2  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Re: My first RL collage (img heavish) on: November 30, 2008 01:12:58 PM
Thank you thank you everyone! I'm going to set up tonight. Yikes! I thought before I go I'll post a couple more of the "RL" collages. I took all your wonderful advice... I tried fabric, buttons, dried flowers (man those were hard to stick).

I also did a digital one with two characters knitting. I finished two sweaters this month, so I've had knitting on the brain. Grin

Also, here is the postcard for the show, if anyone is in the neighborhood. I will be bringing some snacks to the reception, though cooking isn't exactly my strong suit. But if you know what Pocky is, I'm going to try my hand at making some homemade ones! Wink

Thank you again to everyone for all your kind comments and advice. I'll try to get some photos of the reception and post those! Grin

This is amazing and beautiful. I love that it's on a tree as well. It would be a wonderful use of reclaimed materials.

I just saw this was a featured project. Yay! Thank you so much. I feel so much more confident now, like, times infinity plus one.

I am going to post some more of my real life collages soon, with fabric and buttons. I just need to scan them in which means cleaning my scanner (charcoal isnt friendly to scanner glass).

Thank you again EVERYBODY for all of your kind words and incredibly useful suggestions. I have been using them all. Ive even started carrying my camera around more.

Im so excited about this art show; Ill keep you all posted! Smiley

Horray for Madison! I heard the State Street Obama party was bigger than Freakfest. Wink And thank you for the local store tips... I was going to try and get over to Frugal Muse this weekend; we don't own a car so I always have to wait until the weekend to go craft shopping.

The show will be at Mother Fool's on Willy St. for all of December! I'll post when the reception... thing is, it would be so great to meet someone from craftster!

Thank you again everyone for the wonderful advice. I'm going to try using fabric tonight. Off I go! Grin

Thank you everyone for all your advice. I've started looking everywhere for fun texture. I'm going to try creating some more this week and we'll see... I haven't had a chance to go to the fabric store yet, but at least I can play with my paper and maybe some of the fabric I have horded away.

I can't imagine illustrating a children's book. That sounds like so much fun. Maybe once the art show is over... yikes! Smiley

Thank you sooo much for all the comments and kind words! They really do make me feel more like I can do this.

I would love to try fabric. I was considering even sewing on the paper, which might be... different. It was my first RL collage, and I'm pretty excited about all the possibilities. Then again, I dont want to go out and spend $100s in supplies then I cant afford. LOL. Ill definitely check craigs list if not decorative paper, maybe bed sheets or old clothes?!  Grin

My first RL collage

So heres the story a few months ago I had to create some concepts for a local ethnic/music fest. Im a designer for a bank, but we were supporting this thing, so it was a fun little project. I sketched something quick, scanned it in, then decided to play with textures and see what happened. This is what I came up with:

Anyhoo, of course they went with another concept (the life of a designer), but I liked the idea of digital collage so much that I really wanted to use it some more. I love texture and pattern so I started collecting cool textures while I was browsing; wood grain, fabric, butterfly wings, apples. Mmm, texture. Then about a month ago it got pretty slow at work, so to keep my mind going I started sketching little characters on the backs of my business cards. Im more of a designer than an artist, but sometimes I like to sketch. Then one weekend I thought I would scan some in and try doing that digital collage thing, and this is what I came up with

Now my husband thought they were all that (I dont know), and hes doing a marketing degree (horray for putting your husband through college). He thought it would be a fun project to try marketing this stuff, he set up an online shop and a deviantart account which was all good, until this weekend I was notified that I would be having a solo art show at a local coffee shop. Now I thought he was just going to do his little marketing stuff online. Im excited, I think, but Im also panicking because I dont have nearly enough (I need, like 20 pieces). Plus they want me to do some originals, and I have never done a collage before in my life. So on Sunday we went to the craft store and bought origami and scrapbooking paper, some decoupage glue, and some mat board, and I tried to recreate the digital collages in RL.

Anyway, that is my hugely long story. I guess I'm looking for advice... I'm afraid I'm just going to be laughed at by the "art" community... Madison has a pretty big art community. Im sort of freaked out right now, and I really dont know if what Im doing is good enough to have an art show, but I dont want to bow out because it could maybe be successful, and if not it should at least be fun. So right now Im hoping for ideas on how to create original collages I think Id like to do some bigger stuff, but I dont know where to find big pretty paper the wrapping paper was all sort of kitschy and shiny, and there wasnt a great selection of the big paper. I dont know. Ack.

Hehe, thank you for the compliments! Believe it or not, Pookie actually loves to wear clothes. I think hes just a natural show-off. Grin
10  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / The Cat Turtleneck Sweater on: October 26, 2008 03:51:23 PM
An autumn sweater for Pookie, knit in the round.

I happened to be knitting this on the bus a few days ago, and for the first time in my life someone had to sit down next to me and ask what I was knitting. I tried to laugh it off and act like I really wasn't a crazy cat lady, but I don't think he bought it. Cheesy
