8285  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: The random SPINNY babble thread :-) on: July 23, 2009 07:01:20 AM
that makes sense, faren.  I used extra dye and let it go for an entire hour last night, and it seemed to make a more through out color.  I think maybe my roving was just to close to itself, packed to tightly.  Because I was doing it in mason jars on the stove.  I packed as much as I could in there the first go LOL  So I'm tinking by the time the liquid got to the insides of the bunch, it wasn't as concentrated, and gave the variation in colors.  It makes a really neat effect,  but it's not what I was wanting.  this go I got a really deep lovely purple. next attempt will be a lavender. Smiley

I'm using Ashford acid dyes.  I get broken color.  Like blues and purples.   Maybe I'm not using enough dye?  or maybe my roving is to tight against itself?  or I just suck at dyeing LOL.  Or maybe ther eis another more technical reason for my tourbles.....

on the subject of looms, I've decided I'm making myself a back strap rigid heedle loom.   Might be one of the more basic looms, but I think its a good place to start:)
Onto the subject of dyeing, how do you all come up with a solid color?  I have tried and tried to get 100% color, and I always end up with different shades, even left with some white.  It's driving me nuts!!  Seems like no matter how long I do the pre-soak,  or how much dye I use, I can never get the 100% color I want.  I just want solid purple!!!!! no blues, no white, just purple!!!!!
