Dearest Headmistress, I've forgotten if we include a class with our SPEW work or if it separate...please make corrections as needed.

Yes, SPEW can be combined with Class work, provided it fits a prompt.  You get 10 Bonus House Points for each Class or Challenge project that is for charity, so each Class+SPEW project is worth 25 Points.

Also, if you wish to craft items for charity that don't fit a Class/Challenge prompt, you can hand that in as JUST counting for SPEW, and receive 10 House Points per project there.
4132  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Spooky Spool on: June 26, 2014 11:32:35 AM
I was lucky enough to be partnered with jillybeans in the recent Altered Spool Swap.  One of her themes was "Spooky", and while it wasn't what I initially planned on going with, the spool seemed to take me in that direction on it's own.  Cheesy

It was stained black with wood stain markers, highlighted with silver Sharpie, covered in striped scrapbook paper and a beautiful jeweled spider that I received from pinkleo.  The back has a lucky/unlucky 13.  I added a metal clock face and a stone skull bead wearing a crown on top, and a tassel of crazy yarn, ric-rac, embroidery floss and ribbon hanging from the bottom.  In the tassel I hid a skeleton key and several heart shaped black Hamsa beads.

The pictures are courtesy of jillybeans.   Kiss

Challenge: Quidditch - Choose Your Champion - Japan
House: Gryffindor
Project Name: Sushi Charm Bracelet

Project Link: Sushi Charm Bracelet
Brief Description: I love Japanese food.  I mean, I really love Japanese food.  Everything I've ever tried.  I've been fortunate enough to have several friends from Japan who have taught me to cook various foods from home.  If you want to get me to do something for you, you should try bribing me with sushi. Wink  In honor of my love of all things from the Japanese culinary world, I created a new bracelet full of sushi!  It contains 9 silver charms, including plates of sushi, chopsticks with a piece of sushi, big fish, little fish, and a bottle of sake.  And my favorite part, the 6 lampworked glass sushi pieces.  Cheesy

Note from the Headmistress....

This is a note for new members, and a REMINDER for alumni.  On Sunday a new Bertie Bott's Bean will be posted.  These challenges are designed specifically to be short, unlike the class prompts, in order to provide fresh inspiration throughout the semester.  Each bean lasts just two weeks, so it should not be a surprise when a new one is posted.  Last semester new Beans were not posted as often due to significant life changes for me, and the absence of co-Headmistress pinkleo, but they are back on track now.  I DO accept the post of the previous bean until midnight on the Sunday in which the new bean is posted, but not after that.  Please plan your crafting and posting accordingly.

And trust me on using the Minute Tapioca.  It gives you a clear filling, and doesn't taste like gritty, raw flour.  Much prettier and tastier.  Wink

Challenge: Bertie Bott's Bean - Pink Grapefruit
House: Gryffindor
Project Name: Re-built Herb Garden

Brief Description: Many of you will remember that last semester I built a little herb garden on my patio.  Sadly, about a week ago our landlords had our building power washed.  With bleach.  And didn't warn us ahead of time.  The bleach killed all of my plants, destroyed the rug on the floor and even ruined the shirt I happened to be wearing that day as I left the house. Sad  So I've had to toss all my herbs and replant everything.  Thankfully the new plants seem to be doing well and are already growing.

Project Name: Dutch Apple Pie

Original Recipe Link: Dutch Apple Pie
Brief Description: Sadly, I never knew my paternal grandmother, and my maternal grandmother was not exactly a crafty woman.  Most of what I learned about crafting, sewing and the DIY spirit came from my mom.  Mom is a Jill-of-Many-Crafts, but not serious about any one of them.  What she is quite good at though, is *improvising*.  Mom had me help her cook and bake when I was a kid and I picked up her habit of substituting ingredients and altering recipes to suit whatever was on hand.  In her spirit I baked a Dutch Apple Pie in honor of my sister in law, niece and nephew visiting yesterday.  This recipe shows my revisions, including mom's trick of using Minute Tapioca instead of flour or cornstarch in a pie filling, and almond flour for a slight nuttiness.
Project Picture:

1 (9 inch) pie shell
5-6 cups apples - peeled, cored and sliced
2 tablespoons Minute Tapioca
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
2 tablespoons butter
cup all-purpose flour
cup almond meal
teaspoon ground cinnamon
packed brown sugar
cup rolled oats
cup butter

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Fit pastry shell into pie pan and place in freezer.

2. To Make Apple Filling: Place apples in a large bowl. In a separate bowl combine 2 tablespoons Minute Tapioca, white sugar, teaspoon cinnamon, teaspoon allspice, and teaspoon ginger. Mix well, then add to apples. Toss until apples are evenly coated.

3. Remove pie shell from freezer. Place apple mixture in pie shell and dot with 2 tablespoons butter or margarine. Lay a sheet of aluminum foil lightly on top of filling, but do not seal.

4. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes.

5. While filling is baking, make Streusel Topping: In a medium bowl combine cup flour, cup almond meal, teaspoon cinnamon, brown sugar, and oats. Mix thoroughly, then cut in 1/2 cup butter or margarine until mixture is crumbly. Remove pie from oven and sprinkle streusel on top.

6. Reduce heat to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Bake an additional 30 to 40 minutes, until streusel is browned and apples are tender. Cover loosely with aluminum foil to prevent excess browning.

I just sent petskin a long list of questions to help me narrow my ideas down! I'm so amped to get started Smiley.

I started a Google Document, and shared it with Abbeeroad, so that we can both come up with a mega list of questions together.  Cheesy
