7491  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: CALL FOR ARTISTS -handspun yarn to be included in an art show run by Pluckyf on: January 20, 2010 04:05:26 PM
so I came up with a plan.  My yarn is going to be a very simple 2 ply spun on my drop spindle. The fiber will be randomly chosen by my husband since it's all in the basement and I can't get to it.  I saw the fiber on the ravelery group, and it's all spanky!  So I'm going to do something very simple.  Anywho that's just my plan Smiley  Still hope to get it done so I can get it in on time Smiley

Those flowers make those pouches super super cute.  Your method seems a heck of a lot easier then those other fabric flowers whose name I cannot remember....  they look a bit different, but they are wonderful just the same!

d'oh, 1 week late!  This idea is brilliant and I wish I would have seen this earlier... My son just ended up with plain iced cupcakes for his birthday...  You and your BF did an excelent job on making that aligator!  That is one lucky cousin!

Speaking of short staple lengths, is anyone else allergic to merino? I thought I would mention that if your allergies are pretty severe, you might stick to a longer staple or take some kind of antihistamine first.   It seems like it's so short and has such little bits that are in it, my skin goes nuts. I haven't found that with anything else. I know someone is allergic to alpaca, Belladune maybe?

Yus It's me alergic to alpaca...  elociNNicole is alergic too, but I think she mainly felts?... This is probably one of those things people interested in spining should know, some time you are alergic to fabulous fibers, and then you get sad when you can't work with them.  But then it gives you an excuse to spin silk or something else just as delicious.  Just don't start with fancy fibers, as Jane Doe has mentioned.  so easy to let those fibers slip and break the yarn...

Wow, it's so surprising to hear that everyone has been using top whorl spindles!
*starts hunting Australian etsy's to find one*
What are you using to make a lace weight spindle?
I've seen some tiny hand-turned wooden ones that would fit inside a teacup! cute!

I think I'll try using my sons tinker toys to make a spindle, they are quite light.  My mother, thinking since it wasn't on my xmas wish list, passed up a laceweight spindle because she thought I wouldn't be ready for laceweight yet.....Silly Mom Smiley. But goodness, all this talk of spinning on a spindle (and I've only done 2 yarns on a spindle, the rest on my wheel)  makes me wish she hadn't.  Not that I can't make one, but it'd be nice to have the equipment ready for all this Smiley  can't wait to bust out the tinker toys tomorrow and see if it works!

I'm thinking I'll break out the spindle and join in, I still consider myself a newb, even though I have a wheel and have created alot of yarn.  I think I just might try and make myself a spindle good for lace weight, as I only have an Ashford student spindle... might even make it bottom whorl for fun Smiley
