11  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: Awesome gift baskets? on: November 19, 2008 01:04:21 PM

For the past few years I've made gift baskets for most of my Christmas presents. I made record bowls to use as the actual baskets.

Some of the stuff I've included in the baskets:
-hollowed out books
-surprise balls (from not martha)
-perler bead ornaments of video game thing (the ? boxes, mario, yoshi, link, etc)
-tiny record bowl ash trays
-handmade jewelry (simple earrings and the like)
-little paper-mache boxes that I decoupaged with tissue paper and pictures
-marble ornaments
-baked goods- usually chocolate chip cookies and sugar cookies

I also included a bunch of non-handmade stuff- little containers of playdough and bubbles that I picked up at the dollar store, Christmas pens and pencils, mini-coloring books, crayons, little pieces of chocolate etc. I'd say that each gift basket had maybe one or two handmade things and then a few more store bought items- every one was different. And as a filler I saved a few weeks worth of Sunday comic pages and shredded them up. They've always been a HUGE hit.

As a college student, I like gifts that can be done pretty inexpensively in large quantities.

This year, I'm making a lot of button magnets- $15 for 3 bags of buttons, $3 for a glue gun, and then the cost of the magnets. I think I have enough buttons for about 400 magnets, at this rate, and they're really easy- stack the buttons on top of each other or make bigger pendant-y designs, hot glue together, glue to magnet. It's easy, quick, and a ton of fun- I've been making them nonstop.

I'm also making a lot of thumbtacks (http://belladia.typepad.com/bella_dia/2005/11/easy_stocking_s.html), from Bella Dia's blog...they're really easy and fun, and super inexpensive.

I also love making ornaments- clear ones with paint swirled inside, gumdrop ornaments (painted styrofoam balls, cut in half in gumdrop shapes, covered in glitter), any kind.
