swatching for one with a huge roll of macrame yarn I found at the thrift and a big blue anonymous hook (no size on it). I'm on round four of a ten round doily and it's 14" across. I think I might need to add more rounds to get it big enough, but here's what it looks like:

I received from Atsuko! She made me a beautiful necklace from a book and a semicolon pendant!

The book necklace gives me such a thrill-I love the few words that make it into each circle. They give the impression that they could tell any story, so it becomes the best story in the world. I'm sure the actual book didn't hold a candle to the mystery of this necklace! A few of the words I saw: light, candle, medical book. Oh yes. Totally my English teacher first day of school necklace.

The semicolon pendant: ah, the semicolon, most graceful and layered of punctuation! It just quietly steps into a sentence and lets everyone know you're an absolute frickin' genius when you use it correctly. No biggie. I'm just the best at grammar. It's cool.

Thank you so much atsuko, you have definitely done a professional and appreciated job!

25  Sunburst Mirror for under $20! in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by myloveasdeep on: July 13, 2011 01:35:33 PM
I am normally a yarn and fabric crafter, but I recently got a 50's velvet tufted sofa from Craigslist, and I wanted a sunburst mirror to complement it. Of course, the eternal lament, those guys are expensive! So, I used this tutorial: http://www.instructables.com/id/Starburst-Mirror/

Materials I used:

bunch of bamboo sticks from Dollar Tree $1
some bamboo shish kebab skewers (I already had these, but they are cheap)
A can of chrome spray paint from Joann's $5.99
Assorted mirrors from Joann's, $5 total
Glue gun and hot glue sticks I already had (and I imagine you do, too)

Now for the prettiness!

With armchair for scale:

It took me less than one hour of work time, with a trip to the library while the paint dried. I am so happy with it!

26  Fumbling Polytheist's Shrine in Interior Decorating: Completed Projects by myloveasdeep on: March 24, 2011 03:11:25 PM
If you have seen much of the True Blood series, you've probably noticed the big shrine Lafayette has over his fireplace. It's very difficult to find a screen shot of. I'm entranced by the colors and by the significance of his very literally catholic choice of shrine items-the Virgin, voodoo dolls, sacred hearts and leopard print. He has a wonderful line in the second season: "Jesus and I agree to see other people, but that doesn't mean we don't talk from time to time."

My husband and I both grew up in very traditional Christian homes, and we went through the rebellion/agnostic phase like most people do. Now we're trying to patch together a spiritual life that just responds to whatever gods/ideas/colors/words give us that stab of joy that lets us know there's more to life than the body.

This shrine just got started today, and it's right above our bed. We collected things that represent all the sacred bits we love.

The whole thing, surrounded by lights from our wedding and some paper lanterns from the thrift store. The squid are from a poster set of nature prints. I think my primary god might be a squid. That's a weird sentence, huh.

Jackalope, Carl Sagan, and a big egg (from Hobby Lobby)

Ganesh, the Virgin, and you can see part of the iron horseshoe (this is a bit from Terry Pratchett)

A Virgin shrine I made from a plastic tray and photos I took in Santa Fe, and a Hermit tarot card.

The Star tarot card and some fake grapes to represent Dionysus. The candles are being held in a tree-shaped metal candle sconce. The tree of life has deep meaning for both of us.

We are still going to add something to do with Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrisson, as well as a picture of Odin, Thor's hammer, and something for burlesque. Oh, and sea monsters.

I'm done with the afghan! My husband made two squares and I made two, sewed it, and did the bobble border.

ShiloDisease received from me, so I'm posting a picture I took. I'd love to see it on her, though, I bet it's adorable! =)

I received from Eerka! A stenciled shirt that says "Now is the springtime of my discontent" and a pair of earrings that combine some of my favorite things: circles and red/sky blue together! Thank you, your work is beautiful and I appreciate the care you took to make something lovely for me!
